Cuphead - starring 30s visuals and 3 hours of jazz

I'm going to need context for that. And why does it have to be Nocturne?

Just something I found on the Megaten Reddit.

There's one for SMT4 as well.

Welp, looks like I can't complete the game.

The game really bugs out for some reason towards the end.

During the King Dice fight, the monkey boss went off screen and I guess fell off the world and died. King Dice himself ended up locking up in his attack animation and wasn't able to send any cards, leading to a free win.

And now I can't get past the first phase with the Devil. My bro and I were fighting him, and when I jumped into the hole he went in, the game wouldn't continue. We were just staring at the Devil's skin suit on his throne between two walls of fire. And this has happened EVERY time we got to that point. We can't seem to move on.

Really disappointing. I hope a patch comes soon and fixes these problems.

I heard there was a trick for the first phase where if you manage to just barely stand out of harms reach of the flames and fire the charge shot upwards from the left, you can easily kill him and bypass the soft lock.

Did you try restarting the game?

I completed the game in co-op yesterday and the same thing happened to us, but only if one of us was dead. Were both of you alive and went into the hole?

No, he kept dying before hand.

From what I can find, this seems to happen if you're playing on co-op and if one of the players is dead.

I told him this and he's fine with sitting out for the fight, so I'll probably try again myself later today.

The same bug was happening to me and my brother but only only when he was dead, i would jump down the whole but the screen stays stuck. Tell your brother to equip the +2HP charm and make sure to parry/resurrect him when you can, you two should go to the second phase.

I don't know if it's true but i heard you can crouch under the Devil's goat palm attack and that his snake neck attack leaves 2 open spots you can crouch too, it should be much easier to dodge them like this.

the game is challenging but it's so addictive. anyone who says a game is bad because it's 'too hard' needs to suck it up or find another game to play.

i think the visuals are creative and amazing, by the way. is it true that all the animations were hand drawn? if so, that's pretty damn neat.

Yes, they are.

This game got me excited about retro action, I just got Mega Man Legacy collection 2 last night. Bought it in a long ass train ride, and it was happily waiting for me at home.

Finally beat the game.

I re-matched King Dice and beat him fairly this time and after dozens of tries, I finally beat the Devil. After that, I decided to check out what happens when you do give him the contracts.

Got a good chuckle out of that.

Anyway, despite some major frustrations and having to deal with annoying bugs, I really enjoyed this game. It's tough, but mostly fair. And the animation is sublime. I would love to see a making of video of this game. This game is almost EXACTLY like watching a classic cartoon from the mid 1900's. Not just in visuals but in sound design and the voice overs.

Props to the people who made this. Emulating such a style to this degree must not have been easy.

Yes. The scum and vermin who have been impotently whining that vidya should be art are trashing an actual piece of hand-drawn art because they, themselves, are too illiterate in games, too incompetent at what their job is, that they want it dumbed down for them.

You know how a certain kind of person praise modern art(admittedly I don't get modern art) when it looks like someone hired an animal to walk over the painting?
And they trash classical art that has knowledge of anatomy and tries to somewhat paint people or places of the past with accuracy? Or at the very least, it's somewhat clear to the naked eye what exactly the artist tried to envision, be it classical Rome or the middle-ages, or even a portrait of a historical figure. Stuff that isn't deep apparently.

Well it's kinda like that. They trash this game because it's not their kind of art, they don't want something that both plays and looks good. They want some 2deep4u walking simulator type they can brag to each-other about how deep it is.

They've taken; "games are art" to such a level that gameplay is a hindrance to them and not a good thing.

Will it be possible for the Cuphead fandom to hit Rick and Morty/Steven Universe fandom levels of shit or will it just be drops in the bucket at best?

Not sure about that due the former two being story and character driven while the story in Cuphead is mostly there to serve as context for the gameplay rather than be the driving force.

Also, lack of lesbianism. Hell, one of the female bosses gets married to a DIRTY WHITE MALE.

But hey, autism finds a way.

I don't mind those drops being saved and put back into the inkwell until the time is right for something else!

Posers, that's all they are!

Some probably are, but a more sad suspicion I have is that some of them actually have good intentions. They want games to be accepted and in their quest in doing so they seek to turn games into movies, or just a painting. eliminating what makes games well games. Instead of accepting that people will start to accept games for what they are eventually, like they did with movies, they turn games into movies so the movie snobs will like games. It's silly and shortsighted but I do think some of them actually want that.

To contrast this with the past; Imagine when movies were new, and critics of the movies didn't count it as an artistic expression and just counted it as trash. Imagine a bunch of critics, that criticized movies for being itself and not just being text on the screen you read. It's sort of like that.

I don't think any of what they are doing will work however, as cuphead is a success, along with a hat in time, etc. The money will decide if games stay games or if they're turning into movies. And the current trend seems to be gamers want games and people who want to watch movies buy well directed hollywood movies.

I feel that way as well.

Of course as a kid, I liked the idea of games resembling cartoons the way the visual language was conveyed in those classic titles. I don't like the idea of it being this uber-realistic thing that hits home a bit for some of us.

So really, catering to those groups than try to go for the whole.

Yeah, in the past these critics would've wanted to cut out the movie part of movies and just keep the text in. Turning a movie into a bad book.
Just like now, these critics want to cut out the game play part and keep the cutscenes in. turning the game into a bad movie.
