What's the deal with the umbrella?

Also I'm putting my bet on something very minor in committee like flag color or name for a street being the spark that blows this whole commune internal structure up.

The protesters for the last 2 weeks carried umbrellas, to block pepper spray, bounce tear gas canisters off, and block police floodlights at night from blinding them. If you watched the Seattle footage before the CHAZ was set up, every night they had a kind of phalanx of umbrella holders a few rows deep facing the police line.



It's a tactic borrowed from the Hong Kong protesters, in fact a lot of what's been happening in the USA has been copied from them. (Read the archive of that article if you don't want to give Bloomberg a click, it's actually pretty good.) The umbrella specifically was so heavily used for years, that the 2014 movement got called "The Umbrella Movement".

As far as iconography goes, it's not the most LARP-y thing they've done. But unless you were watching those streams at those times, it looks pretty dumb as an eternal symbol.
