Artcow Chris Hart

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I sort of assumed that his books were "ghost drawn".
Kind of? He does apparently hire other artists for his books with roughly the same quality art he produces, but they get minimal credit for it. He really does do some of the illustrations though.

Is this guy really a lolcow? Plenty of manga worse than his gets published, and he doesn't microwave poop.

(Those are my criteria I guess)
He might not microwave shit but when he made a deviantART account he basically expected asspats and kisses for his art. Instead he got well done constructive criticism and pointers by more talented "amateur" artists and threw tantrums over it (even calling some if not most or all of them trolls) before blocking them and dismissing their advice.

I read that blog and I really think they blew it out of proportion.

Do I agree with him? No.

Yet he draws at an industrial level. He shits out art. Drawing women with defined abs probably won't sell. That's something he probably acknowledges and the feminists probably fail to see.
It has been said before, but it's worth repeating: Drawing all kinds of female characters probably will sell, it's just a little bit daft that Hart and his ilk assume that art that conforms to their particular ideals is all that will ever sell. I'm not saying that just as a feminist - I think cynically limiting art to what you think is "marketable" at the time is stupid and just leads to artistic stagnation.

That said, I don't think Hart is some kind of a monster or anything, he's just one more cash-grabber giving bad advice. As bad as his advice is, I'm optimistic and hope most people who buy his books will get the hint eventually that there's more in the world of art than what Hart puts in his guides.

I actually did some research on the supposed "Professional Manga Artists" he got to do his books art. Turns out that they're either American artists or Japanese animators/character designers.

Any way I can see this for myself?

Also, as a d/ic/khead, I am obligated to tell you about our lord and savior Glenn Vilppu.

I just did a search on Anime News Network for some of the artists that were mentioned in the "Art contributed by" sections in the books. Plus a fair bit have clearly American sounding last names anyways.

And who the hell is Glenn Vilppu?

Forgot my link. :stupid:

Glenn Vilppu is an art instructor who /ic/ worships alongside Andrew Loomis. Highly recommended. http://www.vilppustore.com/

FYI, you can get Loomis's books hassle free because nobody holds any publishing rights to them. Happy drawing.

Wait, is that a good thing? Or a bad thing? Cause I have a few of Loomis's books on my external hard drive.
I can't remember the exact details, but the copyright status of Loomis' books is a bit murky (I think they fall in the grey area of copyright law where, in theory, they're out of copyright due to lack of registration renewals during the era where those renewals were still necessary, but in practice, some bloody jackass asserts copyrights these days and they have the money and you don't so there.)
Some of the books continue to be available in the Internet Archive. Also, here's a bunch of other freely available old books.

Isn't Chris Hart related to the BC newspaper comic strip Harts?

OH my god. I have been thinking for quite a while about making a thread about him so thanks for doing it for me.

I have seen a lot of his work that is exceptionally awful and I have to say that I'm really glad I never used how to draw books growing up. I was so close to doing it too, I've held his book in my hand and put it down. I'm also /really/ glad I never indulged in my very brief stint of learning copy-paste anime styled art and instead worked on developing my own style to use for my webcomic(s). I also did everything I could to get away from exactly what Chris Hart does and worked on more realistic fantasy art doing everything I could to learn proper anatomy while treating whatever critiques may come with respect and consideration. I've been invited into Wizards of The Coast and will hopefully be doing an internship this summer but my fate is still undecided.

Chris Hart has been a driving inspiration on what I don't want to do or be. I swear to god when I did my first webcomic series (that I cancelled, it was a fan comic, which I don't do anymore thank god) the fans were the most obnoxious, whiny, demanding people I've ever met on the internet. I stopped making it and they threatened to come to my house and kill/rape me unless I continue. In the time (years) I was getting harassed about making more and I just wanted to blow up at them, good or bad fans, I said to myself ,"No. Don't be Chris Hart."

I am a much happier person because of that motto.

Actually, I was referring to the worship of those two on /ic/.

I would say "Pray for them". But after realizing that many of them would want to buy this book. I'd say that people (or rather, Hart and the Weebs who buy this) are just plain stupid.

In short: be angry, then laugh at them.

Which fandom was that?

I think anime/manga can be an art form, and people can develop their own unique styles within. That being said, and as I said earlier, I don't like using "how to" books at present. For now, if I draw animu/mango style, I just do it for fun and I pretty much keep it to myself. I don't think I could go pro in the manga industry. I think that most weeaboos who think they can make it big in the industry with a copypasta style are either going to drop those ambitions later, or be in for a rude reality check.

Also, I too have developed my own unique style (even if it's somewhat influenced by another style). I think it's important to have a unique style of one's own, and I like how, for example, Western newspaper comic artists have a wide diversity of styles.

I want to say that not even weebs deserve to get scammed like this but they are most likely the same people who think anime is an excuse not to study realism. Surprise motherfucker, you need to!

It's one thing to say how to create manga (as in, panel layouts and types and such). It's another to say how to get published. Really, every page ought to just say "Be able to draw really well. Be able to write really well. Be able to create excellent original stories even, perhaps especially, if you are only interested in making fan-manga of existing properties." At any rate this seems to indicate Hart is aware his fanbase is full of retards and he can make a buck off of them with anything (I also imagine he's really smug and rude to them but I have no proof of that). Too bad for him he's unaware that he's one of them, just older and mildly successful. Sure his books must sell seeing as how he's been in the business for years, but it's not like he's a household name, and he probably wanted to make money in animation or comic books anyways.

WHOA.

Chris Hart is a lolcow? Childhood ruined.

I used to check out his books from the library all the time, I'm pretty sure he's set me back by at least a few years.

Anyone checked out fnochrishart?
