Let's Sperg Chrono Trigger - Hey Goku, let's go time travelling!

Thanks to my lovely viewers for the kind birthday wishes. And what better way to celebrate the day after my birthday then to go and kill an evil version of me?

Bringing the reforged Masamune to Ginyu causes him to finally pull his head out of his ass, and also triggers us a flashback!

The flashback is a little tough to capture in a series of images, so I hope you're seated comfortably for this retelling: A long time ago, Ginyu wasn't a frog-man! Shock and gasp, I know. But before all this, he was the squire to a knight called Cyrus. Cyrus, put simply, was a badass. The two set out on a journey to reclaim the Hero's Badge from the Frog King, and then set out to find the Masamune (it should be noted, during the double boss fight with Masa and Mune, they mention no one's made it to the second phase since Cyrus). But this was not to be some classic knight's tale of questing and adventuring...

qRfe51b.png

While Cyrus does manage to claim the Masamune (or Grandleon, take your pick), Magus and his general Ozzie confront the pair on the mountain and manage to break the weapon. Cyrus bravely charges to give Glenn time to escape, but Glenn doesn't take the opportunity and simply watches Magus give Cyrus a lightning-charged pimp slap that kills him. Cyrus gives Glenn a mission to watch over Queen Leene, and then his body bursts into flames and burns to ash.

FUCKING. METAL.

Ozzie calls Glenn a scared frog with no pond to jump into, and Magus takes the suggestion, cursing Glenn with his transformation into the frog-man we see today. That day was 10 years ago, and now Ginyu wonders if he has the strength to take up the blade of his former friend.

What's the answer?

4nirap9.png

A resounding yes.

Arrange your party the way it was when you went to the Cathedral-with Goku, Bulma, and Ginyu. Ginyu has healing techs and by the way, you should drag his ass to the End of Time and teach him his own Water Magic. Magus is a Barrier Change boss who can only really be damaged by magic most of the time, so having at least three elements covered is great. Mosco could do Shadow, sure, but his Magic stat sucks, so this is the best chance we have.

First, however, we need to go to the Magic Cave and open it, so that Frog will actually equip the goddamn Masamune, which is one of his better weapons for some time (and can evolve to be even better in the end game). Another flashback plays at the cave, showing Glenn and Cyrus as kids-as it turns out, Glenn was always a better swordsman, but wracked with fear of real battle and unable to bring himself to harm another. But now?

Goddamn, if only that sword did that in game. Well, with the Hero's Badge, it does have a gigantic crit rate, so that's something.

The magic cave is easily traversed. There are bats and rats to fight, the rats are weak to magic but take maybe 20 damage from your hardest hitting fighters. It's a gigantic "hey shithead, go give Ginyu magic" sign.

EdxDD05.png

The Fiendlord's Keep looks like we're about to lay siege to Castlevania. I would not mind that crossover...

In the beginning area, there are two ways to go. Heading left allows you to get a few free consumables while only having to contend with creepy NPCs. By the way, there's a bat following us. We can't do anything about it, yes it is a boss later. Heading to the right also has you meet some creepy kid NPCs surrounding a chest, and the next corridor up has illusions of people important to the current party (Goku sees his mom, Ginyu sees Queen Leene, Nadia sees her father, Bulma sees her dad too, and Mosco sees Bulma, weirdly enough).

Returning to the main corridor after exploring both areas has a save point appear out of nowhere. Well, no harm in using it-

iYUkonk.png

Actually, it causes Ozzie to appear and taunt us. He tells us we have to go through him to get to Magus, and we have to go through Slash and Flea to get to him...and get through all the monsters he summons to get to THEM. What a cunt...

By the way, the Keep's music kicks on now, and stays playing even in battle. I do not know exactly which track it is, because searching for "The Fiendlord's Keep" brings up a different track to the few notes that are playing on a constant loop (I advise turning down your volume until the music switches to better tracks).

Heading back to the right, the creepy kids around the treasure chest are ghosts. Beating them (which can be done with one Wind Slash attack) gets us a Barrier Sphere. The next corridor where the "important NPCs" are has them turn into Sorcerers and summon a bunch of minions. Sorcerers can heal their party and deal an AoE damage attack to the party, making them priority one.

m6FbwQO.png

The boss of the right is Flea, a magician type enemy. I stupidly forgot to heal before this fight, however, "Flea" doesn't talk. I used the time to heal up, and when the "Flea" attacked Goku with a fire based attack, doing all of 12 damage, Goku countered and killed him in one hit. Even Ginyu picks up on how easy that was...oh hey, there's that bat-

YPxDo8H.png

The real Flea is gender confused, as Ginyu calls them a woman but Flea calls itself a male. That said, he/she passes about a million times better then most of the trannies we cover on this board so, more power to 'em. As Flea puts it, "Power is beauty and I'm deliciously strong!"

The actual fight is pretty easy-don't use magic, instead use X-Strike with Goku and Ginyu, and have Bulma heal or get some extra DPS in as needed. S/He counters magic with "The Stare", an attack that makes whoever gets hit with it gay for them for two seconds and then the affected character attacks the entire party. Occasionally, Flea just uses "The Stare" regardless when they feel lonely. Troon magic, I guess...S/He also drops tons of status affecting magic on the party, so use Panaceas as needed.

Flea leaves behind a Magic Capsule on death. Yay!

The left side has some Gaolers, upgraded versions of the Omnicrones we fought in the dungeon-the one with the Dragon Tank, remember? And also some skeleton enemies that die when even Bulma shoots them, so the left, on a whole, is much less dangerous then Flea's Path. After a battle with 5 skeletons in the throne room, a boss appears!

nUqkZ6e.png

This is Slash. His fight has two parts, one before he grabs the sword on the wall and one after. He has a lot of physical attacks, and the fight is relatively straightforward, just don't let anyone fall below double digits. He does a small little "fire" wave at the end of the first phase that hits everyone for about 30, so as long as you're not retarded you'll make it there. The second phase is more of the first, just more HP, faster movement, and harder hits. Keep it up, and eventually, he'll go down and leave behind his sword, the Slasher. It's a nice sword for Chrono, better then the Mammoth Tusk and gives a sweet +2 Speed boost.

A save point-a real, usable one-also flashes into existence. Use it. The save point in the beginning area also reappears, but it's a teleporter. We can use it to reach Ozzie. Yay! But we still have some travelling to do first.

xxTvWCK.png

We start with a corridor full of enemy encounters, at the end of which Ozzie waits. That chest has a Mist Robe, a sweet armor upgrade for Bulma. Ozzie calls for the other generals, but Ginyu gives the line above. It's a knightly way of saying "They're dead, we killed them".

The next area has conveyor belts with guillotines on them. The trick is to run through when the blade is rising. Along the way, there's a Dark Mail to get, it has the same defense as the Ruby Vests we have but it gives a +5 boost to Magic Defense, making it ideal for the Magus fight (and well, possibly ideal for until we get better!). Ozzie runs the crank to the guillotines, getting to him gets them to stop as he flees like a coward, AGAIN. A chest where Ozzie was has a Death Claw, a decent weapon for Mosco. Ponder why they have Robot parts lying around 600 AD AGAIN.

tfnBft1.png

This enemy is a Juggler, and the fake Flea used it as a model. A dead soldier at the end of the Magic Cave had a note saying that they switch their defenses when you hit them-whatever you hit them with, they raise their guard against it and become weak to the other kind of attack. Vary your attacks to kill them.

