Generally, the QTEs aren't too obnoxious. For now, however, I have some lore for you guys: The first of my lore segments for DP!
This one isn't too spoilery, and discusses the nature of the evils that York and company fights and the nature of the so-called "Otherworld" Segments. Que up the chilling atmospheric music and stay a spell:
We'll go over the Shadows next.

In Deadly Premonition, the first few areas of the game let you know that something is well-and-truly wrong in Greenvale, with bizarre, haunting, and freakish entiries called Shadows in areas. These areas are often engulfed in an "otherworldly" area, rife with purplish fog and with a corrupted, horrifying appearance, often flecked with roots and vines. At a glance, people assume this is similar to Silent Hill, wherein the spiritual power of the town was corrupted by the dark god of the cult, but in Deadly Premonition, the areas that are "otherworldly" have a different significance.
A popular theory in paranormal investigation is the theory of Resonance. This theory specifically details that, as a place is lived in, worked in, etc, it absorbs, to a degree, the emotional state of those who dwelled in it. This is described, in layman's terms, that someplace that feels "safe" (such as a church or library) often has had positive events occur, whilst those that feel "off" somehow trended to have bad things happen. All Greenvale's history suggests at a very dark and very fucked-up past, resulting in considerable such resonance. This is heavily suggested by the "Spiritual Map" quests from Keith (the ones that get you infinite ammo weapons and such) where the locations are zones of tragedy and horror with far stronger enemies than normal.
In general, however, you're going to note that in every location the "Otherworld" phenomenon triggers, it will be in a place where terrible things happened at some point (except for Cloudy With a Chance of Evil, which I'll get to in a later post). These intrusions invariably cause Shadows to appear, and can (albeit temporarily) effect the surrounding environment, temporarily isolating those in it. Rather than an internal spiritual power of Greenvale, these intrusions are caused by an external force - one which is also a major plot element, so I can't get into too much detail here.
The "Otherworld" overlaps the normal world in places, but not in the sense that Silent Hill's does. Instead, only those specifically attuned to it are susceptible to its pull (at first) - people such as York. York himself is terrifyingly familiar with this phenomenon, as you'll eventually learn and as evidenced by his "Zach.... They're here!!" line he says when he encounters the "Otherworld" phenomenon. Because it is caused by an external entity, the "Otherworld" waxes stronger as this entity exhibits its power - by the end of the game, the influence of this entity has gotten strong enough to overlay the "Otherworld" - manifesting parts of the town's horrifically tragic past - for any unfortunate enough to encounter it. It is a malign presence - one actively trying to thwart Francis York Morgan.
