I have been a Sailor Moon fan for a shorter time than most people, since late 2008. However, in those six years, Sailor Moon has impacted my life
enormously. Back when I started watching it, I was in a very bad place regarding my mental and emotional health. Sailor Moon (along with my faith, my family, and psychiatric help) is what allowed me to crawl out of the hole I had dug myself into. It was (and still is) a source of endless optimism, hope, and happiness for me. It told me to keep believing in myself and in the future, to not give up or surrender when things got tough. Usagi in particular was someone I greatly admired; like me, she was a klutz and a crybaby and didn't seem like she was going to make it, but little by little she matured into a strong, brave warrior who never lost sight of her compassion and mercy. She (along with the other Senshi) inspired me to be a better person and to harness my inner strength. So I know exactly what you're talking about when you say that Sailor Moon is precious to you.
I never had friends to discuss SM with, either. It actually didn't bother me that much, because I've always been solitary by nature. However, a few years ago, I started a blog on Tumblr, where I would write posts on numerous topics and post the many pictures I had and people flocked to it. I started making friends immediately and now, nearly four years later, I have thousands of followers who love to read and discuss my thoughts on the series and the various analyses I do. I can't tell you how healthy and therapeutic it's been for me to socialize and bond with like-minded people who love what I love. I really want you to have that experience, too.
Tumblr's gone down the shitter, but there are still tons of blogs that are awesome and if you're savvy enough, you can craft your own little sphere that's full of cool, friendly people. I'd be more than happy to get you started. If you PM me, I can recommend a ton of Sailor Moon blogs that are owned by friends or great people in general. I also actually cofounded
an amazing Sailor Moon forum and, while I'm pretty much MIA from there nowadays (through no fault of the forums, I'm just a lazy slob who really needs to get with it), it's still an amazing place full of friendly people who will be more than happy to discuss Sailor Moon with you all day long. If neither of those options are appealing, you can always PM me on here and we can totally gush about Sailor Moon for hours at a time. However, if you
do decide to join a community, I recommend you take the advice of others on this thread and don't go into the whole "Viz ruined SM for me" thing right away. First impressions are everything, after all.
I hate seeing a fellow Sailor Moon fan feel isolated from the community. For better or for worse, integrating myself with the fandom was one of the best things I've done because it's gained me a ton of friends that I cherish. Imo, that's what every fan should get out of the series.