B21lnhw.png

This area has a ton of invisible holes that become very visible when we run over them and fall below. If you do, well, I recommend doing it at least once so you can fight the skeletons and fake save points below for tons of EXP, and get some nice items too, like an extra Barrier Sphere and a Lapis that acts as a Mid Potion for the entire party (200 healing to all). Again, get to the end, and Ozzie runs off.

wzH84Cz.png

After fighting through two boring corridors of monster fights, we finally fight Ozzie. He says his ice barrier is unbreakable but the boss fight is super easy-there's an enemy labeled "???". Hit it. It's a switch that opens a hole. Hit all four, and the one beneath him will open up and drop him down. Why does he even have that lever?

Two save points appear after the fight. The one on the right is legitimate, the one on the left teleports us deep below. Race past the vampire bats and head down the stairs, then enter Magus's summoning room...

Time to fight Magus, and save the world!

viUDw64.png

Start the fight off with Ginyu making a regular attack. It'll cut Magus's magic defense, and also force his barrier to shift. His barrier changes are announced via the text and come with him using the level 2 version of that spell. Lightning, Fire, and Ice will hit the whole party but Shadow Bomb will only hit one person. Use the same magic he uses to deal heavy damage. When he "risks casting a spell", it means his barriers are down but he's also about to drop his ultimate attack, Dark Matter, on the party. This also drops his normally astronomical Physical Defense to the point where even regular attacks hurt him. Keep as healed as possible, because you have 6,666 HP to get through. If Ginyu doesn't have the Tech Points to have learned the Heal spell, which is a party wide heal, go and grind until he does.

If you do lose to him, you get a sort of variant game over, where this happens:

However, if you win, Magus falls to his knees, and then Lavos starts to cause strange time distortions. Magus proclaims that he musn't awaken yet, but Bulma is confused, thinking Magus created Lavos.

cfv4LtZ.png

Magus goes on to explain that he has slept for centuries, feeding on the life of the planet and growing stronger. Everyone gets thrown through a super Gate, and Goku has a dream of him apparently enjoying married life with Nadia, before the whole party awakens in 65 Million BC, in Ayla's hut.

After we rest up, Kino comes in and informs us that Ayla is looking for Lapuda Village so the two tribes can come together and battle the Reptites in a final showdown. Well, since we're here, might as well help out, right?

Where did Magus get off to after our battle? Will Goku and the party triumph over the Reptites? And when did Lavos first come to the planet? Find out next time on Chrono Trigger Kai!

Minor update before the one i actually do: The trade hut has new items, however, they offer no weapons for Ginyu. If you want to save some trade items, go get Ayla and use her Charm tech to steal an Aeon Blade off a Megasaur, it's a slight upgrade from the Slasher. Otherwise, hit the Hunting Grounds and get farming.

tFhcFYC.png

Heading north, we find a new area in the forest has opened, the Lapuda Ruins. Basically, the Reptites burned it down and when Kino tried to help, the Reptites kidnapped them. The Elder blames Ayla for this, as the Reptites followed her. Ayla is sorry, but plans to go to the Tyranno Lair and beat the ever loving shit out of the Reptites-but to do that, she needs the "Dactyls".

wnA4qW3.png

The Dactyl Nest has some encounters, but at this point we're powerful enough to blow through them. Ayla doesn't want us to come, but again, we are badasses and we want to come anyway. Hmm...that red star looks a bit strange. Oh well, I'm sure it's nothing important.

Once again, Ayla is a required party member, and I decide to bring Ginyu and his sweet crit rate with us.

Dactyls are basically an early airship for us to use. We can go anywhere in 65 Million BC with them! To bad there's not too many places to go...There's the Tyrano Lair, and some place in the upper right called the "Sun Shrine". Maybe that'll be important.

aDkS9Lm.png

After some minor grinding at the Hunting Grounds for TP (the Nus give 30 TP making them great for learning techs), we head to the Tyranno Lair, and to be perfectly honest, the place is almost a breather level after Magus's Keep. Oh sure, the enemies will still kick your ass if you're being stupid, but the brutal boss fights and limited save points are gone and the mechanics are easy to understand. Plus, Goku should totally have Lightning 2 by now, rendering swarms of dino enemies easy as cake.

j18KrDA.png

We have to head to the right, even though the left is obviously the way up. Heading down does bring us to a prison we can free some Lapuda from, so that's nice. The next floor down as Kino locked up, so breaking him out is probably a good idea-more then that, in fact, breaking him out has him open the way forward for us.

j59FIHd.png

See those buttons? Hitting them causes pits to open up, which will subtract the enemies from our lives. But because I like Experience, I just killed them.

Heading to the right sends us through a couple fights, then a room with two "chests" (they look like eggs in here, in fact, Kino's cell has a chest with a Hi Ether). The one on the left has a High Potion, the other one...opens a pit that sends us to where the original Lapuda cell was. The left takes us onward.

Efvyhah.png

This room is...weird. It's a maze but it doesn't tell you that, instead, when you hit a "forbidden" point, it warps you across the room. The chest in the upper right is inaccessible (though I bet there's a pit above that'll take us down to it), so just grab what you can and move on.

xifVDsb.png

The maze leads to a balcony, and we have to open a gate to get into it (which requires some buttons in another room and a couple fights), and then we meet Nizbel again! He just tells us Azala is further on. Swell guy, that Nizbel. There's even a save point we can use to recover and save our game.

bfndD98.png

But you let us walk right past...oh whatever! Fine, we'll fight!

This fight is a little different. Nizbel does not get shocked-he still gets lowered defense, but he still acts normally when hit with lightning. Also, his defense increases when he is physically attacked. The secret to this battle is in Ayla's duel tech with Goku, Volt Bite. It's a lightning tech so it'll keep doing more and more damage to him, to the point where we can see over 1,000 points of damage. Ginyu should heal, as the bastard does group wide attacks so healing is very helpful. So just Volt Bite him constantly, and you'll win. (Note: It's called Thunder Chomp in the DS version) Be wary, as he does have Electrical Discharge still, but I've already told you to have Ginyu heal so you'll be ready for it.

Once he's dead, save your game and heal up again. Get ready for a final showdown...

Who will win the final battle between humans and reptites? What is the meaning of the Red Star? And if Magus didn't get thrown to this time period, when in the world is he? Find out next time on Chrono Trigger Kai!

The next few areas have some tricks with switches, but really, we're not here for dungeon delving. We're here to fight Azala. First things first: Equip Ruby Vests on everyone, even if you have slightly better armor kicking around. The fight we're about to have is highly fire based, so Ruby Vests will make it a lot easier.

trnA0GC.png

I'm from the future, buddy. It's us.

A roar is heard from the door behind Azala, and she heads out while telling us we'll be hearing more of that "lovely voice".

