"World of Cardboard."
Everybody always focuses on that speech and the couple of hits he lands on Darkseid, but forgets that it is IMMEDIATELY followed up by Darkseid easily immoblizing him (in an extremely painful way) and then preparing to kill him with a damn pocket knife. It's the equivalent of that one gif we've all see of the fighter doing a stupid endzone shuffle taunt in the ring before getting one-shot KO'd by the other fighter.

I've already pointed out that this kind of thinking is exactly why Superman is always written to be way less competent than he should be. "Superman is OP" is not something that has been valid for about 40 years now.
Superman is OP is not valid for 40 years, do tell lol
Superman isn't really "invulnerable", he is just very durable. This kind of logic does not apply to the multitude of other heroes that have similar or greater power sets to Superman because their durability doesn't dull their instincts so I strenuously object to the notion that it should apply to Superman as well.
I'm sorry I'm not noticing this great variety in superhero fights in any media that you are seeing. Except in The Batman, Batman actually got shot many times and he had his suit armored appropriately for it

You can have him struggle by having him try to save the villain and the innocent from his own power. He COULD punch the mechasuit with enough force to sent it to Pluto but he is trying to arrest the pilot so he holds back. "World of Cardboard." Have him try not to destroy buildings. It isn't hard to make Superman struggle.
America needs to stop doing this.

Everyone bitches about how OP characters are boring, yet the biggest anime of all time is literal OP gods on par with Superman beating the shit out of one another. Superman shouldn't be scaled down, rather, his villains should be scaled up. There really is no reason why people can't see Lex, the sex, Luthor as being capable of using his mass intellect (and alien tech) to design a suit that BTFOs Gods even without the Kryptoshite. The other Supes villains should equally be capable of taking him on. Zod is literally a Kryptonian, Brainiac is Krypton/alien tech, Livewire has no physical form just pure energy, Parasite is one-touch before OP mode, Mr. Mxyzptlk is literal God, Lobo is as strong an alien, etc..

Again, Superman is so OP that lowkey he is almost always holding back because if he didn't the fight would be over in a fraction of a second,
Depends on the opponent, which is the bigger issue. Most Supes villains, hell most in DC, are OP and usually pretty on par with him. A character like Lobo or Zod are basic jobbers, yet have the same durability and powers as Superman. Even a Sinestro or Reverse Flash should give him a hard time given how wild they can be.

Supergirl is weaker enough that she can be vulnerable in most fights and I don't remember her fights against regular humans or others significantly weaker than her being any different from Superman's
She's actually stronger

She's actually stronger
Stronk girl cope. One day she's potentially stronker than Superman some day in the future, next day while mind controlled and not holding back she straight up loses to Wonder Woman who straight up has lost or barely held her own against Superman going all out, Doomsday ragdolled Supergirl in Death of Superman while Superman killed him (while being killed by him), blah blah blah

And then Lex Luthor became the ultimate hero and saves the day. Brains > Brawn

@Basic Blond Boy Kara isn’t, that was from her reintroduction story and ignored afterwards, same thing with Zod, they are under a Yellow Sun, Clark was raised under it and matured under it. A nuke can kill her, it’ll fuck him up, but he’ll survive.
Superman is OP is not valid for 40 years, do tell lol
The Post-Crisis nerf and he has a base level that he is kept at. He gets surges where he’s fucking up Imperiex after a Sun dip but he’s been pretty consistently tough but not indestructible.

He’s a tank but he’s not overpowered, Clark’s just got that dog in him and he refuses to back down.

I see where ArthuriusMartyrius is coming from.

Spider-Man is acknowledged as being far stronger than he lets on or even he himself realizes until he gets mad, at which point he's correctly portrayed as being a total stomper of even high-tier superstrong villains, yet he holds back mentally and also still isn't an end-all be-all of strength. This is the in-universe reason to keep him "strong as he needs to be" for storytelling purposes. Even Hulk, correctly noted as THE Marvel superstrong character, is allowed to be knocked around/hurt/struggle till He Gets Angry, much as I noted Spidey gets dangerous once he's mad.

