Creep-Out in Video Games.

The Library Level in Metro 2033 is pretty tense. A lot more on my first playthrough because I pulled a DSP and thought you weren't supposed to look the Librarians (a really powerful enemy) in the face (you can stare them down by doing that, and they'll back off). This led to multiple deaths and one of the most tense gaming moments in recent memory, as I crawled from room to room trying to keep out of sight. Did I mention that the damn things are everywhere? And they move about? And theres holes in the ceiling/floor that they can climb though to pop up in front of you?
Getting to the exit was one of the most satisfying game moments I've had in quite a while.

Try the Kshatriya DLC level in Metro last light when you get a chance. That, made worse with a degree of open world.

You need to kill a few of the fucking things, on very limited ammo.

Been playing Darkest Dungeon, and I had the pleasure of facing this little beauty:

That's ironically not that hard a boss. Very vulnerable to multiple hits and multiple bleeds/blights. Bring a Houndmaster and Plague Doctor and it's possible to do over 40 damage/round through residuals alone. It is, however, fucked-up looking.

The hardest of the bosses, IMHO, is either Vvulf the first time you face him or the concentrated fucking annoyance of the Brigand Pounder. Fucking die already, you sentient piece of field artillery!

Oh yeah, he's definitely not that difficult. First time I encountered him though, he made me feel pretty unsettled. What with his disgusting appearance and him constantly shifting forms, I couldn't help but feel a little intimidated.

The Myst series is full of weird moments but I think special mention goes to the Channelwood Age from the first game. The whole game is empty desolation, but this one is particularly unnerving because if you read the books in the hub world library you know it was once inhabited by tree-people. Then you run into shit like this:

Gave me a heart attack.

That part in Uncharted 1, where the "Spaniard" monsters appear and then don't leave for awhile. Since this was my very first time ever playing a shooter with a controller, I was sweating bullets and desperate every time they appeared.
The whole part after, where you're fighting both regular guys and them at once... intense. Probably the most intense moment I've ever had with a gun in a video game.

This area and slightly after.

On a non-horror game note: When I was younger, I used to play this very family-friendly MMO that's still up and running. Pretty sweet and saccharine game, easy to get into. In the game, there were these dungeons that were separate from the normal enemy-filled streets; only four players could enter at a time to tackle them, and while most were just pretty innocent challenges, there was one particular dungeon that spooked me as a kid -- It was called Sunken City, and it was rather notorious for being both strangely creepy for the game and pretty unforgiving. It was very dark in that area, very barren, and gave off the impression of a town very long-deserted. Naturally, it was filled with undead and ghost enemies. I remember the music being incredibly somber and somewhat ominous, and there was one area in particular that was a lonely park-looking place with a large statue of a grim reaper. This park was right before the final boss of the dungeon. The atmosphere got to me pretty good back then.

Horror games are almost an obsession of mine. I just love 'em. All kinds of horror games. I've got my opinions on what are the scariest, what are the shittiest, etc., but recently I got around to playing Silent Hill 4 again.
It's not the scariest Silent Hill in my opinion, and it's pretty divisive -- it gets a lot of shit for its rather drastic gameplay changes from the rest of the series, for the most part -- but it's definitely the most...surreal.
You've got the entire Hospital level, in which a hallway is comprised of a randomized layout of increasingly strange rooms that range from a single wilted flower sitting alone in a concrete room, to dead things hidden away behind bars, to this particularly infamous event that is accompanied by an ambient track of sexual moaning and sighing.

Throughout the game, you're also frequently hounded by Victim Ghosts, warped spirits that are all that remains of a serial killer's victims. They can admittedly get a bit annoying, what with being entirely unkillable, but sometimes their strange wailing and the distorted static that accompanies them can get a good jolt out of you if you're not expecting it.
Then we've got the lovely individual in my avatar, the main antagonist of the game and mommy-obsessed serial killer extraordinaire. You hear his name quite a bit before ever seeing him, and he's not really introduced with some huge cutscene. The first time you can see him, you just spot him out your window if you choose to look after a certain point in the story. He's just in a room on the other side of the apartment building you're in. Standing. Pointing at the room next door to yours. First time you actually encounter him, he's just sitting on a staircase waiting for you to chat him up like some regular NPC. He talks to you a little, gives you a doll, and then just...sits there. The strange thing about him is just how little ceremony there is to a lot of his appearances; no grand entrances, no real warning, sometimes he'll just show up at random when you're wandering through levels to hunt you down. And then, of course, if you happen to look through your apartment door's peephole to see what's going on outside, sometimes he just does this. When you're nice and immersed in the game's odd atmosphere, this can be a little startling.