Hzrs1Zw.png

Say hello to the Black Tyranno. Azala is referring to the Red Star here, and once she turns back to us, she sics the Black Tyranno on us. Time for the final showdown!

The fight is a little strange. Azala, like all dinos, is weak to Lightning, however the Black Tyranno isn't weak to a damn thing-and it has about 10,500 HP. Yes, nearly twice as much as Magus had. Azala only has about 2,700, so all together, you ARE dealing with twice as many hit points as Magus.

Start by beating the ever loving shit out of Azala. She has a lot of psychic based attacks that deal a lot of damage and can put your team to sleep. Her parting shot is Azala Break which does a small amount of damage but also inflicts an HP Down status effect on everyone. While she is weak to lightning, do not use Thunder Chomp/Volt Tackle on her, it actually does LESS damage than if Goku just hits her with his bolt (210 damage versus 300 when I compared).

The Black Tyranno will unleash various attacks, though his fire breath won't do much if you're wearing Ruby Vests. You ARE wearing Ruby Vests, right? The Tyranno will eventually start counting down from 5 to 0, at which point it will unleash a super charged Fire based attack which can produce a team wipe if you're not wearing Ruby Vests, but is laughably weak if you are. When the Tyranno is counting down is the time to strike-it's weak to physical shots, so hit it with your strongest moves and also heal up while it's counting.

JO6ldXa.png

Since Goku's magic was originally called "Light", yes, yes they have. Azala wishes for the primates to remember that the Reptites fought to the bitter end, and Ayla even seems to have some respect for Azala...until a flash of red light reminds everyone that the Red Star exists. Three guesses what it is.

xMCnoDX.png

That's right. The Red Star is Lavos, and Lavos is the meteor that kills all the dinosaurs and ushers in an ice age for the planet.

Kino arrives to save us from the impeding falling star with the Dactyls, and Ayla tries to save Azala, but Azala refuses, saying the death of the Reptites is the will of the earth. More space for us to, uh, RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY!

Oh yeah, that also means the Tyranno Lair is kind of a one time dungeon. Maybe I should have mentioned that...but unless you missed one of the two Triceratoppers, you haven't really lost out on important stuff.

d0UlECz.png

Lavos's impact destroys the Tyranno Lair, and he also burrows deep underground quickly. The party ends up believing that Lavos is the source of the gates due to the time distortion nonsense it can pull. We enter the gate, and instead of taking us to the End of Time...

iAE8cDI.png

Take a look at that timestamp there. We're in the era of Antiquity, 12,000 BC.

What awaits us in this unknown time? Where is Lavos, and how can we even fight him? And will I finally get to the Arena of the Ages, now that the final time period is opened up? Find out next time, in Chrono Trigger Kai!

You can head left to the Terra Cave, but there's nothing for us there. Instead head right to a strange building called a "Skyway", and enter it to reach...

lHZ9lPU.png

The magical kingdom of Zeal. It's all set to Corridors of Time, how nice.

XGxIzqt.png

Boy: "One among you will shortly perish."

THIS IS YOUR FINAL SPOILER WARNING. IF YOU DO NOT WANT HEAVY PLOT SPOILERS, TURN BACK NOW.

Everyone's a bit weirded out by that. This is the small town of Enhasa, where we meet the Enlightened Ones. Also, when we fought Magus, part of his pre-fight banter was that "the black winds are howling again", so put two and two together and...this may be young Magus. In fact, it is.

There's a secret lab here, and three books to open it. These books, when opened, start shooting off water, wind, or fire. Open them in that order (Upper right = Water, Upper left = Wind, and by the entrance = Fire) and a secret room will open, with a Nu inside. Talk to him and you'll fight 6 Nu. Beat them all to get a Speed and Magic capsule (one of each, not one that increases both by 1 or something).

We then use another land bridge to reach another skyway, and then we reach Zeal proper. Performing the same riddle trick in Kajar allows us into a room where we find the Black Gemstone, which enables the Eternal Darkness Triple Tech. Some Triple Techs are learned naturally, others require an accessory. In the end, except for a couple, simply don't bother with Triple Techs. They end up doing less damage then your party would if they acted on their own.

7Usv9MT.png

The music has also shifted to be INCREDIBLY sinister.

What a great place!

DGtVBY3.png

Wait, so you're telling me that Lavos hears prayers and makes that a reality? And, we learn this elsewhere, but there's an underwater palace being built that may have something to do with him?

In other words, Ia! Ia! Lavos Fthagn! Ph'nglui mglw'nfah Lavos R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!

iIGuO5l.png

To complete the whole Dark God thing, this is the Mammon Machine, which is used to extract power from Lavos itself. Basically, this is DOOM 4 decades before anyone thought of mining Hell for resources. Mammon, by the way, is a Hebrew word meaning material wealth. The idea is that one cannot serve both God and Mammon. Here, this machine just drives people crazy.

Pq5Qic6.png

We have to go to the bedchambers and see a scene between Schala and Janus before we can come to this door. Well, we can come here any time, but that scene has Schala come to this door and open it with her pendant...but when we try it, it doesn't work. The ladies in the room tell us that when Schala "communes" with the Mammon Machine, it glows with power...well, might as well give it a shot.

Head to the Mammon Machine and "commune" with it after trying to open the door, then return. Presto, the door opens.

MXowY0L.png

Inside the Queen's chamber, we meet the Prophet, the Queen, Lord Dalton, and Schala. The Prophet is Magus, he's been here the whole time. We can optionally meet Lord Dalton at the Blackbird outside of the town of Katar, but I like meeting him here.

Imgur decided to fuck up, so enjoy my text based description of the rest of these events:

Dalton throws a Golem boss at us. Regardless if you win or lose, the plot proceeds regardless, so just let your crew die. The Queen throws the party into a weird magical prison, but Schala and Janus come to break us out. Schala asks us to save the Guru of Life who was banished to the Mountain of Woe for opposing the Queen.

The Prophet arrives, but it turns out he loves his sister too much to directly oppose her. Magus has yet to realize we're actually on the same team. We are taken back to the Gate we used to get to 12,000 BC, and then Schala seals it shut on Magus's orders.

Ginyu (since he was in the party) asks if we've seen that Door we unsealed before. We have, WAYYYY into the future...our next destination lies, back into the future!

Will Goku and party return to 12,000 BC? Will we save the Guru of Life? And what other tricks can we do now that the Pendant is powered up? Find out next time, on Chrono Trigger Kai!

With the Dreamstone Pendant powered up, we can run around and unseal a ton of chests that we couldn't before. There is a slight trick to it-the chests can be opened in 1,000 AD and 600 AD, but if you grab the chest in 1,000 AD first, you can grab both. To add to this, SOME chests can be upgraded if you touch them in 600 AD but don't open them. Some chests also require you to have the airship, which is coming-this is a Square game after all. So we'll do the stuff you don't need to have an airship for first.

