Came across this video essay on Darkest Dungeon 2.
>Flagellant, the outright best self-sustaining hero with heals out the ass, with a unique status effect that lets him solo even the Act 5 boss (Death balances flagellant btw)
>C tier
Its genuinely hard to take even half the video's critique since its stems from genuine skill issue that he refuses to admit or he's using footage from outdated builds of the game.
That last part has been the bane of Darkest Dungeon II's existence, speaking as someone who's stuck to the game since the first month of early access (October 2021), It's spent the majority of its lifetime fixing problems that it had backlogged since day 1.
Dogshit relationship system that repeatedly stops combat and can even deny heals and buffs to specific party members? Reworked in December 2022
Dogshit Stagecoach travel that was barely interactable and slow as shit? Alleviated with the March 2023 build, an actual faster stagecoach toggle was added
this summer with the first Steward's update
Combat system that heavily favored the enemy side due to various factors including bloated stat buffs, modifiers, and poor crowd control options at the players disposal? also fixed with the stewards update.
Poorly thought out path system that were just stat buffs/debuffs? (which is probably why he only listed Plague Doctor and Man-at-Arms as the best characters, they had a path that was just more damage) Each hero before vestal's release were given thorough reworks to their paths overtime (Leper and Hellion are currently undergoing reworks as of this post)
Dislike the entire concept of Confessions and having to play with only one team for the entire campaign? Kingdoms exists.
Even so, there are still problems built in to the game that persist to this day; the barely readable mobile-tier UI, grinding the altar of hope in-between confession runs being a total slog, loosing relationship pips because someone got pissy for not getting healed despite being nowhere near the heal threshold, the non-existent tutorial. I feel ShuffleFM's critique video on DDII gives a more thorough approach to the games flaws in half the time than the mic eating autist.
Given that Red Hook is already working on a new project with Unreal Engine (lol), we're probably reaching the end of support soon meaning all the games problems will resort to 'mods will fix it' at this point in time.
Like why the fuck do you restrict healing so much? Why nerf stuns to being pointless? Why not tell the player about basic game systems? Why have just about every system be as antagonistic as possible without a way to be balanced by reward?
Healing thresholds are all over the place i can give you that, some have no requisite, others like vestal's Divine Grace require you to be below 33% HP which is dangerously low for several squishy characters, either make it a universal <50% threshold or don't bother with the concept.
