People like Dan feel they must "fight fire with fire" because "the other side" does. They probably know deep down they're assholes, but they can't admit it to themselves or others because doing so would invalidate their whole movement. They would be just as bad as the people they fight. So they justify their actions by saying they're doing it in the name of Progress and the oppressed.
I get the feeling he's that guy that gets pulled into a group of friends because (initially) you feel sorry for him, and by the time you realize what a despicable shitheel he is you can't figure out a way to cut him loose.

Who is SF?For those that don't know, there was a secret anti-Gamergate chat group assembled sometime after Gamergate happened in August 2014, it was on IRC chats, Google Hangouts, and Skype before moving to slack/Discord/whatever as time progressed and their paranoia prompted them to try and find a more secure service. In early 2015, many members of this group transitioned into the volunteers for Zoe Quinn's scam Crash Override Network, and after that died in early 2016 some of the former members of CON and this chat group began speaking out about it. One of them even leaked logs from when the group was using Skype dating from late December 2014 and early January 2015.
Dan Olson was revealed as a member of this group, which also included Chelsea Van Valkenburg/Zoe Quinn herself, Jake Alley aka secretgamergirl, self-declared pedophile Nicholas 'sarah butts' Nyberg, and some other fucked up people. The group, Dan included, actually bent over backwards to cover up for Nyberg after his history of pedophilia was uncovered. For instance, the group was using a Trello to organize themselves and paint targets for them to collectively go after, including 8chan, various people who had been supporting Gamergate (some were even targeted for tweeting at a member of the group just one time), and Encyclopedia Dramatica. In a Trello entry from February 2nd, 2015 you can see they were still going after ED for daring to have made an article about Nyberg months before (the group also filed online police reports against someone for tweeting a link to the article).

The following excerpt from the leaked Skype chat shows the group had been targeting 8chan since at least early September 2014, because Gamergate was using the image board after 4chan decided users weren't allowed to talk about it there.

On December 23rd, 2014, we can see they made an "incident" entry on the Trello involving Dan Olson's Medium blog where he had downloaded what he himself claimed to be child pornography in an attempt to attack 8chan. You would think if Olson and the rest of the group actually cared about potential child victims of pedophiles that they would be discussing ways to signal boost to anti-sex trafficking groups or donate to victim support groups, but no, this was just about Gamergate.

I don't think anyone has ever specifically looked for Dan's activity in the Skype logs, so we're going to take a look. Note that the logs are I believe 13 hours ahead of EST time zone and seem to be 15 ahead of Dan's location, and "drinternetphd" is Zoe Quinn. I will also be pruning the copy-pasted logs a bit to remove lines that are unrelated to Dan, and including the archive link to the log so you can see the full thing if you wish. I believe every single chat archive from the leak contains some activity from Dan (even on Christmas), I won't be including every single comment from him as a lot is dull like him talking about his sewing machine or random video games.
This first batch looks to be from December 22nd, 2014 and we can find Dan celebrating! that he had finished the Medium post. He mentions being able to close his tabs and specifically mentions /hebe/, the board that he used as evidence in the blog post and the board which is tied to Wesley "Laurelai" Bailey as the board owner linked to a site hosted on Laurelai's server alongside his other sites such as SJWiki. Disturbingly, we see Olson thank "Ms. Butts" aka pedophile Nick Nyberg for tweeting out the Medium article, and based off this and later log entries they seem to be quite friendly with each other. (At this point I don't think anyone knew what Nyberg really was, not that it changed anything for Dan and the others when the sick truth came out) http://archive.is/G2531

For those that don't know, there was a secret anti-Gamergate chat group assembled sometime after Gamergate happened in August 2014, it was on IRC chats, Google Hangouts, and Skype before moving to slack/Discord/whatever as time progressed and their paranoia prompted them to try and find a more secure service. In early 2015, many members of this group transitioned into the volunteers for Zoe Quinn's scam Crash Override Network, and after that died in early 2016 some of the former members of CON and this chat group began speaking out about it. One of them even leaked logs from when the group was using Skype dating from late December 2014 and early January 2015.
Dan Olson was revealed as a member of this group, which also included Chelsea Van Valkenburg/Zoe Quinn herself, Jake Alley aka secretgamergirl, self-declared pedophile Nicholas 'sarah butts' Nyberg, and some other fucked up people. The group, Dan included, actually bent over backwards to cover up for Nyberg after his history of pedophilia was uncovered. For instance, the group was using a Trello to organize themselves and paint targets for them to collectively go after, including 8chan, various people who had been supporting Gamergate (some were even targeted for tweeting at a member of the group just one time), and Encyclopedia Dramatica. In a Trello entry from February 2nd, 2015 you can see they were still going after ED for daring to have made an article about Nyberg months before (the group also filed online police reports against someone for tweeting a link to the article).

The following excerpt from the leaked Skype chat shows the group had been targeting 8chan since at least early September 2014, because Gamergate was using the image board after 4chan decided users weren't allowed to talk about it there.

You would think if Olson and the rest of the group actually cared about potential child victims of pedophiles that they would be discussing ways to signal boost to anti-sex trafficking groups or donate to victim support groups, but no, this was just about Gamergate.

I don't think anyone has ever specifically looked for Dan's activity in the Skype logs, so we're going to take a look. Note that the logs are I believe 13 hours ahead of EST time zone and seem to be 15 ahead of Dan's location, and "drinternetphd" is Zoe Quinn. I will also be pruning the copy-pasted logs a bit to remove lines that are unrelated to Dan, and including the archive link to the log so you can see the full thing if you wish. I believe every single chat archive from the leak contains some activity from Dan (even on Christmas), I won't be including every single comment from him as a lot is dull like him talking about his sewing machine or random video games.
This first batch looks to be from December 22nd, 2014 and we can find Dan celebrating! that he had finished the Medium post. He mentions being able to close his tabs and specifically mentions /hebe/, the board that he used as evidence in the blog post and the board which is tied to Wesley "Laurelai" Bailey as the board owner linked to a site hosted on Laurelai's server alongside his other sites such as SJWiki. Disturbingly, we see Olson thank "Ms. Butts" aka pedophile Nick Nyberg for tweeting out the Medium article, and based off this and later log entries they seem to be quite friendly with each other. (At this point I don't think anyone knew what Nyberg really was, not that it changed anything for Dan and the others when the sick truth came out) http://archive.is/G2531

According to Dan, this attack should have been the "'perfect' chance" for Gamergate to "distance itself" and "feign concern" (because, after months of dehumanizing them, "GG" is now just a hivemind for him) and he doesn't understand why people were reacting as if it was an attack on them, while he is sitting in two invite-only chat rooms with Zoe Quinn.

I cuddled with Laura, had a good cry at an outpouring of support, and I'm doing pretty good now.