The upgradeable ones we can reach are in the Elder's House of Porre, the Truce Inn, and Guardia Castle. The non-upgradeable ones are in Guardia Forest, the Heckran Cave (1,000 AD only), the Magic Cave (600 AD only), and Medina Village-the weird pyramid seal thing to the north of the village can be opened now. So go around and upgrade/crack open every chest.

Medina Village offers you a choice between a powerful helm and a powerful sword for Goku. Take the sword. There are enemies you can charm the helm off of much later in the game, while the sword is one of a kind. It also pushes Goku's speed up a ton.

Once you have all the gear, head to Proto Dome and go through the Sewers, remember that mini side update? If you didn't do it then, go do it now. Head to the Keeper's Dome after getting out of the sewers (on the other side, obviously), and head to the back where the sealed door is.

LTI50Iy.png

So the Wise One is no longer with us. However, in the back are a bunch of "glowy objects" that when interacted with play recordings of Belthasar, the Guru of Reason. He explains that Lavos is a massive parasite, feeding on the planet itself, and though he endeavored to return home, he approached the end of his life as he completed his greatest work: The Time Machine known as the Wings of Time. It is ours now, and though we have little chance of success, it is still a chance.

Now it's time to return to 12,000 BC! No Gate Seal will stop us now!

Will Goku and friends save the Guru of Life? Can they defeat Lavos in the end? Are we ready to reap a bloody trail across time and space? Find out next time on Chrono Trigger Kai!

Don't forget that the pendant can opened the sealed doors in 2300AD, such as the one in Arris Dome.

Don't forget that the pendant can opened the sealed doors in 2300AD, such as the one in Arris Dome.

You're right, I didn't mention those, but the gear on offer in those rooms is significantly less impressive then the Plates and Vests-elemental absorption is awesome. There's some accessories, but the best on offer is the Charm Top for Ayla, which increases her Charm success rate.

Anyway, update coming.

o1XwgMW.png

The Terra Cave was inaccessible to us before as the ladder was pulled up. Now we can get to it, and the village of Algetty. This is where all the people who can't use magic got banished to. We can also get up to the Mountain of Woe from here, which is good.

The shop here has Radiant Helms which are a slight upgrade from whatever your male characters are using (women can't use them), and also offers Luminous Robes (good armor for your ladies) and Radiant Plates which are garbage since we have all the elemental absorbing plates. It's better to stock up on consumables here, he sells High Potions, Athenian Waters, and Ethers, so grab as much as you need.

Trust me, you're gonna need it, if not for the Mountain then for the next dungeon.

And, get ready for some autism, because I've been holding this bit in me for a while, but the Elder of Algetty shares some info with us:

OujBaTf.png

(The elder refers to Lord Janus here, who is said to have power rivaling Schala's)

Basically, Magus isn't a villain. Here's the timeline of events: Janus is born, has incredible magical talent, but he watches as the quest for more and more power turns his mother into an evil maniacal bitch and slowly destroys the only person in the world he cares for, Schala. The Mammon Machine then pisses off Lavos something fierce, something we'll get to see, and Janus is thrown from 12,000 BC to 600 AD. Meanwhile, the fate of Schala is unknown until we intervene and alter events so that Schala is absorbed into Lavos-oops.

From there, he is found by Ozzie and subtly manipulated by Ozzie-or so Ozzie thinks. In truth, Janus (now Magus) has one goal: destroy Lavos and get revenge. From that point on, he unleashes the full might of his magical potential, and anyone who gets in his way gets a heaping helping of go fuck yourself. He simply does not care about other people and the world at large, viewing it all as an obstacle to his main goal, avenging his sister.

So what you have is an incredibly tragic character set up as a villain when in truth, he's still a scared little child, wielding incredible power and raging at the heavens for taking his life, his home, and his family away from him. In the end, that's why he can join us after the events of the Ocean Palace, because again, he's not truly "evil", he's just incredibly angry and misguided.

It's stuff like this that makes Chrono Trigger one of the greats-character development is everything, and Magus has it in spades. We get to see a lot more around everyone else as we proceed towards endgame, but Magus has one of the deepest and most fulfilling character arcs.

Okay, autism over. Who am I kidding, we're in a Let's Sperg thread, the autism never ends.

lmYPoVp.png

We have to fight some Mudbeasts on our way to the Mountain of Woe. You want Ayla with you, and you want the Charm Top, because these guys give up Rainbow Helms when charmed, rendering those helms you just bought completely fucking pointless because Rainbow Helms are AWESOME. They have massive defense and cut Lightning Damage in half like the Ruby Vests did. Be careful though, every hit they take increases their attack-including Charm attempts!

NWyD3x2.png

At the end of the Den, you get a weird miniboss encounter. A Mud Imp with a Red and Blue Mudbeast. Having Lucca is good here as the Blue beast is weak to fire and the Red one is weak to Water. However, you also want Ayla so you're gonna have to be lacking somewhere, because the Blue Mudbeast has a Charmable Mermaid Helm and the Mud Imp has a Charmable Speed Capsule. Kill the beasts first, then kill the Mud Imp (or let him run away). They counter everything, but if you hit the Mud Imp they do a full party counter, so focus on one at a time and don't get tricky with AoE effects.

The Mermaid Helm, for the record, is similar to the Rainbow Helms but for Water instead of Lightning.

8WyFlT5.png

The Mudbeast Den will be de-populated after killing the boss, so we can run back, rest for free, and head on without getting demolished in the process. Climb up the chain at the end of the den to reach the Mountain of Woe, and no, the strange filter around the edges of the screen is not me getting artsy with Hipstergram, it's actually part of the game.

Those rock enemies are called Rubble, and they offer 100 TP, an awesome amount, but they have crazy evasion (requiring critical hits, which never miss, to kill) and use Omnilock to prevent you doing anything but basic attacking. A fight against them is a fight against your patience.

The second area of the mountain doesn't have much, but it does have Gargoyles that can be Charmed for a Heavy Hand for Mosco. Most of what's on offer is weaker then what we have (like the sword for Goku we can get out of the bomber birds, or the Platnium Helm in a chest), or just consumables. Still good to grab everything.

AcSPXqy.png

These enemies appear in the third area, and are called Death Lilys. They can be charmed for a Smiter's Blade for Ginyu, and I must admit we are reaching a point where the Masamune is being outclassed. We can power it up later, but the Smiter's Blade packs a 105 Attack whallop and deals 150% damage to enemies classified as "magical", combine that with the fact we can now strap a better accessory to Ginyu and it ends up being better all around until we power up the Masamune.

We're coming on to the end of the dungeon here, and I will warn you-the Mountain of Woe is a one time deal. No going back to get stuff you missed, so Charm and loot your heart out!

cR8P96u.png

When you reach the Peak, do not move until you've equipped the Red and Black Plates to someone. You'll thank me when the boss jumps you.

t5AIPlz.png

Meet Giga Gaia. He sucks a big fat one, but luckily, there are things you can do to make your life easier. First off, if both of his arms are intact, he will use an AoE attack that deals Fire damage. Also, his attacks are Shadow based, hence the need to put the proper plates on. You may not get much mileage out of it, but getting a free heal from his moves is useful. He has an Attack and a Defense Arm, the Defense Arm heals him and throws Water attacks, while the Attack Arm will half your HP and do something called "Gaia Magnade" that sucks. So, after preparation, what do?

