Dead Space Thread

I've been playing Calisto and it fucking blows. 'hey what if Dead Space but melee'.

How bout you go fuck yourself

I spent nearly 70 bucks, you don't have to. Don't buy this game
I wasn't that crazy about Dead Space, I liked the gameplay but the storyline sucked. I was going to wait to get it for 30 to 20 buck range to pick it up for shits and giggles.

Thanks for the report. I had a hunch it isn't going to be anything special after seeing how carbon copy the main character is in design to Isaac from Dead Space.

Less gore in a body-horror game is going to REALLY blow, since that's absolutely the time to use it.

Still keeping this one on my radar, but I'm not sure how I'll feel about the changes besides the lack of gore. The first Dead Space was structured well enough that Isaac didn't need to talk. Every other character either doesn't give a shit what you think, is talking over someone else to tell their side, or is too crazy to comprehend anything you might say. Despite that, I didn't mind Isaac talking in 2. I actually thought he had some very good lines in that one.

Daina: Isaac, It's Daina. You have to dismember the creatures. It's the only way to kill them.
Isaac: I know. I've had a lot of practice.

Having him talk also smoothed over some main beats in the story, namely trying to keep Stross from going nuts, arguing with himself over the Nicole apparition, and developing a relationship with Ellie. I know it's invalidated soon after he does it, but it was a nice moment when he tried to to save Ellie with no consideration for himself.

As for 3, I don't think him talking was the worst part of that game, but I'll admit it would've helped if he had talked less and seemed more isolated. Little fuzzy on recollection, but the most awkward moments for me were Ellie hating on you for a bit after her boyfriend betrayed and tried to kill you (when all they had to do was TELL HER what happened), and this strange the-power-of-friendship thing that happened with Carver towards the end.

Of course the real problem with Dead Space 3 was going ham on the guns and everything being so bright and not-scary. The atmosphere was just so different from the original by that point.

Dead Space remake is looking a lot better after Callisto turned into a shitshow on release day.

And I know a lot of people are cautious about anything made by EA, but remember that Jedi Fallen Order was well liked. I’m still gonna wait for the steam reviews though, but at least it doesn’t have to say “made by the creator of Dead Space, so just trust us ok.”

I guessed that would be the case, what about the vibe when you're playing it. Is it spooky?

Not at all. Some of the scares are kinda laughable to be honest. Like you go open a chest that's conveniently placed in front of a glass window and a space zombie is going to jump at it and scream at you for a bit. The window doesn't even break so you just stare at the guy for a second and move on.

It's pretty lame.

To me? Not remotely. To be spooky I actually have to give a shit about whats happening. One of the spookiest things in Dead Space 2 for example is during the initial outbreak, you can hear shit going on in the residential area and are given rather strong clues that a bunch of kids are getting massacred and there isnt jack you can do about it. Calisto is: 'Boo I'm a scary monster. Heh heh but you didn't expect me to pop out here.'

Kinda hard to be spook when you can just beat everything to death with your stick.

Me: extremely excited for The Calypso protocol

Excuse me I was almost feeling something resembling joy nowadays

I wanted to pre-order it, and Im a "never pre-order" type of guy. But my rational brain held me back and thank fuck for that.

Im not even mad at its technical issues because those CAN be fixed with enough time and patches (but I want to make it clear I hate that shit as much as the next guy and they should be ashamed of themselves), but the issue is on the gameplay...wow...how can you fuck up a survival horror game this badly? You gotta literally Punch-Out them to death with the gunplay feeling like a secondary when in Dead Space (and in nearly every S.H game), the guns are literally what is fucking keeping you alive because once these abominations get near you, its usually death or at least a good chunk of your HP being gone.

But in TCP, thats the gameplay loop. Getting close to the enemies and fucking beating them to death with melee weapons with guns being used once or twice.

