Speaking of DC, I got my hands on Scooby Apocalypse. The people who have reviewed it make some good points. There is quite a bit of exposition and a lack of the typical Scooby-Doo goofiness (though there is some early on), but this could change in the next issue as they got the main stuff out of the way. Still it's an original take on the series.

Shaggy and Scooby are enjoyable and come off as the best characters. (Shaggy's hipster look grew on me.) Daphne is more aggressive in this story and while I don't blame her for being disgusted with the questionable aspects of the nannites, she doesn't come off as likable as I hoped.

Overall, the first issue has some good stuff and I hope there will be a chance for some of the silliness even if it's a more mature and teen rated story. As for Future Quest, I've been hearing some glowing reviews of it and how loyal it is to the cartoons.

I just got my hands on Preacher yesterday because i was curious form the hype it had gotten,I'm half though it so far and i gotta say it's pretty good so far.I like Jesse and Tulip and Jesse's grandmother's cult and that would arc was pretty cool. Can't wait to see more to do with Genesis and the whole god thing.

Agreed, I picked up vol 1 like two months ago without knowing they were making a show for it and now I'm excited as fuck to see Cassidy run amok.

Me too i can't wait to see the shenanigans he will get in,Also i picked up Punisher Max collection 1 so i can't wait to read what how Ennis wrote Frank.

Ennis' take on Frank was fun, particularly the maxiseries he did before starting a regular one. While Steven Dillion is a good artist, my biggest problem is he can only draw one bland face for his female characters.

I did notice that some of the men face's do look samey sometimes,But i like Punisher Max so far form the few chapters that i did read.

Remember when we were talking about Wacky Raceland and what a potential train wreck it could be? From what one of my friends told me and the free first few pages I've read, it's going to be.

Here's what he told me...

- The whole damned thing probably being some sort of reality show for decadent weirdos on a gated community in geosynchronous orbit.

- Dick Dastardly reimagined as a maudlin type angsting about being the Designated Villain just because he realizes that the rules of the game are kill or be killed and no one else does.

- Private Meekly is a post-op trans woman and damned proud of it.

- The Creepy Coupe looks like it was designed by Black Hand.

- "Blubber Bear" is a brain-damaged burn victim (who is Luke's kid brother) wearing a bear skin and what looks like BDSM gear who only thinks he's a talking bear.

- Red Max is a full-on Nazi.

- The Ant-Hill Mob are mutants with compound eyes, a hive mind and a need to protect their queen (aka Penelope Pitstop). This irritates Penelope no end.

- Penelope is more or less the Engineer from TF2 owing to her personal philosophy being 'use more gun'.

- Peter Perfect is bloody useless and everybody (up to and including the sentient talking robot cars they drive) bloody hates him. Given his idiotic crush on Penny, think of him as Anthony from "For Better or For Worse" with a more powerful car who hates his ass.

- The winner is promised free passage to Utopia (i.e. "Orbit City from the Jetsons meets Elysium") from the Announcer (who needed something to do with his spare time after winning the Corporate Wars and condemning Cogswell to death on the surface world.)

For fuck's sake. I could cotton to Wacky Races in a post-apocalyptic world if it was like the show. It'd be funny.

But this... Oy gevalt!

It could work if you took it in the direction of The Brady Bunch movie where the racers are their normal selves while the rest of the world is a hellhole. The racers just roll with the setting as if its normal and no big deal. That way you can play with the two clashing moods and how they work. Some of the citizens think they're niceness and charm help them get their mind off their misery, others think they're weird and keep their distance while others would just like to kick their asses. Of course Dick would try to impress some major bad guys and end up getting beat up or taken advantage of (think Beavis and Butt-Head's relationship with Todd).

So... much... GRIMDARK

No seriously, who the fuck thought this would be a good idea. As @Steamboat_Bill mentioned, I'd like a post-apocalyptic WR if it were, you know, funny. Just reading the preview though. Yeah, I predict this is probably going to either bomb, or become successful to people only curious to see how bad this is.

I found a free copy of the full comic and my friend is right, it's as much of a car wreck as he said.

  • Peter Perfect is the only one that comes close to acting like his counterpart (though he's a more pathetic version) and has any remotely positive qualities that don't scream "edgy."
  • The rest of the cast might as well be original characters since they act nothing like their former counterparts. I'm fine with black, elderly Pat Pending since he does look like the original version and a more assertive Penelope, but they're just unlikable, violent jerks and replaced their goofiness with being "edgy" and tough.
(Penelope doesn't even have a southern accent.)
  • The characters just love to say the word, bastard. A lot.
Part of me feels embarrassed for this comic (like I did with that Devil May Cry remake) and the other is morbidly curious how much worse it can get.

No kidding, considering that Dick here looks like a steampunk Jack Sparrow:

Wow, this is pretty tryhard. And the art looks gawdawful.

So I read Wacky Raceland, and my only question is "How the hell can these guys fuck up Wacky Races?"

The original material has 'Wacky' in its title. What kinds of drugs were they smoking to make it grimdark?
The premise itself lends well to comedy, and it could have been way more suitable for comics if they had included arcs. (Say, a few races make up a tournament, and one tournament makes one arc. Include interesting and original gags/stories for each arc.)
I do have to admit that I like Muttley's look, though.