Goku and Ayla can use Falcon Hit, which makes a straight line across the screen and hits both arms on Giga Gaia. Frog is, of course, just great to have around. Giga Gaia will revive his arms if one or both is destroyed, so kill them and then do your best to smash Giga Gaia quickly. He has no elemental weaknesses, but luckily no immunities or (god forbid) absorptions, so hit him with everything you got. Two Falcon Strikes is enough to break his arms, and then when he restores them, one Falcon Strike killed them both again. So, just keep breaking his arms and whacking Giga Gaia and eventually, he'll go down.

The Guru of Life is released, only for it to be revealed as...

jY26lPX.png

...Melchior? Wait, we saw him in 1,000 AD, how did...

Melchior doesn't know how we somehow know him, but quickly dismisses such concerns, instead focusing on the Queen and the palace. He states that the stronger the Mammon Machine becomes, the crazier Queen Zeal becomes, because Lavos is literally consuming her soul. Once again, Ia! Ia! Lavos Fthagn!

The Mountain of Woe suddenly breaks free of its chain and drops into the ocean, how this doesn't cause a massive flood is beyond me.

Schala arrives to speak with Melchior, and swears not to activate the Mammon Machine because apparently the machine requires her. However, Dalton shows up, fireballs Melchior in the face, and kidnaps Schala to go do precisely that. We have our next objective it seems-hit the Ocean Palace and destroy the Mammon Machine before the power of the machine awakens Lavos!

DLRGSyu.png

To help us in this endeavor, Melchior gives us the Ruby Knife. The red stone he mentions is actually Dreamstone, the same stuff we used to repair the Masamune. It seems that Dreamstone can absorb magic...which is why the Masamune was able to drop Magus's defense, because all his defense was magic based. What a nice touch to the world's lore.

Will Goku and friends pierce the defenses surrounding the Ocean Palace? Will we destroy the Mammon Machine? Or will Lavos awaken and destroy us all? Find out next time on Chrono Trigger Kai!

I may not have fully explained how bad Giga Gaia is. He's easy as hell when you know to use the Falcon Strike, and to equip stuff for the elements he uses, but since it was so easy I feel I didn't properly prepare you. So what happens when you don't have the Plates or the Strike?

First off, he starts by IMMEDIATELY cracking off his big AoE Fire and Shadow Waves. This means your party can start a few hundred HP in the hole before you even get to move. Now moving on to the arms, the Attack Arm has some nasty super hits that deal a lot of damage and even has an HP halving move. The Defense arm can also get in on the action by throwing some water based attacks out (not unlike our primary healers). You don't just want to kill the arms, you want to kill each arm within about the same timeframe-basically, you want them both to die within a few seconds of each other to maximize the time Giga Gaia spends unable to attack, he can't do anything if he doesn't have his arms. The Falcon Strike is just an easy way to do this, since that shit does 1,300 damage (roughly) to EACH arm, meaning it takes two Falcon Strikes to destroy the arms initially as they have 2,000 HP each.

How do you get it? Easy. If you've been following this guide, this means that prior to the Mountain of Woe, Ayla has Cat Attack, the tech directly behind the Rock Throw/Boulder Toss required for Falcon Strike. Goku has Cleave, hell, if he doesn't have Raise at this point you are doing EVERYTHING wrong. Cleave and Boulder Toss combine to make Falcon Strike. Even if you shelved Ayla immediately after the Tyranno lair, swapping her in and killing one Rubble (which is recommended, she has the accuracy to hit them on rare occasion with basic, non critical attacks) will likely get you enough TP to get Boulder Toss. She needs 200 total so even if you made the second Nizbel fight harder on yourself by not using Volt Tackle, 2 rubbles at 100 TP each is enough.

So now you have Falcon Strike. Without the Plates, or even with them, you'll need a healer. I use Ginyu (aka Frog) because his Heal spell blows everyone else's healing out of the fucking water, no pun intended. If Goku/Chrono and Ayla are quick enough, the two Falcon Strikes will come out long before Giga Gaia can pull any more AoE shenanigans. From there, it's a simple matter of basic attacking the shit out of him. When he does resummon his arms, use Falcon Strike to kill them again.

There, now my autism has been satisfied, now that I have effectively "Until We Win"d this boss fight. If you DON'T use Falcon Strikes, then Giga Gaia's attacks cover enough elemental diversity that no matter what gear you have, something is hurting you, and they hurt enough that, trust me, just make it easy on yourself.

Grab Bulma for this next part. You'll need some Fire power...I'll see myself out. You'll want Goku, Bulma, and either Ginyu or Nadia for the guardians that await us.

Head back to Zeal Palace and go straight for the Queen's Throne.

ygDPP0j.png

In the Throne, Dalton attacks us. He uses Iron Sphere exclusively as an attack and a counter, which only halves our HP. Keep the party above 150 regardless, as his parting shot is a "Burp!" attack that hits us for about that amount. I recommend using magic attacks, he seems to have a high enough evasion that he doesn't care about physical.

When he dies, he leaves behind a "gate" after warping out that takes us to the Ocean Palace.

We meet Mune just inside the Palace, and he tells us that dark energy gathers. We get a brief cutscene where the Queen cranks the power of the Mammon Machine, but using it seems to drain Schala, something that Magus (who is also there) notices, and he wants to help but he has to keep up his facade or else he won't get his shot at Lavos.

The music is great for setting your mind at ease:

piBp4ED.png

Many enemies, or at least the Scouters, are color coded for your convenience. Hit the enemies with their color (lightning for yellow, red for fire, blue for water) and they'll take tons of damage. Otherwise it's a slow slog as they have wicked physical defense.

Within the Palace, we can find a lot of cool gear. A Rune Blade for Ginyu, a Shockwave (pictured above in the chest) for Bulma, and an Aeonian Suit and Helm (the helm is trash if you have the Rainbow helms).

Alright, the dungeon is a little...weird. The first room is sort of an octagon, and we need to go to rooms in each of the four corners. There are three buttons to push, the bottom two "corners" are connected. Then, head south. There's a staircase to take, go down it.

At the bottom, another cutscene plays. Queen Zeal believes she's one step from eternal life, but Schala senses the dark power of Lavos. Everyone but the Queen and Magus wants to stop, and the Queen won't allow it to stop.

After this cutscene, we find a save point. This may be a good time to swap Bulma out with Ayla, but if you want to continue to use her, go ahead. We definitely need Ayla for the boss fight, it's another one we can ace with Falcon Strike.

O8soAdS.png

We have an elevator ride before us, one that will result in a large number of battles as we make our way down. The enemies are not new to us, so use the strategies you learned fighting these guys earlier to take them all out.

Once the elevator ride is done, we have some arbitrary bullshit to do in the next room. Kill some enemies in a couple side rooms, click on some switches, then we can open the way to the next area. There is one final save point, I suggest you use it to save and to Shelter up.

