I don't want to work out competitively; I just want to be healthy. Besides, my girlfriend is actually a little bit intimidated by really really big muscles; she prefers me to keep them medium-sized, like the TNA wrestler AJ Styles (upon showing her various pictures of male celebrities, to see what body she wanted me to have, she had the best reaction to AJ's picture).
Given those two goals, would the following workout schedule be sufficient, provided that I did ten reps per set, three sets per day, three days per week?
I'd start off with a pair of really big dumbbells, and do ten dumbbell bench presses. I prefer dumbbells because I won't need anyone to lift the weight off of me if I drop it on myself; I'll just roll them off, on either side.
When I'm done with the bench presses, I'll sit up, and pick up a pair of smaller dumbbells, and do some military presses for my shoulders and triceps (triceps are also worked in the bench press, so I won't bother giving them any primary focus, for the sake of saving time; two secondary focuses is enough), followed immediately by some hammer curls for my biceps and forearms.
Then, I'll hold the smaller dumbbells at shoulder height, stand up, and do some squats, for my legs, glutes, and lower back. I think the smaller dumbbells are enough, because I'm also squatting my own body weight.
After squatting, from a standing position, I'll bend over, 90 degrees, and do some dumbbell rows, for my upper back.
I'll finish up the round by putting down one the smaller dumbbells, taking the other small dumbbell, laying back down on the bench, placing the dumbbell against my chin and chest, and doing some resisted crunches, and that's the end of my round. I'll finish the round the way I started: Laying on the bench, ready at a moment's notice to bench press the heavier dumbbells.
Do that three times. The dumbbells will be sitting right next to the bench, so they'll be ready on the fly, which, as I understand it, is essential to keeping your heart rate up, which, in turn, is essential to getting results.
If all I want is to stay fit and appease my picky girlfriend, is that enough? I think I could get that done in the "20 minutes a day, three days a week" that those infomercial machines brag about so much, except I wouldn't have to spend two thousand dollars on a machine; just $399 on a bench, $150 on a pair of heavy dumbbells, and $80 on a pair of smaller dumbbells.
Thoughts?
