Cigars thread

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I normally have one a semester but this semester I’ve had more like three in as many weeks. It is the one thing that makes my mind very still/relaxed and alcohol is complete trash by comparison.

I was trying to start pipe smoking, but it’s a pain in the ass, hard as hell to light and keep lit, doesn’t even give the same feeling.
Cigars really do get you buzzed. As you smoke, it just makes you feel a bit smoother, like you're just flowing a bit. It's why they're associated with conversation, nicotine is a stimulant that acts in the cholinergic system, which is an important contributor to how well you can think in really basic terms.
With cigars, you obviously get a larger dose for a longer period of time. So unlike a quick cigarette, the effects of that extra nicotine build up more and are more pronounced.
And those Leather Roses above are my favorite flavored cigar. They taste like a fancy Mexican chocolate bar, lots of flavors going on that I personally really like. The entire line, called Three Yummy Bitches, are cigars I would highly recommend if you like at least one of them.

Does anybody else have intense spiritual/mystical experiences when smoking cigars?

I bought a tupperdor and a box of cigars from Cigars International, but I realized I had no idea how to set up the humidor (didn't occur to me that it would involve setup at all). I feel like the whole idea that the cigar will be totally ruined if you let it sit in normal air is bullshit. As is it seems I completely overdid the humidifier but the ambient air is humid enough to fall within desired range. But I don't

My cigars are still sitting in their wrappers inside the humidor.

I have a notion that cigars may be much less damaging than cigarettes due to a combination of:
Smoking ritual being something that requires commitment
Regular tobacco (not the nightmare mystery pulp of cigarette tobacco)
Don't inhale smoke (though some still gets in and it still effects the mouth)

That should theoretically make it easy to stick to one every other day, or once a week (basically, don't do it daily) and also not have significant health risks. It looks like the FDA more or less admits that 1-2 a day is not meaningful to cause harm.

What I find remarkable with these things is that I feel very connected to the world and God without feeling like I've lost control of my thoughts or going to deep hurt like alcohol causes. Alcohol would clear everything down to one strand of thought, but it wanders wherever it wants. Feels like looking inwards and getting trapped. Tobacco feels like looking outwards. I think that it's probably in part because the pattern of breathing in and out and watching smoke drift off is kind of meditative.

Still fucks up the throat

I like montecristos. I know it's basic bitch, but white labels, #4s or #2s are my faves. I've tried Cohibas and Acids, but nothing really scratches the itch like a good Monty. Is Olivia V series good for someone who just enjoys a nice chill Christmas party cigar? I don't smoke solo, but at a bar or a party I'm down.

It’s not like shrooms or anything where you expirence otherworldly pleasures but it’s a nice reminder to wind down in our fast pace world. Cigarettes are ok but they were actually designed to be able to smoke faster for your lunch breaks so yeah it’s not as fun.

I actually did try this with one of my stogies and it really does effect it. It changes that smooth rich taste to just being a swisher sweet dry feeling. I was thinking on this though, what if you don’t do the humidifier but you instead boil some water and put a net over the pot (maybe the lid to to keep the moisture condensed) to bring the cigar back to life? I might try that next time.

It’s about humidity. I live in a desert, if I don’t keep mine humidified and stable they get fucked up.
I’d imagine if you live in a climate that’s basically what it takes to keep them nice, it could be fine.

I think the pattern and usage of Cigars is meaningful as well. Most people smoke them around holidays or celebrations. The body has a tendency to ingest a lot of nutrients around this time which has a tendency to help your immune system out. Often cancer cells are smote by your T-cells.

It's also worth noting that while the active ingredient in Cigars and Cigarettes is the same the delivery mechanism to the brain is succinctly different. Cigarettes inject nicotine and other chemicals into the lungs there it is metabolized alongside oxygen providing near direct access to the blood stream through which it flows into your entire body. It's why quitting sucks, and why they are so addictive. Your entire body has adapted to coping with these chemicals and has to be retrained to return to normal. Those carcinogens aren't just in the lungs and brain they are everywhere, hence the increased risk of cancer overall.

By contrast Cigars use the soft tissue in the mouth. The mouth has an insane amount of blood flow in relation to its size specifically in veins in soft tissue which has almost immediate access to the brain due to its proximity. Dissolving tablets like Claritin use this to great effect as does the nicotine in cigars as they penetrate that soft tissue into your blood and thus your brain albeit in a less efficient way then inhalation.