Superman's base level of strength is obviously much higher than Spidey's, and I DO think he should be the baseline strongest/most durable super in a typical DCU, so anything that actually IS stronger than him is A Big Deal - but we can adjust that "baseline" so he can still be knocked about, hurt until like Spidey he gets mad and drops his mental shackles. The issue is that pop culture FORGOT Superman should be "as strong as he needs to be" and instead focused on his "potential" and that has pervaded his, for lack of a better phrase, power level in many stories and adaptions. There's no reason to not let Superman be in the same level of "restraint" as Spidey till he locks in and focuses. You don't need to make a big deal of this "restraint" as a story reason either - it simply is, like we all know Spidey is stronger than he lets on (even to himself). Superman's strength is de-facto limitless, so it can also be portrayed as him locking in and persevering against foes as much as simply cutting loose. Even if he still struggles THEN, it becomes obvious why he's, well, Super when he inevitably wins the fight due to tapping into his strength and spirit.

Really, the way Spidey's superstrength is portrayed should be how Superman's is, baseline/power levels of those two aside.

I like the middle ground. Lex was born with a silver spoon but was “little m” millionaire and thinks he had it rough because dad told him “No” and later Lex thinks he is “self-made” but truth is he’s born with cheat codes on, same as Clark.
I personally dislike the idea that being born gifted is being born with cheat codes. It's as likely to produce someone who coasts through life because they didn't have to learn to actually try until they got to university or post-grad level, or in industry until they actually got some way into their career.

What really makes the difference is someone's will to succeed and fulfil their potential. Whether it's a large potential or a small potential, few really try to pursue that. Lex does and that's worthy of respect. Yes, he's brilliant, but it's his drive and ambition that define him. Meanwhile Superman - does he fulfil his potential? Yes. But reactively. And usually in the form of suffering or sacrifice. Honestly, Lex is far more the visionary than Superman is.

Nobody likes Green Arrow.
Comics version? Of course not. Stephen Amel version? You bet!

I said this to someone else recently but you know writing is good when a character says something that only they could say. The funniest moment in the show is delivered entirely deadpan and in character:

Oliver: "I don't think me training them is a good idea. The last person I trained I shot in the leg with an arrow."
Felicity: "Poor Barry."
Oliver: "I mean Roy. But also Barry."

The show had a bit of a slump in the middle but mostly stayed surprisingly strong. I must confess, I also didn't dislike Thea Queen in the show...

She must have been really irrelevant as the Batwoman show made her white (along with being another of Kate's exes) and none of the outrage led to the character being immediately recasted.

Funny how changing the race was suddenly an issue 🤔
The intersection between people who love comics and people who watched that show is barely a sliver. In fact, I'd say the first is almost incompatible with the latter unless you have super-human levels of ironic detachment.

Superman is already boring af because of how OP he is. He has to have some kind of vulnerability that awkshully works or he'd be even more boring. It isn't 1939, Superman facetanking everything with no (or only the slightest) difficulty isn't exciting like it was then
Again, Superman is so OP that lowkey he is almost always holding back because if he didn't the fight would be over in a fraction of a second, he'd be Omni-Man with his opponent a red smear all over his suit and the ground before the fight even started. Superman not holding back is rightly portrayed as some speshul occasion. I think you underestimate how difficult it is to make a fight involving what is basically a demigod (at least) interesting. Supergirl is weaker enough that she can be vulnerable in most fights and I don't remember her fights against regular humans or others significantly weaker than her being any different from Superman's
That is like saying Columbo sucks because we know the murderer. The appeal of Superman is his character. We know he wins at the end, the question is how. He has to protect people. He has to expose the bad guys. As strong as he is, punching does not always help with his other goals. He can punch the bad guy at Mach 12 but the shockwave would destroy the surroundings. Him caring for others creates stakes.

