The investigation continues and as the Kiwi Farms' forces try to find a way deeper into the estate, we monitor the infections of our party:
@vertexwindi, @Collections Agent, @Darwin Watterson, and @Curt Sibling have continued adventures under the watchful eyes of @Shuu Iwamine, who has mandated that she needs in-the-field data on the infection.
Thus far, Shuu has worked out a cure involving sodium pentathol, pancuronium bromide, and potassium chloride, but at the doses required, it would basically kill any normal person, and thus finding Patient Zero is our only recourse.
Normally, the infection has a number of "stages." In its passive state, the user becomes faster (+1 spd) but their resistances go down slightly, as do their virtue chances.
After a time in "passive" form, the virus takes on its aggressive "craving" state, where the subject develops a biological compunction to consume The Blood. They become violent (chance to attack allies) and demand their drug du jour immediately. Penalties are doubled, but if the subject is fed The Blood at this point, they engage a unique form of this illness. Speed increases are also increased.
Finally in "wasting" form, they will become violently unpredictable and begin to suffer deteriorating health. Penalties and speed boost are tripled. If the subject is not fed The Blood after this phase, they will die, something the game made clear very early. A trinket can prevent death (a dead rat) - good thing, too - the subject must feed, and not taking them along won't stop their condition, which can get worse while in town. They may attack others, spread the infection unwillingly, or die themselves from lack of feeding.
Fortunately, feeding the subject the blood at either the craving phase throws whoever into a violent fit (the Bloodlust phase) that is arguably an upgrade, skyrocketing their offense and resistances like they just sucked down a holy water and lasting until the rage burns off and they return to passive. Wasting phase users simply return to passive.
One unifying feature of the disease is that Holy Water becomes toxic. It will seriously harm anyone bearing the curse who imbibes it. If you should give The Blood to a subject already in Blood Lust mode, they will take a ton of damage (50% of their HP on average), but their bonuses crank even higher. This infection is bizarre.
Unfortunately, the infection vectors have spread - to the point where our forces are running into them all over the place.
During a medicine run, @Randall Fragg, @NotAKitty, @Varg Did Nothing Wrong, and @Techpriest run into wave upon wave of supplicants, who eventually succeed at infecting Fragg. Fragg's response was that The Blood "wasn't as fun as booze; he's all dizzy and nauseous, certainly, but it lacks the inflated sense of self-esteem."
Infecting Fragg was a mistake that cost the lives of not only his infector, but everyone they came with.
Unfortunately, apparently the Hamlet's ongoing infestation of bloodflies and gibbering blood-drinking monsters infecting everyone not nailed down has resulted in this motherfucker showing up:
This maniac is the Fanatic - a church soldier, driven out by the inquisitorial forces for his madness. He seeks to purge the infection any way he can, and he doesn't care if he has to burn down a country to do it. For the moment, the group plays nice as the maniac hangs out in the square, with Curt's team locking themselves in the Sanitarium and @Burned Man trying to distract him long enough for the other infected party members out of sight.
The Hamlet just got a little shittier. Look at him there, screaming about Vampires.
Speaking of the Hamlet, however.
Districts are a new thing. You earn blueprints as you go, which allows you to unlock new buildings that give passive benefits. So far, I've unlocked three of these (note their insane high cost) - I'll show you which ones below:
With a weekly source of The Blood giving us a stockpile of 2 a week, we're in less danger of someone dying from starvation. Randall states he will content himself with Rats.
The infection follows us everywhere, however, and Bloodsucker is rapidly becoming the most common enemy type....
