Deadly Premonition - Discussion and Analysis

Generally, the QTEs aren't too obnoxious. For now, however, I have some lore for you guys: The first of my lore segments for DP!

This one isn't too spoilery, and discusses the nature of the evils that York and company fights and the nature of the so-called "Otherworld" Segments. Que up the chilling atmospheric music and stay a spell:

In Deadly Premonition, the first few areas of the game let you know that something is well-and-truly wrong in Greenvale, with bizarre, haunting, and freakish entiries called Shadows in areas. These areas are often engulfed in an "otherworldly" area, rife with purplish fog and with a corrupted, horrifying appearance, often flecked with roots and vines. At a glance, people assume this is similar to Silent Hill, wherein the spiritual power of the town was corrupted by the dark god of the cult, but in Deadly Premonition, the areas that are "otherworldly" have a different significance.

A popular theory in paranormal investigation is the theory of Resonance. This theory specifically details that, as a place is lived in, worked in, etc, it absorbs, to a degree, the emotional state of those who dwelled in it. This is described, in layman's terms, that someplace that feels "safe" (such as a church or library) often has had positive events occur, whilst those that feel "off" somehow trended to have bad things happen. All Greenvale's history suggests at a very dark and very fucked-up past, resulting in considerable such resonance. This is heavily suggested by the "Spiritual Map" quests from Keith (the ones that get you infinite ammo weapons and such) where the locations are zones of tragedy and horror with far stronger enemies than normal.

In general, however, you're going to note that in every location the "Otherworld" phenomenon triggers, it will be in a place where terrible things happened at some point (except for Cloudy With a Chance of Evil, which I'll get to in a later post). These intrusions invariably cause Shadows to appear, and can (albeit temporarily) effect the surrounding environment, temporarily isolating those in it. Rather than an internal spiritual power of Greenvale, these intrusions are caused by an external force - one which is also a major plot element, so I can't get into too much detail here.

The "Otherworld" overlaps the normal world in places, but not in the sense that Silent Hill's does. Instead, only those specifically attuned to it are susceptible to its pull (at first) - people such as York. York himself is terrifyingly familiar with this phenomenon, as you'll eventually learn and as evidenced by his "Zach.... They're here!!" line he says when he encounters the "Otherworld" phenomenon. Because it is caused by an external entity, the "Otherworld" waxes stronger as this entity exhibits its power - by the end of the game, the influence of this entity has gotten strong enough to overlay the "Otherworld" - manifesting parts of the town's horrifically tragic past - for any unfortunate enough to encounter it. It is a malign presence - one actively trying to thwart Francis York Morgan.

We'll go over the Shadows next.

A interesting theory although I thought their was a differnt thing for their being Shadows,I thought they were made because once people died in the town then they come back as spirits idk I might be wrong about that.

I wanna see if their will be more lore on some of the characters mostly about Log Lady,Thomas and Micheal the guy that drives Henry around.Mostly I wonder if their is a theory on Log Lady or the characters that have deeper roots in the town.

You're actually not far off. You're also quite correct that some characters have a bit of a history with the town and why it's so fucked right now.

Here's some more fun:

Idle:

"Kill...."
"Why..."
"Blood...."
"Help... Me..."

On Spotting the Player:
"You..!!"
"I'm sorry...!!"
"There..!!"
"Kill you...!!"
"Want... Your.... Body..."

Lost Track of the Player's Position (usually because of holding breath):
"Where are you...?"
"Unseen...."
"Hiding...?"

Close to Player's Position:

"Kill..!!"
"Join us...."
"Why...?!"
"...End this!!"

Injured (by player or environment):
"Stop it..!!"
"Let me die!!"
"Don't kill me..!!"
"Help me..!!"
"It hurts...!!"

Attacking:

"Catch!!" (Shadows armed with projectiles only; they say this before firing)
"Want your body!!" (Grab attack)
"Kill you!!"
"Die..!!"
"No escape..!!"

Dying:
"Why...?"
"Don't want to die...."
"Kill.... You...."
"Thank.... You...." (This one's purportedly quite rare)

You're on the right track, to put it simply, but the reason is the key.

I guess ya don't want to tell me since i might get spoiled form it which is fine,Their is something i want to talk about and that is who was the original raincoat killer and their is red mist at night?

Although if ya answered that i might get spoiled and would have to play the game.

The original raincoat killer's identity will be revealed in due time. There is a purplish mist you can see in both the otherworld, and in tiny amounts when it rains.

If you're out and about late at night - between Midnight and 6:00 AM - beware, for this is when the aforementioned Cloudy With a Chance of Evil occurs. In this scenario, Shadows can appear anywhere outdoors - as can other nasties, including Mad/Wild Birds and Dogs. The former are suicide enemies unlikely to hit you if you keep moving - the latter are gigantic hell-beasts that will fuck your shit if you encounter one. The Dogs tend to appear en masse if you drive in a car, especially in the big, open areas between parts of Greenvale and around the Hospital area.

