The governments and power-brokers of the world are filled with criminals. They're fine with Superman saving busses filled with schoolkids or foiling bank robbers. The moment Superman starts looking at them though, is the moment they start pulling out all the stops to bring him down. I think that's one reason Superman in Universe tries to be such a paragon and inspiration to people to do the right thing. Because he can't oppose evil leaders directly without it turning into a Him vs. Society / Humanity thing (or it being turned into that by his opponents). But he can represent an ideal that helps inspire the only people who can bring them down.Lex is fairly similar to Joker, but to a much worse degree. Lex is the man who practically owns Metropolis and has connections to numerous world governments as both an arms dealer and political figure. Hell, the man has taken up the role of president in numerous iterations. Killing Lex would likely mean war with the world governments, something the Justice League cartoon went into. By that point, the JL will be forced into being dictators or being hunted.
Maybe that's why his alter ego is a reporter. Superman fights the obvious threats, Clark Kent fights the more subtle ones.
Heh - this has just reminded me of that great comment someone made: "I want to see a Superman movie where the CIA try to kill Clark Kent. Not because they know he's Superman, but just because he's a really, really good reporter. Make it a comedy where they keep failing to kill him and can't work out why."
That cracks me up. They should do this and title it: "Clark Kent vs. The Elite".
Greatest respect and I agree with every point you made. But "penchant".Joker's pension to be a monkey wrench is actually fairly valuable to Batman.