5QZx8An.png

Well the Undersea Palace was already brutal, but this is because technically, this is the last required dungeon of the game! *blows noisemaker* But there's a ton of stuff we can do later on to make the finale easier, and we definitely wanna do that.

There are actually multiple ways to approach this boss fight. One is the brute force method, of which I am using. Falcon Strike hits them both for at least 1,000 damage, and they have 7,000 HP each. Having Ayla also allows you to charm Magic Capsules off of them, if you're worried about that.

The other option is the elemental switcharoo. See, the Golems will copy the last element used on them, including Physical. Copying a new element resets their turn, so with Goku, Bulma, and Nadia/Ginyu (or even Robo if you feel like it) you can effectively stunlock them just by using level 2 magic over and over. At least, that's what the guides I have say, but Falcon Strike does a lot more damage a lot faster and with a lot less MP...I recommend Falcon Strike.

The caveat to this is that the Golem Twins are VERY fast, able to outpace Goku with maxed out 16 Speed, so whichever method you choose, be quick with it!

Once they're dead, Dalton runs off. Don't even bother healing or saving, just head forward-there's a cutscene, and then...some very nasty stuff happens.

tIeMZmL.png

A lot of shit happens in a small amount of time. First off, the Ruby Knife is tossed by Goku and it turns out the Masamune and the Ruby Knife are one and the same. The sword fails to stop the summoning, and Lavos awakens. He's a little pissed off that this tribe of monkeys is sucking away his juice, so he's gonna nuke everyone.

NY0Q6NE.png

Including us. This is another hopeless boss fight, though it can be won, just like the first Golem battle. Feel free to let Lavos nuke the shit out of you though.

Magus then appears to try and kill Lavos, but Queen Zeal shows up to call him a weakling and say he's nothing more than a false prophet and a grazing for Lavos. Also, Lavos's life force runs through us all-and that's not wrong, Lavos has been controlling the genetic evolution of mankind since he fell from the heavens. Basically, we are his cattle.

Goku stands in an effort to fight against Lavos...and then this happens.

Lavos flat out fucking disintegrates Goku in one shot.

Schala then pulls the ultimate of heroic sacrifices and teleports Magus and our remaining party away. This...changes the timeline somewhat, and results in Schala now being a part of Lavos, or something. Basically, in the original, unaltered timeline, she was able to teleport herself out. Now? Since we had to muck everything up, she dies saving us.

(:_(

Lavos then nukes the kingdom of Zeal, causing all the floating castles to come crashing down, and also causing that tidal wave I wanted when the Mountain of Woe took a swan dive. Our party wakes up elsewhere, down one member...down one IMPORTANT member...

So, to recap. Goku is dead, Schala is dead, the Queen of Zeal has merged with Lavos and become super powerful, Zeal is destroyed, Janus and Melchior got dragged off to the future, and the most depressing party screen appears before us, as if to say "yes, he is in fact dead, now make a party without him."

What has become of the world beyond? Is Lavos just too powerful for our band of plucky teenagers? And is Goku truly dead? Find out next time on Chrono Trigger Kai!

The surviving village has a few houses, and a Nu selling stuff that washes up on shore. Right now, it's just consumables but stock up on anything you burnt through in the Undersea Palace.

Head to the Village Commons, but don't talk to the Elder until you're ready to proceed.

ixyLMPQ.png

Dalton shows up to make everyone's lives miserable. Not only did he survive, he has what's left of the Kingdom of Zeal, which is a handful of soldiers and the Blackbird airship. He swipes our Epoch and captures us by making us turn around and fireballing us in the back-somehow, he still has magic despite the rest of the "Enlightened Ones" losing it. Asshole. We never have another boss fight with him if you were wondering.

KN9d5r5.png

We wake up in a cell on the Blackbird, with our gear, items, and money all taken. In groups without Ayla, this is a mandatory stealth mission as being spotted sends us back to the cell. We're also unable to swap party members so if you didn't have Ayla, you're in trouble. With Ayla, however, it just becomes a "only Ayla can attack" dungeon until we get our gear back.

Yes, despite the fact our heroes can cast world-devastating magic, they refuse to fight without a weapon.

Your character's stuff is scattered around the ship. You can creep around in the rafters and eventually find where all your stuff is hidden. If you have Ayla, or once you get one character's stuff back, it's worth nothing that your enemies do not respawn, so any kills are permanent.

Remember the room that has the party inventory when you find it. Once you have everyone's stuff, go there and use the door in the back. It'll take you up top on the Blackbird, which is where we need to go.

vxqcsLn.png

Once on the wing, you'll end up pushed to the bottom left. The Golem Overlord will appear, boast a bit, do a countdown...and then do absolutely nothing, because he's afraid of heights. Kill him or not, do as though wilt, he runs off on his own eventually.

eSsCRA7.png

Dalton's been busy, turning our time machine into a flying time machine. He commands the background music to stop, and it does, shifting from "To Far Away Times" to the more panicky music that plays when the team has to move fast no I don't remember the name.

Dalton also put weapons on the thing, and fires at us. Our team decides "fuck this nonsense" and JUMPS ONTO THE NOW FLYING EPOCH. Yes, from the flying Blackbird plane. Yes it is fucking awesome.

Al2RBBv.png

We have another boss fight with Dalton, so I guess I lied earlier. We don't kill him though. This fight is practically identical to the last one, only now he has some direct damage attacks that do about...60 HP of damage. How impressive.

At the end he tries to summon the Golem Overlord...only to not get the Overlord and instead get sucked away into his own portal, leaving us with a flying time machine. Sweet! We can go everywhere now!

As an added bonus, we even blow up the Blackbird as a parting gift.

We return to the village commons, and learn that a strange man also washed ashore. He went to the North Cape, and no one has ever seen him befo-It's Magus, okay?

Magus tells us what happened in the unaltered timeline: The three Gurus were there, and they all got thrown through timegates to various times-Melchior went to 1,000 AD, Belthasar to 2,300 AD, and Gaspar went to the End of Time. Janus was also thrown into 600 AD.

Magus then goes on to explain that he convinced the Queen he was an oracle, and he worked to draw Lavos out, as all he ever wanted to do was to kill the damn thing. Magus calls Goku a "fool" and that the weak will be destroyed quickly. If Ginyu is in the party, he will offer a fight, which turns into a one-on-one match between Ginyu and Magus. If you say no, however...

1ob3aCA.png

Ginyu then gets his own bit of character development as he lets go of vengeance. Magus turns away and doesn't talk, but as we leave, he offers to come with us.

MwrG383.png

We just have to gather the seven Dragonballs and-oh wait, no, we're not in that world.

Return to the Epoch, and we have one last little thing to see:

0S1vpUT.png

Observe the rise of the Black Omen, the remnants of the Undersea Palace and now the seat of the Queen of Zeal. But our course is laid out for us: Gaspar, the Guru of Time who now resides at the End of Time knows how to save Goku, or so Magus claims. So, we send the Epoch to the End of Time.

ARvq3Yy.png

The old man does not reveal himself as the Guru of Time, but he plays a song for us. If you go to leave, he yells at you to come back, and presents you with the Chrono Trigger. He then tells us the one who crafted our wings of time can show us how to use it.