Superman isn't really "invulnerable", he is just very durable. This kind of logic does not apply to the multitude of other heroes that have similar or greater power sets to Superman because their durability doesn't dull their instincts so I strenuously object to the notion that it should apply to Superman as well.
Not saying he is literally invulnerable (I am exaggerating) but after the 20th time someone fired something at him and it didn't work, he would learn there is no point in dodging. He has withstood flamethrowers, lasers, bullets, rays and everything else. It is logical for him to grow somewhat complacent and then grow out of it as his enemies try stronger things. Superman should be like a hedgehog: Can run but staying where he is works better most of the time as it doesn't create sonic booms.

That is beside the point. Point is, Superman is surrounded by fragile buildings and creatures so he learned to hold back. Darkseid can take his punches but that is rare.

America needs to stop doing this.

We all love a fun OP character. They might win most of the time without breaking a sweat but watching them can be fun. In the end, it is entertainment. Make the OP character compelling and/or fun and we will not mind. Superman, Saitama, Gojo, anyone can be liked as long as they are fun. Also, Lex is a threat because of his plans. Yes, he has armors and Kryptonite but also a sharp mind that makes him valuable to others. He finances the city, villains and other organizations which makes him hard to get rid off. His tentacles reach everywhere.

She's actually stronger
No.

@Basic Blond Boy Kara isn’t, that was from her reintroduction story and ignored afterwards, same thing with Zod, they are under a Yellow Sun, Clark was raised under it and matured under it. A nuke can kill her, it’ll fuck him up, but he’ll survive.
This. For Clark, yellow sunlight has been making him ever stronger. Zod and Kara lack this amount of exposure. They DO have some advantages though. Both have combat training as Zod was a soldier while Kara had training due to the women in her family joining the military by tradition (this is newer lore iirc). Also, Zod comes with Kryptonian tech and henchmen of equal power. They are hardly equals but they manage.

I see where ArthuriusMartyrius is coming from.

Exactly. Such characters should hold back and choose to let loose. The writers tend to forget that.

Maybe Superman being OP would be boring if we had ever gotten it on screen a single time ever. We've never had a Superman movie where he kicks anyone's ass. besides the Snyder and Whedon JLA

Superman II, him and the Zod Squad throw shit at each other basically and then they get depowered, he beats up 1 regular guy in a diner in the end I guess but that is decidedly not what I'm talking about, Superman 3 him and his inner alcoholic throw down in a junkyard for a second, 4 he beats Nuclear Man i guess but its not like he whoops his ass, Returns he just gets stabbed with kryptonite, his ass kicked, and thrown off a cliff. Man of Steel he wins but he is just scrambling around fighting for his life not in control at all, BvS Batman hits him with some kryptonite and fucks him up, the new one he gets beat up by everyone and everything thrown at him and his dog saves the day.

He does the Superman thing where he shows up, takes no shit, and competently bodies the villian 1 single time ever, and it's Steppenwolf in JL. Maybe that shit would be boring if we had tons of it, but we had 1 movie in 50 years where he does it.

1938 or 2038 it doesnt matter, it isnt boring to have your hero be good at what he does, you just have to have other interesting shit going on. I of course dont think he should never struggle or something, even in a fight, I just think they overthink the OP thing and it would be nice to have a Superman who even seems like he knows how to fight.

I read when the last one came out that someone interviewed Grant Morrison about it and were trying to get him to gas the movie up and he liked it but for criticism said something like "Superman is a scrapper, I wanted to see him beat the bad guys up but he gets beaten up the whole movie"

You can have Superman struggle. Just not physically. He is not too weak to do anything. But everything else is fair game. Dealing with bombs that have a large radius and explode early if moved, finding ways to connect the bad guy to a crime, figuring out where hostages are on time, finding who is behind conspiracies or resolving a fight before anyone gets hurt. And that is what I just came up with.

In conclusion, you can have him struggle even without Kryptonite.

Also, Grant Morrison is the last person who should have been asked about that movie. He gets Superman too well. He understood the main issue immediately and proved it.

