Deadly Premonition - Discussion and Analysis

Roald Dalh wrote this on people but I feel like it's applicable to media as well. Certain movies, shows, games and whatever else that is rough around the edges, maybe the set is subpar or the costumes are lackluster, but you can feel the chemistry of everyone involved, that everyone behind the scenes had a blast making it and that energy just carries over into the final presentation.

DP is an example of that. I dont know what was going on really but just glancing at some interviews and notes you get this vibe that everyone was all in on this project and really put thier heart into it and it shows.

It's honestly one of the best games I've ever played when it first came out and it still holds a special place to me for the joy that can be derived from gaming medium. The characters and by extension thier voice actors are great, I wish knew more about them because of how compelling they are. The music is fun, the story is crazy but engaging. This is the fun that gaming needs to return to.

All the characters are good in way but York is such a stand out. I wish there was more continuing adventures for him, is settle for book form just to keep it going.

Eh, Kaysen seemed actually decent in D4, unless I totally missed something.

I do enjoy Forrest Kaysen continuing to be an evil threat throughout all his games.

Forrest has an appearance in every single SWERY game, if only a distant cameo mention, and that led me to a rather humorous discovery.

There's an old PS2 game called Extermination, and it's a Survival Horror game taking place in Antarctica - one of the first Survival Horror games for the console, in fact. It's a decent, if not spectacular game, and it does a lot right and takes some interesting risks (it's one of the rare Survival Horror games where you start relatively well-armed). Most people forgot about it, but it had a cult following and it's one of the rare PS2 games I managed to hold onto during the move. I've always enjoyed it, if nothing else.

Recently, for shits and giggles, I fired it up and had some fun with it, and something interesting happened. In one of the in-game documents you can find, someone mentions a Forrest Kaysen. Grabbing the box and checking the book, I quickly realized that none other than ya boi SWERY was the game's designer! So now that I realized I was in the SWERYverse this entire time, I went over the game with a fine-tooth-comb looking for DP references, and to my surprise I found a few, but the biggest by far was the FK reference. A close second: Extermination has an underslung flamethrower you can find (It's for removing sheet ice, but was adapted into a weapon), and the Wesley Special, a flamer in DP, looks almost exactly like it but in black.

Kaysen was in The Missing?

I totally missed it.

EDIT: Oh Lord, the toy. How did I forget?

Didn't realize that I'd already posted my crash count posts that close to each other *yawn*. The first one says 3, so I'm thinking I said two the second time because there were probably 2 memorable crashes and one forgettable. DP is interesting to me because even something like a crash really doesn't set you back that much.

In other news, you can pre-order and pre-install DP2 from the eshop now. I was suprised at how much smaller it was than the first game at 4.8GB compared to 6.4GB for Origins. I'm thinking that they're probably being more efficient with resources this time around.
Probably fewer porting steps this time. The first game started as a PS2 game, ported to 360 then PS3, then PC, then wherever else.

At the after credits bit, it’s shown he has some kind of connection/deal going with the foster father of the protagonist’s dead wife. He’s also super pale white and talks like a possessed person.

Extermination was the first game made by Project Siren, the studio initially started by a group of devs who worked on the first two Resident Evil games and got sick of what an asshole Kamiya was. They were later joined by members of the original Silent Hill team and made the Siren series.

Explains why it has so many good ideas in it.

speaking of which they were being fucky with trailer footage, looking nice and crusty. weirdly still playable
I think I can tolerate it getting crusty when outdoors moving about. Looks like everything is closer together on the map, so travel time is cut down, but it's good to see the "Fun Facts" are still in the game. Honestly it looks like it'll be a decent sequel, a new case in a new town with new characters. Shame it took ten years to get a sequel.

I just hope skating isn't a complete crapshoot control wise, I mean driving was probably the only thing that was frustrating enough to be a problem for me in the original. plus apparently there are tricks and upgrades to this side mode so I hope we see something a tad more in depth

The sound mixing when skating seemed to be the worst parst, it's loud as hell and drowns out the fun facts monologue. Unless fixed it is going to be annoying.
