The Discord is almost entirely teenagers trying to get in on “free” NFTs (read: still going to have to pay gas fees) by hijacking twitter replies to shill a scam. I was skeptical as to whether they were actually even trying to do something physical. On the 22nd of December some planning permission approval was celebrated by the owners as a proof of progress:

Today we celebrate that we got the hard copies of the “Approval in principle” after 4 months waiting. This is the most important permit we need. We knew it was being approved, but we can not be sure of anything until we have the proof of it. We must say that the Fiji authorities have been very good helping us getting this done.

You will see there it says that its granted with some conditions, thats normal, its always like this with all projects, basically says that if we want this and that we need some other permits etc, but we already know that, this approval is basically the main one, the others are pretty much guaranteed in one way or another.

According to them, they have a purchase agreement with the current, allegedly British owners of the island. Their plan to “just find another island” is amusing when they’ve already made a bunch of diagrams in their masterplan that are dead set on getting Nananu-i-cake and received tentative planning permission for a resort there.



$90m to terraform + develop 60 mansions + marina + an entire resort + supporting infrastructure for basic utilities such as power, water and waste management let alone fucking fiber-to-the-island is

That being said, a far more pressing issue for the island in terms of blockchain activities - specifically mining - would be power generation, but this has already been covered off ITT (i.e. it's either hopeless or hopelessly expensive).

After doing that, I was able to scan it and get the value "@ELTOROIT". Assuming that's a Twitter handle, then I guess it's this guy who doesn't seem to have anything to do with crypto or this island at first glance.

So I'm assuming this is just a way to build up hype to sell NFTs and/or secure angel investors, then quietly disappear into the shadows. The whole thing comes off as a person who barely understands crypto trying to use the popularity of crypto to score a low-effort paycheck.

I was pondering for days how to bring Cryptoland to the attention of my fellow Kiwis and am glad someone did it for me. This should leave proving grounds post-haste, as it is something that really needs to be seen to be believed.

For the record I hope they do buy the island. There is no way they can get power, internet, laundry, water, food, and waste management up and running. It’ll just end up a bunch of half-built mansions that the Fiji government will be forced to tear down.