In general, a good rule of thumb is that if you're outdoors when this phenomenon hits, STAY THE FUCK OFF THE ROAD IF POSSIBLE. If you're in the Yorkmobile, however, feel free to ignore this advice - it has infinite HP and essentially trivializes this part of the game. Dogs become more common the later in the game you are, and one chapter necessitates you drive during this phenomenon, Dogs and all, so be alert.

The dogs can be killed but have a lot of HP. Use stronger weapons. Again, you may have to do this during one specific chapter.

On the off-chance you wind up caught out in the open from this, your options are limited. The best solution is to find a safe spot (the Tree of Anna and Cemetary Rest Cot are the most obvious spots) and sleep it out. You can use other rest areas (there's a fucking bunch) as well, but these lack food options. Do not use the Great Deeryard Hotel - Going back there, traditionally, ends many chapters, so you want to avoid using it because of this.

If rest isn't an option, going someplace safe is. Any shop open at night can protect you whilst you Smoke, including the Galaxy of Terror (when it finally opens) and Richard's bar, SWERY 65. Other places open late can also provide protection.

If all else fails, your only option is to bunker down and fight until dawn. Any area with a lot of varied terrain and/or fences is golden for this purpose. You're better off in a suburban area than someplace like the Lumberyard or the like.

Ah that is what I thought,Well I have not ran into dogs and hell beasts but I'm sure I will later on lol.

Btw does ya know anything about Henry the gas mask guy and his connection to the town?and for that matter why Michael the British guy is their with him?

Michael is both his associate and adopted son. You'll find out more about both as you go.

Okay then the sheriff im guessing i will be learning more about him later on?What i want to know is about the back story with the town cuz playing 3 hours in and im still confused on what is going on.

It comes into focus way later, but here's the spoiler for whoever wants it.

Ages ago, Greenvale became an unwitting testing ground for a chemical weapon deployed by the National Guard. Why this happened is inexorably tied to another one of the characters (ironically enough, Lysander, former military, had nothing to do with this). The chemical weapon? A purplish toxic mist, distilled from the Red Seeds.

Henry, the wheelchair-bound eccentric you meet, was just a teenager when this happened, and got caught out in the middle of it. He got exposed, and describes, terrifyingly, the symptoms of the toxin - it drives those exposed to madness, driving out consciousness and provoking them into a killing frenzy. Just as madness threatened to overtake him, Henry was knocked unconscious - by the Original Raincoat Killer.

The Original Raincoat Killer was no monster: It was Henry's father. Somehow resistant to the toxin, clad in a raincoat and makeshift breather to protect himself, and armed with a fire axe, he cut a swathe to the place the toxin was being deployed to try to stop it - and failed. His killings were brutal - but they were, in fact, mercy killings. This is abundantly clear in both Henry's description and the flashback scene you get to see, wherein the bulk of the town's inhabitants were driven completely insane and began murdering one another, and he ended their suffering before they could harm anyone else. This incident tainted the town's soil. Minute levels of the toxin seep when it rains - all within safe levels, but Henry doesn't trust it. Hence the gasmask. In truth, the source of the toxin is much closer than most realize.

The Shadows are the undead spirits of the victims of the Purple Toxin. Driven by blind rage and infused with the horror of their final moments, they are trapped spirits, at once victims and killers alike. Hence their dialogue being so dissonant. All the places they appear are places the Purple Toxin was involved with. The opening path: Where people tried to escape the town on foot and failed. The hospital: Where the first victims of the Toxin went and claimed more victims. The killing sites and evidence sites are obvious. The shadows want to escape the realm they are sealed in, but are driven by homicidal rage. They seek to possess others - if York loses all his health during the mouth-grab attack from an unarmed shadow, they will bodily force their way down York's throat, resulting in an instant kill. Word of god from SWERY is that this is their gambit to escape the Otherworld, but being homicidal spirits, their doing so will not bode well for the world. As the source of the Shadows' progenitor becomes more and more apparent, the Otherworld grows in strength. Eventually, it gets to the point where everyone in Greenvale can be subjected to it - as several soon learn....

I thought so so that means the shadows were the people that were influenced by the purple mist and are now angry spirits,Although i heard the town had a connection to York but it was a major spoiler so i avoided it.I will say that like Twin Peaks the characters are really quirky and weird so im starting to like them like Linda i think her name is the policewomen,Thomas,Log Lady and the freckled teen in the hospital i forget her name too.

I heard some weird shit happens later on in the game so i can't wait for that.

Sort of related to Deadly Premonition since it comes from the game: anyone ever tried to make a sinner's sandwich? I tried and it wasn't that bad.

Absolutely loved this game despite the many flaws it has.
Yeah, the game has problems. For one, there is the combat with guns. Heard the control scheme is unconventional for console players. As a person who played it on PC, I can't move the aiming cursor past a certain point. I was at least lucky there were stray shots that killed the final boss. Then there is how driving is handled. At least it's kinda fun having York drive fast enough that a turn could end up having the car lean on one side.

If you've played the game or haven't played but are interested enough to see what it's about, I recommend watching these guys' playthrough. Very entertaining. One guys played it all the way through, the other hadn't.