Yeah the normie/retard/simplification view on Supes always downplays or doesn’t acknowledge that he’s a fighter at his core. That he’s got a lot of gifts but that unwillingness to stay down is arguably his best.

He’s like the other red and blue alien who also got flak when he kicked ass on screen and killed his enemies, Optimus Prime. The retard opinion overpowers the truth. The “red, white and blue paragon” archetype may be all-loving but Captain America, Superman and Optimus Prime are fighters at their core. Spider-Man used to also have that dog but he’s the most down bad.

That’s why the Death of Superman comic is so good, Doomsday is something only he could fight. There’s plenty of guys who have similar strength to Superman, some are stronger but none of them have that fight in them that he has. What I’m saying is that he’s got the touch and even the naked blue retard was made to have a reality check after one conversation with the man he should’ve been.

God I fucking love Superman when the character is firing on all cylinders. That end fight in “Public Enemies” is one of the most underrated Superman fights.

“That was my best friend and you just killed him.”
-Superman about to beat the shit out of the funniest US president.

They could've just tried to get Specter off his useless jobbing ass for once so he could actually show everyone what literally being the "wrath of God" is meant to be, but he probably would've found a way to fuck up and lose anyway.
Possibly the most frustrating character in all of DC Comics, a guy who may well be omnipotent (like, he's got a portion of the strength of Omnipotent God) and he spends almost every single moment he is on panel finding new and interesting ways to lose fights through some specific hard counter. It's sorta gotten to a point where any given crossover event has to find a way to fuck him over before anything else.

Death of Superman was however, a fairly decent story, I just wish that Doomsday wasn't such a dogshit and boring looking enemy. His design looks like my dog threw him up.

I actually like Doomsday’s New 52 Diablo look, it should’ve kept the long hair but the devil horns are good. At the end of the day he’s just an excuse to have a Hulk in the rogues gallery.

I just fucking hate that every modern Doomsday is someone else mutated or is someone else’s weapon. I like the hyper-evolved killing machine made by nobodies, very Weyland-like, make a nightmare, get killed by it and let the universe suffer for your arrogance.

Small correction: Superman is a fighter, Cap and Optimus are soldiers.

I too believe he relishes in the opportunity to get into a fight with someone who can take his punches and is asking for more as long as they keep the damage to a minimum.

Doomsday is fairly awesome when he is done right.

The point of the scene isn't that Clark is the bestest fighter that can beat anyone. The point is showing the monumental degree Supes holds himself back the entire show.

The problem with Superman isn't that he's too powerful. It's that people have forgotten how to have fun. He was even more powerful back in the Silver Age or whatever you call it. Had new powers every week, but the stories weren't lacking in challenges.

Girl cops! He has powers, but how can he use them secretly?
Superman_108.png

He has amnesia! He has powers, but has a crisis of identity.
Superman_126.png

Space Plague! He has powers, but must deal with isolation and mortality!
Superman_156.png

Superman's Friend, Lex Luthor! He has powers, but personal friendships take a fascinating turn.
Superman_175.png

Amnesia - Part II. Superman knows who he is but nobody else does!
Superman_150.png

The unhelpful assistant! Superman is powerful, but even he can't resolve the age old problem of the well-meaning person who keeps trying to help and making things worse.
Superman_119.png

Super-Merman. He has even more new powers, but the drama comes from the effect on those close to him.
Superman_139.png

I might be saying all this in a funny way but I'm making a valid point (I think). He can be as powerful as you like but if you have a sense of fun, a willingness to explore things other than can he or can he not beat someone in a fight, you absolutely can write entertaining stories.

Note, I tried to find the one in which Jimmy Olsen is trying to ditch a girl who is too brainy for him by giving her a cheap fake diamond, only for Superman to think Jimmy has been scammed and replace it with a flawless new diamond he made out of coal. But the point is made.

Plus him slaughtering the scientist who "made" him is very satisfying.
