CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - The family of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student David Hogg was "swatted" Tuesday morning, causing police to respond to their Parkland home.

A call came into the Broward Sheriff's Office claiming a hostage situation at the home in the 7800 block of Northwest 122nd Way.

Coral Springs Fire Rescue arrived at the scene to find there was no hostage situation and the call was a prank.

Hogg was not home at the time of the incident and is currently in Washington, DC with his mother to accept the RFK Human Rights award.

Sky 10 was over the home as units were staged outside as a precaution. BSO responded with multiple crews and a police helicopter.

Swatting is the action of making a prank emergency call to bring about a response of armed law enforcement officers.

Since the shootings at Stoneman Douglas, Hogg has been a prominent advocate for gun safety. However, Hogg has been a lightning rod for controversy as some do not approve of his methods, such as holding a "die in" at a Coral Springs Publix last week.

As far as I know, all 911 calls must be responded to.

The place I worked some time ago would constantly deal with "ghost 911 calls." Essentially, glitches in the 911 system would make it to where dispatch would receive a 911 call from a random address with no one on the other line and cause an immediate hang up.

No matter what, even though we know they're not actual 911 calls, we'd have to go respond because if you didn't respond that one time when something happened, you're fucked.
Ah, I thought it fell under the Supreme Court decision that Police are not obligated to protect every single individual but society at large. I figure they would respond because they wouldn't want that one time it's not a boy crying wolf to be a real problem like someone being all stabbery or rapey.

He did ask for a meme war.

It doesn't get more meme these days then "lol I swatted you".

While I feel that swatting should carry a harsh punishment due to its dangerous nature and the waste of money and manpower, David Hogg is just so damn unlikable that it was hard for me not to laugh. I feel bad since someone could have been killed.

I'm surprised no terrorist has gotten the idea to call in a swat team to divert police attention yet.

I'm going to add this. I should've mentioned it in my remarks about Hoggy before, and I didn't. :autism:

I hate swatting. I view it as attempted assault with a deadly weapon. The fact that the weapon is an amped-up police team is irrelevant. So yeah, regardless of how dickless Dave makes my fingers twitch, swatting is absolutely wrong.

That being said, the idea of him swatting himself... I can't discount the possibility. There have been a number of faux 'hate crimes' where it was discovered the 'victim' spun the whole thing up for various reasons.
Him not being there for it is suspicious. Anybody who did even two minutes of checking should have been able to figure out that he wasn't going to be home that day.

Swatters are the prankster version of the jagoffs who think it's appropriate to call 911 when McDonalds gets their order wrong.

Going to have to disagree with this part of your assessment.

It only looks like obsession because compared to the rest of the world, America is unique in that it's a large, wealthy, industrialized country where citizen firearm ownership is largely unregulated and people have the money to indulge in it.

There's a billboard I pass on my way to work every day with a ten-foot tall pistol on it, because it's advertising for a local gun shop. A cynic or moral-panicker would say it's proof we're obsessed with guns and aren't as "civilized" as, insert-random-other-country here.... well, they don't HAVE gun shops in those countries, so you don't see ads for them, because they don't exist. Oh, and a couple of the "bullet points" on that same billboard advertise the same shop offers gun safety classes, instruction and gun safes... it's not like it says "Get your gun and start blastin' punks today!" I've had more fellow Americans try and dress me down for the existence of that sign than the actual European exchange students we hosted who saw it, and didn't even blink.

Firearms are a hobby and a privilege here, and to anyone who comes from a place where such is restricted, normal hobbyist devotion, no more rabid than you see among model train or Star Wars film enthusiasts, can easily be spun to look like some kind of moral savagery. Or how the NRA opposing regulation is any different than wanting to fight the government trying to regulate your hobby for the "good" of everyone. Same way car hobbyists like me don't care for the government stepping in and telling us where and when we can drive our cars and what mods we can and can't do to them in the name of lowering pollution and making everyone "safer".

I probably should've been more clear. I'm not talking about the people who like shooting or owning guns as a hobby. I have plenty of gun owners and hunters in my family, so I don't consider just owning guns as "OMG, GUNS ARE BAAAAD!!!!" I hate that crap. The majority of gun owners are normal, sane individuals.

What IS disturbing to me are these asshats who go around and immediately think that guns are the answer to everything. School shootings? Arm the teachers! If there was a major shooting in a public place? Why, if someone had been there who was armed, they could've taken the guy out! The Holocaust only happened because the Jews didn't have guns! These people are fucking stupid. Most of them are the types you wouldn't trust with safety scissors. But in the past few years it seems, they're the ones with the loudest voices.

(As for the NRA, they support the gun sellers today. It's about money, plain and simple)

I think they also get a disproportionate amount of attention because the anti-side thinks they can spin that into being the face of a "Typical gun owner" , but nobody's falling for that since, well, so many people own guns, and are reasonable, they can see it for the fear mongering it is. It really only influences people who dont' own guns and likely never would have anyway.

Well those people follow the simple logic of deterrance, why risk yourself to shoot up a school when most of the people there are armed or why risk stealing from the guy that makes ghenkis khan look like a novice weapons collector
Would the sistem work 100% of the time, no
Would some people with a death wish wont give a damn and carry their attack, absolutelty
But unless people start taking mental health seriously, deterrence is one of the solutions that could work

People may hate swatting but the police do need training!

In back the old country we had police respoding to suicide threats by handing him a knife "Just don't bleed on me." and lo the guy was cured.

Police violence can solve things even without violence!

Anyway this is funny because he should be totally fine with it.

We laugh, but have you ever read about Sir Robert Peel? He was the English guy who developed what amounts to the modern idea of the police force. His 'Nine Principles of Policing' are a very different animal from what we see nowadays.

Yeah, all good ideas. I just fear that he didn't have anything like the modern drug cartels to deal with in his time. Policing was easier against highwaymen, however detectives had it worse. No DNA analysis back then!

I was about to say "Why does he look like he hates his life?" but then I remembered that video was within hours of his classmates being killed, which is an important thing to keep in mind during all of this.

Yes, he looks much happier and well-content in other pictures.
