There's no smoke without fire, and there's no inferno without fuel. This was already a powderkeg of a topic, both sides were eager to let the other side know whats what. That's why the exact same thing happened a few weeks back on RW twitter. Europeans are insecure about their supposed food superiority and Americans are insecure about their goyslop.

Organic is definitely a scam unless you get it for these reasons:
  • It tastes better than non organic
  • It has noticeably higher nutrient content
Outside of that, I don’t think it’s worth it, especially most organic produce. The threshold to be considered “organic” in the US isn’t as high as people think it is, and without GMOs and some pesticides, food prices would be astronomically higher. An organic farmer will likely make use of certain pesticides, but not ones that would take away the “organic” label. With lots of organic foods, you end up paying 3-4X the price for not as much difference in quality most of the time. Personally, something being local is a bigger selling point than being organic.

most middle and upper class supermarkets have a bakery area where they sell bread, croissants, bagels, etc that are baked daily in the morning. compared to europe supermarkets, they are much bigger and designed to be one stop shops which is why a town with a big supermarket may not have a bakery or deli near it. regardless, they may still allow local bakeries to sell their goods in the supermarket on commission. its a combination of good bread being more expensive, not lasting as long and the average distance of a supermarket to a home (unlike europe where everything is within walking distance) that makes a lot of money conscious people opt for the cheap shelf stable wonder bread. i think theres also a much bigger risk for an american business trying to run a bakery solely on bread. americans are fat and used to eating junk so a baker that just sold bread rather than pastries would go bankrupt fast

as for cheeses, supermarkets sell more than kraft singles. the good stuff which is usually imported is just more expensive so less people buy it. i'm not a cheese expert but I'd like to believe stuff like this is acceptable.

as for meat you are unfortunately correct. only way to get local meat is to buy it direct from a farm and that usually requires buying whole sections of the cow but once again it just goes down to supply and demand. most americans cannot afford good meat which is usually 3-5 times more expensive per pound so they settle for the cheap USDA meat. if there was more of a demand for this type of meat prices would drop and more farms would do it.

but overall i agree with the sentiment of everything though as annoyingly smug as it is written. all the gmo produce and chemically injected food is cheap by design and already ingrained into our system as a tool to keep the masses content which is why it is controlled so heavily by the government. it is extremely unhealthy, lowers your lifespan but it's cheap enough that as long as you can afford it you are able to get by and won't feel any motivation to make it yourself. as bad as that food is it's the only thing keeping a lot of the population fed which is why nothing will change.

LOLcow esque OP imo. I can go down to the farmer's market on the weekend and be absolutely overwhelmed with options for all sorts of locally produced food. It's expensive sure, but it's there.
