Cooking with Kat (and DSP) thread

Mrs. D$P is making "Japanese style curry" for dinner. Zero dollars to his name, but can afford to make a dish that requires a sizable number of ingredients.

They're not making a curry from scratch. It's a packaged curry of some kind, probably to be mixed with coconut m.ilk and heated, and then you mix in whatever protein and vegetables.

DSP and Kat had Japanese curry tonight.

Valedictorian Phil was unable to have curry in a long time because they could not find the flavor he liked. Every store they went to except the one that sells the curry spice he likes, didn't sell the curry spice he likes. After months of searching, they went to the store where they had bought the curry mix previously. Oddly, the store that sells the curry mix Phil likes sold the curry mix Phil likes. My mind is blown.

For a more romantic date they took the 12 minute drive and Phil had to bite his tongue when Kat drove him past the Emergency room where Leanna almost died and Phil ate a sandwich
But at least Phil's ego would've been able to puff itself back up as Kathy drove past the Wallmart Supercenter and he got to say, '[Goat Laugh] Look that's where poor people shop. Look at all the poor people! [Goat Laugh]"

As suspected, Chicken Pot Pie night follows Tuna Casserole night( Last night's meal). How incredibly boring to eat the same handful of meals week after week. Mrs. D$P appears to exaggerate as well. Apparently, D$P is under the impression that her Pot Pie needs to bake in the oven for 2 HOURS! If she is baking it that long, her crust must be disgustingly soggy as the oven would have to be far to cool to yield a crisp, flaky pie crust. Never baked one longer than 30-40 mins. I looked up pot pie recipes and they all had similar baking temps and times. No way she's baking a pot pie, even a frozen one for 2 freakin' hours.
EDIT: It is a "store bought Pot Pie"...that needs to be baked for 2hrs in the oven...
On a side note: Mrs. D$P makes her Japanese style curry in a crockpot.

The 'Family Size' of the store bought brands of frozen pot pies such as Marie Callender's and Banquet take approximately 1h30m to bake in the oven. Phil likely is adding in the time it takes to pre-heat the oven, and maybe 10 to 15 minutes to let it cool so the molten gravy doesn't melt your face.

Phil only eats completely healthy food like a 1½ lb serving of salty frozen gravy and pie crust now that Kathy lives with him, not like the fresh cooked meals with fruits and vegetables that bitch Leanna was making him that made him so fat and unhealthy! Phil has no 'Guilty pleasure' foods and almost never eats sweets, except for maybe 3 Reese's mini-cups or 2 large muffins right before bed when he's drunk.

Edit: The "half" of one of these Phil says he eats is approximately: 1200 calories, 66g Total Fat (42%DV), 28g Saturated Fat (140%DV), 2,560g Sodium (112%DV), and 110g Carbs (40%DV) with almost no vitamins or minerals.

Tonight's Chicken Cacciatore is a slow cooker recipe consisting of chicken, onions, peppers " a bunch of different herbs and spices like oregano and garlic powder" and a jar of sauce they wanted to try out served over spaghetti.
..." a bunch" equaling two types of dried seasoning out of jars one being Garlic POWDER. Real authentic Italian here using Garlic POWDER. This sounds like the most generic recipe available; no fresh garlic/basil, no wine, no capers. A jar of store bought prepared tomato sauce dumped in a crock pot with some peppers and onions and seasoned with the worst kind of seasonings one can use. Mrs. D$P was really excited to try this fix-it-and-forget-it chicken cacciatore recipe.
On a side note, it was 4 o'clock in the afternoon and D$P was yawing as he was wrapping up his stream with 15 mins left before clock out by answering questions. His new way of doing things: no gameplay Q&A for some end of stream 'contribution' wrangling.

LOL found it: https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/246305/chicken-cacciatore-in-a-slow-cooker/

Recipe called for actual garlic. Apparently getting jarred minced garlic to spoon out is too hard. Not knocking the jarred stuff, since I have bad luck with garlic going bad after just a couple of days, but jesus...at least use real garlic instead of powder.
Here's a tip I've found helpful for bulb garlic: Save an onion/orange bag; the mesh kind. They are usually red at the store I shop at. Put the bulb/s in the mesh bag and hang it off a cabinet door/ a hook under a cabinet. This allows for good air flow around the bulb/s reducing the chance of moisture accumulating. Another thing one can do is to remove all the cloves from the bulb and store them in a jar of olive oil. The upside to this method is that the oil in the jar will absorb some of the essential oils of the garlic cloves and can be used in salad dressings or making garlic and olive oil pasta. I often make a chili oil ( heating the oil* ( olive, canola or any neutral oil) with red pepper flakes) and put the cleaned cloves in a jar of this.
* heat to 180C/356F .

They used a jar of spaghetti sauce from the store instead of a block of Phil's tomato kool-aid fresh from the freezer?

Sounds like someone's getting a little fed-up pretending they enjoy eating a thin tomato-paste gruel served over plain pasta. Luckily Phil's so whipped he pretends it was also his idea and that he's wanted to try this jar of sauce from the store as well.

Only the best storebought sauce for Phil, the Authentic 25% East Coast Italian.

Phil's sauce is too robust for a cacciatore.

Phil was cooking sauce today and had to have the back door open to let the smoke out...
He no longer makes meatballs. Mrs. D$P has changed this to premade chicken sausages, spicy Sicilian chicken sausages were noted today. While it had been stated that Mrs. D$P would be stirring the sauce every 20 mins, it turns out that she was "busy with some stuff". Thus, D$P will be pausing his gameplay every 20 mins to go stir the pot of sauce, seasoning it every other trip for the 4-5* hours this sauce needs to simmer.

*4-5hrs is double the simmering time of the dozen sauce recipes I read from the first page of links generated by a Google search with 2-3hrs being the longest times. Maybe it is the copious amount of water added that require this extra simmering time? Maybe Polish sauce is simmered twice as long as Italian sauce? Nope, turns out the Polish tomato sauce recipes had even shorter simmering times with 30-45 mins being the norm.

EDIT: D$P announced that he cut the 1 cup of sugar down to 1/3 a cup of sugar. This yields "a robust sauce". With the numerous changes he and Mrs. D$P have made to the recipe, I don't think he can in good faith call it "a Family Recipe" any longer.
Dear fucking god, this is chicken sausage? He just plunks whole chicken sausage in there to poach or something now? Tomato Paste gruel poached chicken sausage? Is he simmering the chicken sausage for like 4 to 5 hours in that shit? Is he removing the casings or. . .just what the fuck am I looking at?!? This was Kathy's idea to improve the sauce? If he's not making meatballs then what did he burn in this that he had to open the door to let smoke out? I don't see any browning on the chicken sausages, and there's like 8 whole chicken sausage links visible for just 2 people. I just. . .uhg (:_(
