Dead video game series/franchises you refuse to let go

In general, I don't like the idea of sequels, it has this stench of unoriginality and cash-grab to me. But even having said that, Betrayal at Krondor deserves a much better sequel than the unplayable, awful Return to Krondor. Wouldn't mind a Little Big Adventure game either.

Someone already said this, but I'd also love to see Suikoden return.

Also, I love Monster Rancher but since physical media is kinda sorta dying a death, I don't see how a game like this would be feasible in the era of digital downloads. But still, I miss the simple joys of not just the monster training/pit fighting aspect but going through every CD/DVD in your entire house (and then your friend's house) hoping to get a rare dragon.....as well as the crushing disappointment when all you end up with are lame-ass plant monsters.

And a proper Seiken Densetsu/Mana game would be swell. Not a remake and certainly not some fucking Vita/iOS/Android f2p piece of shit.

Not sure if anyone said this yet, but there probably isn't going to be another Max Payne. Not that I dislike 3, indeed, I seem to be in the minority of people that really like the changes in tone and setting of 3. 2 was still the best.

I just don't see Rockstar putting another one together, even though Remedy has said that it wanted to do Max Payne 4 after it was finished with Quantum Break (which sucked). It's not like it was even an unsuccessful game, unless Rockstar considers selling 4 million copies in a year unsuccessful.

I'd love to see Max come back too. 4 million copies in a year is definitely successful by anyone else's measuring, but this is Rockstar. They published GTA V, and that's sold at least 60 million copies in the two years it's been out.

There is or was a campaign on Twitter from the people of the Suikoden revival movement to resurrect it for PC , don't know how that ended and we all know how shitty konami is

I'm still sad Skies of Arcadia never got a sequel. It was a fun world, and so optimistic.

I'm absolutely torn on this one, because on the one hand, I'd love to see more of the SoA world, because it's just so unique (and still is to this day) a concept. Not to mention in a sea of gloomy/edgy JRPG protags that were sorry bootlegs of Cloud and Squall, Vyse's optimistic and friendly attitude was a much-needed breath of fresh air.

OTOH, the ending felt fairly conclusive overall, so if there was to be a sequel, it'd have to focus on a brand new cast of characters and Vyse and Co. would probably be relegated to supporting/cameo status.

Agreed. I'd like to see something so far in the future where you have legends of Vyse and the others as discoveries or something. I just want to fly around in an airship again.

This isn't exclusive to video games. In general all media is focused on sequels. Especially in this era of social media and the internet where nostalgia, brand recognition and search engine dominance is so valuable. It's why remakes and reboots are so common. Nowadays a lot of video games are made solely with the intention of being the start in a multi-game franchise. A good example is when Watch_Dogs released the publisher very arrogantly announced it was going to be just the first game in a franchise. After it sold poorly and didn't do well critically all notion of that vanished.

I personally agree with your statement since there's a lot of series I wish didn't have sequels. And a lot of series that while I appreciate had sequels I really could've lived without. Video games almost feel synonymous with sequels, especially in today's climate.

Bomberman had some really fun games. They were all pretty much the exact same till it went to the n64 and then it got WEIRD. The series was already strange to begin with but for some reason once it hit 3d they just went balls to the walls adventure games and it was completely fine save for the annoying tutorials that they wouldn't stop putting in. YES I KNOW HOW TO THROW BOMBS GOD DAMN.

Ape Escape!!!! The third game was so good. It's a Sony IP why isn't there a fourth game? It's been ten years!
I remember they cancelled the US release of "million monkeys, followed by an "Indefinite delay" for the UK release. Said game was apperently a mission based spinoff (and also probably a sequel to that weird party game based on the game mechanics) where you had the option to play as the Villain. They then released the PSmove spinoff that probably murdered the franchise somehow due to poor sales.

Weirdly though they used "HD" versions of the models from that game for Playstation all stars and it looked fucking weird because the style of that spinoff is cel shaded. they also removed Spike's nose for some reason.

Everything Konami owns. Especially Castlevania.

Azure Dreams. A rougelike RPG with similarities to Pokemon made by them. It had LOTS of potential. I would like to see a proper reboot or something similar. The one in DS doesn't count.

Oh and Suikoden. Just want to see how it'll end. Since after III it seems like they were planning to do something else that tells anything after that game.

Stalker not getting a sequel soon. I'm playing through all of them again (Clear sky is the worst of the lot, but still decent) and I am having so much fun. Where is my Stalker 2!?

GSC bit the dust, apparently what little work went into STALKER 2 was mostly unpaid.

It's a shame too because it looked pretty good from what was released. Unfortunately the closest thing we might get to a STALKER 2 is Survivarium.

Now that I think about it, we could do with another proper Grandia game.

Battle system's just too good.

Indeed even ubisoft copied the system in Child of light

I would like a true and honest remake of alpha centauri , no, civilization beyond earth doesn't count

And would love if square revive somehow Threads of fate instead of pestering with ports to android

Considering what I'm been hearing about Homefront I have to say Freedom Fighters.
Freedom fighters was a game about fighting Russian Invaders as an American Plumber. It was a great game that incorporated things like squad commands with actually competent soldiers and you can get up to 12 of them. Plenty of levels that are linked in a way where completing an objective on one map changes something on another map. Like blowing up a bridge will stop APCs from dropping soldiers off on another map. It also had great music too.

I have to admit I'm a sucker for American rebels fighting for freedom from oppressive foreigners. So naturally I looked forward to Homefront and that was a letdown so I went back to waiting and then I heard about Homefront Revolution and that it was going to be open world and actually focus on guerrilla warfare I was extremely interested. Oh well I guess I'll just go back to waiting and shake my head the closest I'll get to a sequel is that one mission in Kane and Lynch.

I have two: One of them is extremely well-known and the other is slightly obscure:
The first would be Crash Bandicoot. The franchise has a very interesting cast of characters and the games were stellar. I haven't played all of them, but my favorite was Crash Team Racing. I enjoyed leaving people in the dust with Ripper Roo and Tiny Tiger, and I hope they make well-represented appearances in future games like Twinsanity did.

The other franchise is Bloody Roar. It was a very original fighting game which featured fighters which had the ability to transform into animals which beat each other up. It's not the best fighting game (That would be Tekken and Street Fighter), but it's certainly up there and worth a look. My best and favorite characters were Gado the Lion, Yugo the Wolf and Shina the Leopard.
