I always thought Quake 1 was more interesting just because it was a more haunting, borderline horror experience. Quake II's got an amazing soundtrack, but its world, enemies, and weapons are nowhere near as engaging, which is ironic given the first game's development suffered from a lack of clear vision. The in name only sequel and a completely and thoroughly average FPS experience.
If you like generic sci-fi shooter that looks vaguely like Doom 3 but less dark, then yeah, sure, it's decent. Nothing groundbreaking though. Is quake 4 any good. Its made by Raven which is a developer I trust (at least before activision gutted it)
I played Quake 4 on xbox 360 back in the day.Is quake 4 any good. Its made by Raven which is a developer I trust (at least before activision gutted it)
I like Raven too so here's my probably opinionated take:Is quake 4 any good. Its made by Raven which is a developer I trust (at least before activision gutted it)
I played Quake 4 on xbox 360 back in the day.
It's mediocre, which was typical of raven software output at the time between 2006-2010 (this was before their attempt at making wolfenstein).
The game has a very slow intro, a lot of the segments are just doom 3 tier corridors and point A to point B tier level design with only 1 or 2 side areas and most of the weapons are capped until you upgrade them via story progression.
the game got interesting at the 1-2 hour mark when you become stroggified but the appeal wears off since all it does is boost your armor and translate strogg language which is for the health refill stations and trivial background shit.
Story is bland and generic but the game itself is either one of those you'll complete once and forget about it, or stop playing and forget about it.
It's not a bad game, but on the 360 I recall it suffering from some horrendous framerate drops at times. Main thing I remember was it had some of the stupidest achievements ever, including one that required you to reach #1 on the global leaderboard.
I mean, that actually sounds like an achievement.
I miss games that had creative and hard to obtain achievements.
I don't really care about Hexen, but I'd totally be down for a Heretic 1 remake.Speaking of Raven, it's a goddamn travesty that Hexen and Heretic are sitting in the FPS dust bin. Yes, I know Amid Evil was similar but it isn't the same.
That's not really Civvie's gimmick, though. Yeah, he occasionally plays extreme trash, but he also shows off a lot of the classics, as well as modern indie retro shooters, that would otherwise be forgotten. And even with the extremely janky shit (like Daikatana) he tries to focus on the more original or interesting parts.I like civvie but i really don't understand the appeal of watching somebody suffer while playing barely working trash that is bad in the most uninteresting ways possible.
After seeing one shitty doom ripoff or an asset flip horror game you pretty much saw them all, but videos about them are really popular for some reason.
Quake 4 has some really nice gunplay, it’s fun. Just get it on PC thoughIs quake 4 any good. Its made by Raven which is a developer I trust (at least before activision gutted it)
Thanks to Civvie I’ve gotten both blood and shadow warrior. I suckmat both though and for some reason in shadow warrior enemies don’t drop weapons only ammo (is it random like in blood?

I'm an early Millennial and I remember having a much easier time with Blood back when I was a teen playing it on the original DOS. Trying to play it today, though? That game is kicking my ass.You Zoomers seem to really struggle with Blood.
Usually the issue with old games and Civvie is like... outdated or crummy design. But they have their own little saving graces. Vargihna Incident doesn't seem to have any redeemable features, though. The best parts of the video were his Alex Jones jokes, the game itself is so bad he couldn't even make fun of it properly. For me the appeal of that episode was that I had never heard of it before and I know more about boomer shooters than is recommended. I would absolutely have played that game in 1998 just to see what's going on, it's a novelty, but I would never do that now. By playing it he provides a valuable service for people like me.