I guess I wouldnt mind that so much if this game didnt constantly advertise itself as the "new dead space" (Im starting to notice a patern here with these "spiritual successor made by the 'same people' that made X successful turning out to be disappointments at best). If it was its own thing, it was not good but at least it wasnt banking on a pre existing property to get people to buy it. Its fucking dishonest.

So based on the new gameplay showcase im actually pretty excited for what they are doing for the new one.

Apparently they are going to turn it into a metrovania where you can explore the whole ship at anytime. There will be more survivors and side quests to interact with. You'll get "pick your poison" options where you can restore power to rooms but have to choose between oxygen in total darkness or lights with no oxygen. Issac wont be a chatterbox and his lines will change to reflect how hurt or stressed he is. I also like how the Stasis power has been made a lot less of a game breaker, ive seen it fail to work a couple times.

They also mentioned tying the story more into the sequels, which greatly allays my fear they'll kill Issac off.

My issue is with that is, assuming this works (and honestly after seeing T.C.P failing, it will no doubt be a big sale boost), will they remake 2 and eventually 3? Or go in a different direction? I wouldnt want them to kill Isaac off, its ultimately HIS story but I wonder if we will return to Titan Station or if they will possibly even change the origin of the markers (the brethren moons felt like they worked better in concept than execution).

This, DS 2 really made you feel this was an outbreak. In DS 1, you saw the aftermath of one, in DS 2, you got the honour of seeing it happen in the middle of it. Citizens running for their lives. Some getting massacrated, others committing ritualistic suicide (or simply because they would rather die quickly and painless compared to what the necros would do to them). Mad laughter coming from closed doors you cant open and among many many other hints at horrible shit happening to which Clarke cant do anything to stop it, merely focus on saving himself.

It added to the sheer horror and helplessness, these people are dying, you are probably the most "capable" of dealing with these necros and its still is far from enough to do any sort of difference.

It reminds Clarke he couldnt save anyone, especially Nicole.

TCP has no sense of horror and powerlessness to what is happening.

There is a reason why fighting necros head on was usually suicide, they are very fast and brutal. They have sharp bladed arms that can stab and slice you into pieces in just a couple of swings. Thats why the game and lore made it clear that you gotta take them from a distance and "CUT THEIR LIMBS", it was to harm them effectively and stop them from being able to close the distance between you and them so quickly.

the girls looks so old now (ironic that Hammond looks younger and more good looking) but Nicole... Jesus, what did they do too you? oh, and Kendra is now gay.

Thank God they added that, the suspense was killing me.

Then again, Kendra always came off as a bitch so now it makes more sense (outside of the whole part of a dangerous cult stuff...)

I wonder if they wont pull a twist and make Hammond evil and Kendra good? I dont know, it almost feels like they made her gay to make her seem better.

Hopefully they dont do my boy Hammond dirty like that. Guy had a short fuse but he ultimately meant well.

The thing that excites me the most is the possibility of DS2R if the remake does well. Going back to the Sprawl would be fantastic. I still love the fake out at the end of DS2.

Just because over the top melee kills of monsters in Doom worked doesn't mean it will work in what is supposed to be a serious grimdark horror game

Doom of course has always had good ranged fighting too. Killing overpowered cartoonish over the top monsters with over the top cartoonish overpowered violence. You're just some guy but you can tear apart these monsters all kinds of ways. It's funny. It's fun. The Callisto Project is supposed to be serious, like Dead Space, right? Melee killing over the top overpowered monsters doesn't fit with that

Canonically Isaac is supposed in be late 40’s in game and same with Nicole. I’ll defend this decision as continuity from Dead Space 2 and 1 since I always found the age gap between 1 and 2 with Nicole’s design to be jarring.

Something that really weirded me out was that TCP advertised additional death animations as DLC or some shit? Like...they were cool on Dead Space and intentionally getting killed was fun to see how gruesome way they found to kill Isaac was nice but it was never THE thing you do in Deadp Space.