Silent Hill 1, 2 and 4 I distinctly remember having unexplained, bizarre things that really didn't pertain to the story, but were non-the-less creepy.

There was the creature in the refrigerator in 1, that if you didn't complete a certain task it would grab Harry and pull him in. You never see what the creature looks like other than a tentacle that grabs his leg and pulls him in.

Two had the prison/asylum area with the disembodied voices in the cells and of course 4 had a ton of shit with the apartment hauntings, the peep hole events, the giant umbilical cord monster seen tunneling throughout the worlds and of course the hospital world.

I liked the Fatal Frame games primarily for the random ghost attacks and events. New events and ghosts would appear in NG+ and different difficulties to keep you on your toes.

Vault 22. The X-22 lab. The Vault 22 camp. Literally anything involving Vault 22 gives me chills. There's something about crawling around a decrepit vault with the former inhabitants watching you from the foliage, or going into the dorms and seeing smaller versions of the mutant plant people.

My real life has been much creepier than any game, I'm just jaded. I did notice a monster dying in "Gems of War" sounded just like a Faye Reagan orgasm and I kinda laughed about the programmers sneaking that under the radar. Creepy in a way.

A few of the psychopaths/bosses in the Dead Rising games give me the creeps, but especially this guy:
albert.png

This is Albert, a psychopath from the third game. He's basically a corrupted surgeon who kidnaps survivors of the zombie outbreak. He harvests their organs and sells them on the black market. Guy takes his harvesting really seriously. You'll notice he's got a lotta jewelry on him, too. The game never really outright states if these come from his victims or got them as a result of his profits, but either way it makes me feel uneasy.

It's okay they have a mod which replaces all the spiders with bears.

It's not a great mod though. The bears don't have animations. They just stand upright and slide across the ground like moving statues. Far creepier honestly.

Can you send me the mod? I really want to get into the game.

As for Forbidden Siren 2; I know people sperge over how 'scary' Siren is, but I honestly think the PS2 game is much more effective. The whole game unsettles me.
I feel you, fam. Even though I've completed the game, it still manages to creep me out from get-go.

One of the initial things that made me incredibly anxious as a new player were these - the Shiryo. These fuckers naturally keep you on your toes when you see them as they are what revive the enemies of the game.. and they can damage you whilst still in their spirit form, too.

latest

The first time I saw the Shiryo, it took me about ten minutes to proceed (you have to enter an area where there are a handful of them). I was absolutely terrified of how they looked and moved and didn't want to be near them whatsoever. Fuck these guys.

Forbidden Siren 2 is great, and if you want to experience a feeling of uneasiness from a game, this is a good way to go about it.

Normally I'm not put off by horror games, but something about FEAR's Alma is just plain unsettling. From the weird freaky shit of her being impregnated by donated sperm from her own father to raping the main character from FEAR 2 just perturbs me.

Like-Likes in Ocarina of Time. To this day, I'm still scared of them.

Also, this actually happens in Super Mario World, but it's one of those split second moments.

TV Tropes said:
Big Boo in Super Mario World has a placeholder sprite for use before the final sprite is loaded. If seen at all, it's likely for a split second. However, it's an empty, soulless emotionless face◊ that for some falls right into the Uncanny Valley.
  • Which technically, just happens to be the same face Big Boo makes when facing it, just without being covered by the sprite's arms.

Haven't actually played the games, but I do remember watching game over clips for one of the Tenchu games. Some of which are pretty damn harsh.

One of them involves the pet tiger of one of the bosses' eating the dog of the main characters. The scary thing was, he didn't kill the dog first. No. He was eating from his stomach as the dog was crying out in agony and pain.:cryblood: Meanwhile the boss himself was having a good chuckle at the whole thing.

There are just some lines that cannot be crossed for me and that was one of them.

I remember as a kid getting really creeped out by the background "music" of the insane asylum map in Redneck Rampage
