The issue is that the condition usually only appears during times when the person is under extreme distress, and/or withdrawing from certain substances like meth. There's another case from Florida (in 2016) of face-eating, where bath salts were suspected, though from what I can tell not proven. This case involves a 19 year old FSU student who seemingly randomly murdered his neighbors and was face-eating when the police arrived. Super weird stuff.
