Creepypasta Discussion Thread

I always felt like us Russians are better at writing creepy shit than Westerners. Most of what you people write stars some fucking high school or college student buying a haunted videogame or some dumb shit. And if it's not that, it's a college student encountering the author's edgy OC do-nut-steel.
Sure, we have some of that too, but I'd say the bulk of our work isn't as... generic? Our stories are bathed in the grit of our country's criminal past, peppered with jargon of our criminal youth, evoking the reality of our corrupt society. What I'm trying to say is - our country kinda sucks, and it's translated into our creepypastas.
And if it's not that, we do come up with some real crazy shit.
Like this one, for instance - it starts out as countryside horror... then it flies off the rails and goes full Neon Genesis Evangelion on you.

I like creepypasta videos because the tonal dissonance between a narrator who’s taking the story incredibly seriously, combined with the inherently cringe and poor writing of the vast majority of creepypastas, makes for an enjoyable experience even with bad stories.

Honestly I have to say despite listening to a large chunk of the catalogue of all the big creepypasta channels, there really are exceptionally few that I actually enjoyed unironically.

It's already been said but the Godzilla NES creepypasta is my shit (except the ending but I think Cosbydef is gonna address that in the sequel if it ever gets finished). I prefer pastas that have accompanying visual media to back up the story and make it a little more believable. But I'm not sad that creepypastas aren't popular anymore - there's only so many spooky vidya game stories you can make before someone like Oney comes along and blasts everyone out of the water with a joke pasta that's ten times better than most of the pasta fandom can produce.

Speaking of video game creepypastas, I'm surprised nobody ever made a Doom creepypasta aside from the "And then John was a zombie" trollfic that got circulated on the chans back in the early days

Given the urban legends surrounding the infamous "Harris Levels" and how the game was blamed for Columbine back in 1999, you'd think we'd see more creepypastas about cursed Doom mods?

I suspect that there's at least some overlap with the creepypasta and "True Crime" fandoms on places like Tumblr, so I'm honestly surprised we haven't seen more Doom creepypastas.

I do recall someone making a creepypasta where some generic dude finds a hidden level in SH4 that's a mod of Doom but instead of it being Doom the guy plays through a reenactment of the Columbine Shooting. But that's about it. I'm not even sure the pasta is still up on the web, it was a really long time ago.

I like the old creepy pastas, because they had something to it. The feeling, that it could be possible, gave it a good creepy vibe. For example "The devil's game"

Starts as a ritual pasta with lots of background and explaining, what makes it better than the typical ritual pasta. TBH the end is ruined by the last couple of sentences, but this is just a minor issue.

Next one is "Normal porn for normal people" which could be real. There is fucked up shit so why not something like this.

"Candle cove" was a story to read and played the Mandela Effect very well, but that's it.

Still a good horror story but not a creepy pasta: Psychosis. The author knew what he did and wrote a good story.

Probably cause most Vidya creepypasta play off twisting something bright, childlike and innocent like Pokemon, Mario, sonic etc into something dark and gory. A lot like the lost episode creepypastas like Squidward's Suicide.

Those things were, are, and always will be more funny than scary. There's tonal shift, there's tonal whiplash, and then there's Sonic The Hedgehog with black and red eyes setting everything on fire in an orgy of tryhard violence.

The entire thread appears to have gone without a single mention of Guts by Chuck Palahniuk. Shameful!

Not sure if that link will hold together forever; Chuck used to have the full text on his website but it appears to have vanished after a redesign. Still, I treasure Guts as the original creepypasta.

Xorax was another vidya creepypasta that was good and it didn't involve haunted video games that you get from a dead friend, creepy old man or ebay.

Someone did make a doom Creepypasta a long time ago. Doom: Lost Wad

Creepypastas have always held a special place in my heart, sure some are pretty shitty but there are some gems out there.

Your shitty Doom story reminded me of a similar story that was actually pretty interesting found here about old Half-Life maps. It's parts nostalgic, parts bizarre.

It's good but you can instantly tell it's written by a goon.

The first wierd thing is that a group of teenagers in the early 2000's are legit horrified by a corpse easter egg in a video game instead of going "lol wtf" then the author explains how they were ahead of the curve and conveniently all acted like killjoy goons circa date of writing.

The second "wierd but lol too true" was one of the group picking up WoW and becoming a tranny and the author talking about pronouns. Then the author begins talking about WoW raid bosses and it begins to dawn on me that the author may be a troon because this is a creepypasta with the exact sort of half life mapping autistic details that only a turbosperg would be aware of. (Although all the chat related stuff would have had to have been a server mod and not a BSP iirc)

E: Also apparently it's all stolen from action half-life too. User "Hondo"'s maps specifically but lots of them had weird secrets.

Despite your very correct complaints, I still think it's interesting. This particular story was based on a map by Hondo called 5 a.m. which might hold some of the strangest shit in any game I've ever seen. That map that makes you go colorblind for instance? That's a real thing.

I remember a really shitty Pokemon creepypasta where some kid gets a cartridge of I think Pokémon yellow and by the end of the story pikachu comes to life and kills his friend. Our dear protagonist goes over to his friends house to check on him and whadya know, he finds his dead body.

Pikachu then says from the gameboy “you’re next” or some dumb shit. This is just what I remember and I can’t find the story again, but damn that freaked me out as a kid.

Sounds really familiar. I almost think SoG or Yuriofwind did an episode about it.
I still think about the zombie Pokemon creepypasta YoW read and the terrible "battle scenes" in it. "ZOMBIE used BITE" lives rent-free in my head.

The Dogscape series is a personal favorite, and I've also enjoyed the Runners series- hell, most of Max Lobdell's work is pretty good. I've watched the rise and fall of creepypasta. Though the medium never dies, it only changes. Now we have r/nosleep larps instead of teenage murderers. I've been tempted a few times to write my own short horror stories, but I often find myself to busy or distracted by other shit. I've also considered dipping a toe into the narration sphere, granted most of the people who do seem to ends up as nonces and sex pests- as have a few of the larger writers.

My favorite creepypasta is Psychosis, but other ones I like are the Rake, Penpal, Ben Drowned, NoEnd House, Anansi's Goatman Story, the Showers, Kagekao, Tales from the Gas Station, the Cell Phone Game, Uncle Gerry's Family Fun Zone, 1999, Candle Cove, My Dead Girlfriend Keeps Messaging Me on Facebook, the Russian Sleep Experiment, Mayhem Mountain, Bedtime, the Puppeteer, Tulpa, the Quiet Sky, Smile.jpg, Mr. Widemouth, NES Godzilla Creepypasta, Hanging Man Hill and the absolute scariest creepypasta ever written.

These aren't the only creepypastas I like of course, these are just the first ones to come to mind. If I listed all the stories I like we'd be here all fucking day.