Will we be able to revive Goku? What awaits us at the mighty Death's Peak? And what has opened up for us now that the Black Omen has appeared, along with vortexes in 65 million BC and 600 AD? Find out next time on Chrono Trigger Kai!

Okay, so...little bit of a secret. Now that we have our Epoch back, there's no more "required" dungeons except for the final battle with Lavos. Everything up to and including resurrecting Goku is 100% optional. But since we have time, let's do it!

So we need to return to the Keeper's Dome, easily done with our sweet airship. Also, our levels are reaching a point where we can take on Spekkio's level 30 form. Make sure everyone is wearing at least one elemental absorbing plate, except the Black Plate, since he doesn't use Shadow. Wear the Rainbow Helms, except for who's wearing the White Plate, have him wear a Mermaid Helm. Assuming you still have all this gear and some of it wasn't vaporized with Goku...

Double.png

A double? Where are we gonna get one of those? Well, Belthasar has an idea-a magician named Bekkler could make one, and he loves festivals. Hey, wasn't there a festival that this whole game started at?

Way back at the fair, there was a tent where we could use Silver Points to play little minigames and get rewards. The 40 point one awarded us with a doll of Goku, and that's our Chekov's Gun for the game. If we didn't ever talk to him before, Bekkler offers to let us have it even if we lose, but the longer we can stay in the game (a Simon Says game using button presses) the less he'll charge us in gold. So let's go beat up Gato a few times since he goes down in one hit to us and gives out 15 silver points.

Once you have the doll, head to Goku's house to collect it. You'll need to head up to his room and talk to his mother, and of course no one can bring themselves to say "yeah, he's dead". Now return to the future. And go for Death Peak!

...or not. Head back and talk to Belthasar one last time. That way, he can dispatch the "They" that need to help us climb Death's Peak. He asks us to shut off the construct he is using to house his mind, and I do.

Climb.png

Climbing Death's Peak is rough. The winds will throw you off, but you'll get some trees to hide behind. Hold down B and walk towards the trees while standing behind them to prevent yourself being thrown off anyway. Don't run towards them while the winds are at their highest intensity, you will slip and be thrown off. From there, it's mostly just high level monsters, yay.

Lavos Spawn.png

Oh yeah, and Lavos Spawn. Yes, Lavos has babies. It turns out that the "Day of Lavos" was actually him just throwing his kids off into space to do exactly what he did to this world to countless others. Did I mention how much Lavos resembles a Lovecraftian Ancient One? Because he does.

Attack the mouth, as attacking the Shell causes it to counterattack. The mouth has 4,000 HP, you can charm an Elixir out of it (though the later ones we can fight on the Black Omen have Safe Helms), and unlike the shell you can use our magic on it if you like.

Icy Path.png

This particular area is an icy path that you can fall off of. As you walk on it, you'll slide down. You can exploit this but it might take a couple tries to get past it.

It should be noted, the Lavos Spawn are counted as "bosses", so they are one time deals. So even if you fall, you won't have to deal with the Lavos Spawn again.

Speaking of Lavos Spawn, the third one leaves his shell behind. We're told to push and climb it, and there's a half "ladder" (really a climbing path like on most mountains) nearby. 2 and 2 make push it to the half ladder and climb up. Then we reach the peak.

With doll in hand, we can use the Time Egg/Chrono Trigger to go back to the moment of Goku's death, and swap him out with the doll. Yup, that's the plan, and it works. Also, the reason I had Ayla, Mosco, and Magus is because of curiousity-there's a list of who will be the one to jump back in time to save Goku, and Nadia tops the list, Bulma is second, and Ginyu is third, leading some autists on the internet to think that Ginyu is gay. But I don't care about that, I care about who is number four. I think it's Ayla but she happened to be my party leader so it might not be her.

Anyway, an eclipse happens, and we return to that moment in time, swapping out the Goku doll for the real Goku. Time is frozen so that we can do this. A quick swap later and...

Welcome Back.png

Good morning, Chrono.

Goku looks around and gets welcomed back by his friends, and Magus (do remember, the last time they met, Magus was throwing them into a time portal and or trying to kill him).

Companions.png

The Old Man welcomes us back, as we automatically warp to the End of Time. He tells us of vague visions he has regarding special sub-quests we can do to empower our party. Each companion corresponds to a specific quest, though it's not clear who lines up with what. Still, we can chat with our buddies to get hints towards our next objectives.

And so, next time on Chrono Trigger Kai: Sidequests galore! I'll see you next time, my gentle kiwis.

Alright, so, I'm probably gonna do a ton of sidequest stuff in a series of updates. We're doing them in the order that the Old Man has the visions in, so we're starting with this:

Quest 1: "A forest brought back to life by the sheer determination of a woman in the Middle Ages..."

To start this quest, we need to go to Zeal, oddly. Back in one of the cities (or I think the Palace, actually), a woman was given a plant by the Guru of Life. If you tell her to keep it, the next part of the quest will open to you. Head to 600 AD, and head to Fiona's house on the continent south of Zeal. Bring a Water user, Mosco, and Bulma with you. Or at least that's the party I picked because I know the story (I did this one back in the SNES version) and it makes the most sense to me, Ginyu is here because we need Water.

Oh, did you not tell the woman in Zeal to keep the tree? No worries, you can go to the Village Commons and tell her to plant it. Did you tell her to burn it? Well...you might be fucked then. Whoops. Hope you had another save!

zMLpCJx.png

That sapling she's talking about is the one the Guru of Life gave the young woman in Zeal. It could restore the forest, but with the monsters in a cave nearby killing everything she plants, she is worried. Her husband advises us that Water will kill the monsters easily. So Ginyu, you're up!

nOi1div.png

The Sunken Cave does have a cool floor, and the chests are surrounded by weird whirlpools that make it hard to actually click on them. Ginyu is your friend here, as his water spells will smash through the opposition. Water spells will "harden sand", lowering the enemy's defense.

Head south, grabbing what loot you can, and be prepared to get jumped a lot. You may need to chug some Hi-Ethers for Ginyu while you're here. The Vilepillars hit hard, they suck.

The second area gives us a sneak preview of the boss, and Mosco states that battling monsters that can move through the earth goes against all logical protocols. The monster causes earthquakes as he moves, and we have to run into him to fight him-basically, it's a boss we have to run up to to fight.

lWhjc94.png

This guy, depending on version, is called Retunite (SNES) or Melphyx (DS). He takes after the Zombor from the Zenan Bridge, but there's a third part: A core. Unlike the rest of the monsters, he is actually quite strong against magic, even water spells, and his core absorbs everything but water spells. Water spells still lower his defense, which is what we're after, even though they do 0 damage. Work from the top down: His top half has all the most dangerous attacks, his core needs to be killed before his body pars or it'll run away, and the legs are left for last. His core will heal his other body parts, but this is done at the cost of 200 damage to the core-out of 1,000.

Once the core is down, his body parts will get a dramatic rise in defense for every physical hit you crank out. So start the battle with a casting of Water 2, kill his top, kill his core, then have Ginyu constantly hit the legs with water (when you don't need him to heal) while your other party members, whoever they be, use their strongest physical techs. In this case, Bulma was reduced to healing item duty, which is not a bad place to be all things considered.