Still smoke about every other day. It makes my throat sore, though. I don't think I'm inhaling, and people claim you can tell when you do, but shouldn't the throat be fine? Could be I smoke it too fast (draw and puff too much) and overheat it, especially near the end when it becomes intoxicating. End-of-cigar smoke feels way more intense and good.

It's better when you take some time off from it too (like with jerking off).

I have a sort of informal playlist of music that has some kind of meaning to me that I listen to while smoking. Usually by the end I've achieved the sense of wonder and free floating thoughts that I go for. But like any drug, it requires set and setting. Requires full attention if you want to really enjoy it, for example. I've considered that breathing meditation may be a more useful use of my time if I could will myself to take it seriously.

I like to think of it as breathing in (almost like making out with) the spirit of the country. Like, it's a New World crop (though these cigars all come from Central America, it's never United States farms), THE New World crop what with how the Indians used it. When you distill something you capture and isolate its spirit (hence why they call distilled beverages spirits) and likewise burning something involves releasing its spirit, such as people doing their cremation rituals. So a person that's smoking is sort of engaging the country around them in a flow, let the released spirit flow in and then flow out in a repetitive pattern, creating a combination of joy/relaxation/acceptance and heightened awareness.

I'd consider trying smoking other things, like maybe mint out of a pipe.

Then sometimes I just smoke and listen to I Glued My Balls to My Butthole Again and giggle.

Booze is complete garbage compared to tobacco

I finally ordered a telescope. I had one as a kid but never used it. I was the kind of smart/academic kid that people would give stuff like that to but wasn't actually into natural sciences in any meaningful way. I'm much more interested in astronomy now, but I've been hesitant about if staring at balls of light is actually going to be worth blowing $200 on. It's not like you can actually see anything.

Well, I reasoned that I basically sit out there and stare at the stars/Moon now anyways (I never really sat on my porch before, mostly because I live in an apartment and I don't like to lock the cat out of where I'm at), and if nothing else I can use the telescope while I smoke.

I've suddenly developed what seems to be dermatitis on my forehead. I have never had a skin outbreak like that in my life.

Is it cigars, or is it from swimming in a chlorinated pool and then waiting all day to take a shower? I feel like it has to be one or the other because those are the only lifestyle changes recently.

That sounds like a swimming pool problem. Pool chlorine used to aggravate my teenage acne.

Cigars kind of disappoint me now (the mystical bullshit I was rambling about only works with the right frame of mind) but I want to smoke them all the time. I don't consciously feel anxious, but I'm going on the job market, which in my profession means putting out over a hundred applications in a month while working on other things.

What's every ones favorite smoke now? I've had a lot of favorites over the years from Punch, Macanudo, A Fuentes, Partagas and an actual Cuban Romeo y Julieta years ago. My go to keep on hand always is AF 8-5-8 Maduros though. I'm sure 4 decades of cigarettes has already dug my hole but I am trying to tap the brakes a bit now before I get dumped in my final resting place.

Glad I found this thread so I can sperg about cigars a bit.

I started buying sticks again after a few years away from them, and I'm leaning into non-Cubans now, as the prices of Cubans have gotten absolutely comical since the last time I looked. Basically the faggots at Habanos S.A decided to raise prices globally to what people were paying in the Chinese market, leading to some brands like Cohiba seeing something like a fourfold price increase - and every other brand getting more expensive too.

When I was buying them regularly, my favourites were Fonseca and Hoyo de Monterrey for lighter strength, Partagas and Ramon Allones for the stronger blends. With today's prices though, and the fact that Cuban quality control has always been like a lucky dip, its just not worth it to me.

What's every ones favorite smoke now?

Gotta be Arturo Fuente Short Story, smoked my first one recently and its one of the best cigars I've ever smoked, hands down. I'm also enjoying the Aladino corojo puros and I've got some Joya de Nicaragua sticks I'm looking forward to sampling.

I like to smoke with coffee, and I still love those Deadwoods Leather Rose cigars because it's just a dessert. Pair that with good black coffee and that is what we call a nice afternoon.
But man, I still have to say outside of the Leather Rose my go-to is the Cuba Libre One 'Brute'. They are really nice and flavorful, and the price is really good. Because of how I smoke, it's both the best 'working in yard' cigar and a really good 'straight chilling' cigar.

I haven't been able to smoke near as much as I would normally want to (which is good) because of a barn swallow nesting right above my door. I don't feel comfortable smoking next to its hatchlings.
The upside is I smoke less and get to regularly step outside and look at the birds.
The downside is that I smoke less and have bird shit everywhere.
