I'm definitely biased on this matter as someone who has been an otaku and reading manga daily for a decent chunk of my life now but I do agree wholeheartedly with the anon, western media not only sucks but there's barely any variety on top of that, be it Cartoons, Hollywood or even indie films, I won't say that all western media sucks nowadays but most of it does.
For example, let's take smiling friends for example, has there been any other cartoon in the last few years that genuinely captured most people to the point of becoming recognizable for even people who didn't watch it ? I don't think so tbh, and can't think of any example, then you add factors like politics, few shows being produced, most of it being for adults, or being too childish etc etc and it's easy to see why the industry can't keep up with the demand and so people are forced to seek other avenues, in this case anime for those who like animation, manga for those who like comics and even web novels/light novels for those who like books/novels.
We tend to say "quality over quantity" but it's better to have one and sometimes the two rather than none, in this sense Japan has lots in quantity and some jewels that most would consider "quality" (I don't agree with this sort of assessments but well), keeping it to animation as it's sort of the focus of this thread, we get a bunch of shows every single season (spring, summer, autumn and winter) and a decent amount of variety despite the obvious focus on certain genres (Isekai and rom-coms currently I would say).
Personally, I would prefer if western media became good again so all these tourists would go back, but being realistic it's probably not happening anytime soon, Japan already breached into the entertainment market globally and it's here to stay.