Also, the Red and Black Plates make for good defenses, his techs are Fire and Shadow based. If you have another elemental caster, like Bulma in this case, you can throw non-Water magic at the Core to heal it and keep it going for longer so that he doesn't kill his own core and doesn't get his defense buff too early.

o1fxWX1.png

Fiona says it will take centuries to restore the forest, and Mosco decides to abuse the fact that he is a robot to help out. Agree to it, then warp to 1,000 AD.

Oh, and save. Trust me on this one.

Djmf96B.png

What was once a stretch of desert on the way to Porre in 1,000 AD is now a thriving forest. Enter the shrine and find Mosco, broken and deactivated now. Also in the shrine is a hat seller, who sells status resistant caps including the Vigiliant Cap which blocks ALL status ailments. Worth it!

ad0oXav.png

Mosco greets whoever the party leader is and says it's good to see them after 400 years. We celebrate by making camp, and Mosco philosophizes. Mosco theorizes that some strange entity that represents the life of the planet wanted the party to see the past events we have witnessed, almost as if the planet itself is reflecting on its own life. Seeing as how we always seem to find ourselves caught up in the greatest moments of history, he may be correct. Ginyu mentions that the memories that grieve us are the most profound, and Nadia asks Bulma if there's a moment she wants to go back to.

There is.

In the middle of the night, Bulma awakens. She heads off on her own (well, we have to control her but she's flying solo for this) and a strange gate has appeared. This one is Red, instead of all the other ones we've seen. We go to Bulma's house several years ago...

So what happened in Bulma's past that she regrets? Well, when she was a kid, Taban was as much of an inventor as he is now. Bulma accidentally activated a machine that she couldn't stop and the machine ended up crippling her mother's legs, leaving her unable to walk. Bulma became an engineer specifically to prevent any of that ever happening again. And now, we get to change history for the better!

Also, Bulma's mother is named "Lara". Remember that, it's the fucking password to the machine. You can learn this if you head to the kitchen, which if you head downstairs from Bulma's room (where you start), it's the door between the staircases. Head outside to the main room, and you'll get to see the scene unfold.

Once it begins, you have a blinking dot. Head to it and click on it, advance pass the "enter password" dialogue, then enter the password by pushing your controller's buttons. This will stop the machine and save Lara.

However, wouldn't this remove Bulma's need to get interested in machines? Without her mother getting crippled, would she care as much as she does about safety?

9vzt3Qe.png

Nope. It turns out watching your mother nearly die is a perfect catalyst for wanting to prevent accidents. Bulma's two diary entries are quite the opposites, first she didn't care much about science ("Girls don't need to know that stuff!") to what you see above. This is why you made that save, by the way, so you can save scum it if you need to. The gate back waits for us, and without anything to do in this time period, it's time to head back.

Mosco is there to greet her, and seems to know what transpired. Regardless of result (though, you want to save her, right?), Mosco gives us a Green Dream item. It is an accessory that provides an automatic revive once.

Now head to Bulma's house. You will find Lara sitting in the master bedroom if you head up to it, but she immediately pops up and starts walking and says she'll go for a walk once she finishes the housework.

This isn't even one of our companions sidequests, it's actually marked as Fiona's sidequest. So, none down, six to go. Let's get rolling, boys.

Quest 2: "The fortress of one of Magus's three former generals in the Middle Ages..."

Magus's quest, and Magus even flat out tells us that Ozzie had a fortress in the style of his own keep. There's a small island to the east of Magus's keep, only reachable by air, and that is where we will find Ozzie's Fort.

Ozzie taunts us at the beginning of the fort, unless Magus is there. He calls Magus a traitor and rushes off, wondering why Magus abandoned his fellow fiends to lick humanity's boots. I think Ozzie is slightly crazy.

rtVzKBk.png

The other generals have been resurrected...somehow, and Flea promises to punish Magus like the bad bad boy he is. We have to start with a couple of practically joke boss fights, Flea Plus and Super Slash (we fight him next) have 2,500 HP each and no real tactics besides essentially spamming really weak attacks. Kill them.

There is a funny scene between the Flea and Slash fights where Ozzie throws some enemies on conveyor belts on you, the battle music starts up...and then they fall in the pits at the end of the belts, and the music putters out.

jKr14oI.png

After the Slash fight, Ozzie tries tricking you with the world's most obvious trap. Ignore it, and an imp will spring it for you so you can get the Full Ether in the chest. There's also a secret room to find, move along the bottom wall on the right (not the 'lower' one, the one that seems slightly raised) and you'll open the secret hallway with three chests containing Magus's super gear, the Doom Sickle (gets stronger as allies are KO'ed), the Gloom Helm (status immunity) and the Gloom Cape (supreme defense). There's also a Magic Capsule to grab.

With everything collected, head onward.

BqhidAV.png

The items they mention? Ozzie Pants, Flea Bustier, and Slasher 2. Yes, Ayla can charm them all away. Yes, you fucking should charm them all away.

They have some nasty triple techs, and will counter any attack. If you use an AoE magic spell, they will counter individually. The best strategy, since they don't absorb any elements, is to charm all the stuff you can (get Slash and Flea's first), then focus on killing Super Slash. Flea will run away if Slash dies, but the opposite is not true. Slash will die if Ozzie does, but we're trying to make this easier on ourselves and Ozzie has 6,000 HP, while Slash and Flea only have 4,000. So, you know what to do, steal, then kill. Magus's Dark Bomb is great, it does 1,000 damage all on its own and the bosses aren't clumped together enough for it to hit more then one person.

Once Ozzie's on his own, he doesn't counterattack. In fact, all he does is combo with his buddies to counterattack according to the guide I have, so relax once you have him alone.

Slasher 2 may be the only thing you end up using. It's a great sword for Goku, until you get his ultimate weapon. Ozzie Pants take up your helmet slot and are powerful, but give you permanent confusion so you best have some sort of status protection and for the love of God do not take them into the final battle with Lavos, as Lavos removes the status protection effect of all your gear. The Flea Bustier is an accessory that gives +12 Magic Defense, strong, but there are better options.

Ozzie claims that Magus lied to him, saying that Magus said he wanted to create a better world for fiends. Magus responds by saying all he cared for was power. I almost prefer the SNES version where Magus fires back by taunting instead, but whatever. This launches a joke boss fight where he encases himself in ice again, and there's another switch to hit. If you feel like it, charm a second pair of Ozzie Pants from him. Hit the switch and end the fight.

We have to do this twice as the first switch sends us back to the last room, but the second time we try this, a cat walks up and flicks the switch for us.

For fun, head to Medina in the present. You'll find that the monsters here are a lot more cool to humans, the market sells stuff for the cheapest prices in game (though any weapons are far outclassed), Magus's statue has disappeared, and Ozzie the 8th is being bossed around by an imp. Enjoy a hearty laugh as we move to the next episode!

So, wearing pants on your head makes you confused? Thought it was the other way around.
