Disco Elysium - Insane Drunken Cop Simulator RPG GotY 2019

I didn't like the voice acting at first, but now I'm kind of getting into it. Usually voice acting in games annoys the piss out of me because I can read faster than listening (Pillars of Eternity was so bad i couldn't finish it), but I don't mind it as much in Disco Elysium because the voice acting is pretty good.

I started another playthrough to experience parts of the game I missed during my first time, but I just cannot bring myself to be anything but racist, apocalyptical, fascist law cop.

Anyone who hasn't played it yet, definitely pick it up. I've been bored of video games for years but this one actually hooked me.

EDIT: However, instead of all the voice acting and polish, I would've preferred a new DLC or new missions. LET ME EXPLORE THE PALE GODDAMNIT.
how can i be an effective racist in the game? so far im trying to be a facist supercop.

I played a while ago but wasn't the Pale some kind of lovecraftian void that'll kill you instantly or at least destroy your sanity?
There are ways to navigate it sorta-safely. I don't want to spoil too much, but if you really get the full low-down, explore the Church, Joyce, the Book about the Pale, and the Pale lady, they'll give you a lot of additional insight. You'll need a high level of conceptualization.

Blame all problems on immigrants, international finance, degenerate art. Just pretend you're living in the US.
They'll be plenty of chances just talk to people and you'll get a prompt.

The Church was in my opinion the best, most memorable quest in the game. But what was discovered there was rather... apocalyptic.

I'm glad I always wait a minimum of 12 months before picking up any Role Playing Game. It's been a trend for the last 25 years, at least, that on release they tend to be extremely buggy, often broken, and equally as often not feature-complete.
How's the full voice acting so far? I'm planning a playthrough next month, so I'd like to get your initial reactions, inquisitive friends.

The base-game voice acting was almost all fantastic where it existed, and it didn't bother me in the places that it wasn't present. Kim and the union boss especially have stellar performances, and that's a part of why I'm wary about them trying to shove voice acting everywhere: I'd rather have it be full of winners mixed with quiet than winners mixed with losers. I'm not a fan of the inner voices narrator even ignoring my scruples with what it does to the pacing, so that'll be frustrating.

Don't forget women

I really like it. I don't recall thinking any of the voice acting seemed out of place for the characters and it was well placed.

its annoying that you cant be a fascist or nationalist without the game attacking you and calling you a retard while, they do poke fun at socialism and communism, it still has a soft spot for these ideology. maybe beacuse it was not "real" socialism.

anyway, the game is getting a re-release this spring and will now be fully voiced. meaning all the traits will now be voiced which sounds cool but also horrifying at the same time. atleast i have an excuse replaying it when it comes out.
When people say DE is "nuanced" I think they are willfully forgeting this. When the game shows you facism or right wing ideolgoies it tells you outright that you're stupid and makes fun of both people and the ideology. With the socialism, they make fun of the people but NOT the ideology. It's a common tankie cope. That the ideology is fine. It's just people who muddle it. The people fail communism and it's so sad. If people all just stopped doing the wrong things then Communism would work. Ignoring that PEOPLE came up with the ideology in the first place. The murderer in the end turns out to a broken down old communist. But it's all his fault for letting communism break him. It never once says "I followed a stupid ideology and I paid for it. This ideology sucks" which it actually does do multiple times with the other ideologies. I guarantee the devs thought they were being amazing and thoughtful centrists like a lot of lefties do. But they can't help but show their bias and contempt for people who don't think like they do.

To those complaining about the new voice acting being everywhere, there are settings in the options to change that.

"Full" means every line is voiced more or less (the little pop up thoughts you get walking around the map aren't, some of the descriptors of actions alongside someone talking aren't, but you usually get a Foley noise of someone sighing or snorting or punching a table if that's the action described).

"Psychological" means all the external characters are voiced, but your internal dialogs are not, if you subscribe to the "thoughts are instant not a conversation in your head" kind of thing.

"Classic" is basically the original game's voice acting frequency, when only key lines are voiced.

They all use the new voice acting recordings though, so Dot Major's performance as Cuno is gone. (:_( The new voice actor is objectively better for accurately depicting a troubled 12 year old kid coming off of speed trapped in a hellish situation you can empathize with (after you punch). I have to admit its superior, but I'll nostalgically miss the original, inferior voice acting. It was extremely iconic.

The developers talked about the decision to make one voice actor say all the Skill's internal dialog in an article somewhere online (I read about it from second hand sources but never went to go find the article and look at it directly), I guess they were concerned that 24 different voice actors all screaming at you at once would have been hard to set the tone they wanted. Probably unspoken in that article would be how hard it would be to find 24 good fucking VAs, schedule them all in fun disease work times, make sure the audio quality was uniform and good working remotely, and probably even with the game's success all this might have been out of the small studio's budget.

Initially I was kinda put off with the one VA for all the skills, mostly because I had sort of invented how each talked in my head and it didn't line up, and it was weird to have these wildly different characters talk in the same deep voice with their conflicting viewpoints and behaviors, but I warmed to it eventually. I think its a different take on the protagonist, one that makes him seem more schizophrenic and fucked up, because its not different entities arguing in his head over whatever subject you're on, its just him. Your protagonist is now more like the crazy homeless guy living under a bridge inebriated and having a passionate argument with nobody but himself, except that hobo is now your local law enforcement, and been given a badge, a gun, and authority, all of which he may not be the best at holding onto. Its actually kinda scarier and more off putting when you inadvertently thought of the skills as different entities.

I bought the game during the holidays and got some hell bug where it would never launch or even tell you it crashed and couldn't google the remedy so I got it refunded. Maybe I give it another shot.

"Psychological" means all the external characters are voiced, but your internal dialogs are not, if you subscribe to the "thoughts are instant not a conversation in your head" kind of thing.
I can't believe they actually thought of this. Holy fuckamole this is exactly what I wanted and why I wanted it, and I never thought I'd see a studio actually cater to it.
With the socialism, they make fun of the people but NOT the ideology.
Can you people at least try to pretend you didn't alt-f4 at "racist lorry driver"?
(Why do you think they gave him 'racist' in the name specifically? Almost... almost like it would make whiny "I'm definitely not a racist but" people forcequit and complain about it.)

People think Communism was some crazy idea that had its comeuppance 40 years ago. A fever that shook the world, never to return again. They were right. Until *he* woke up today – a spiritual corpse responsive only to the call of Commodore Red, prostitutes, and Kras Mazov. For him, Communism is still a *thing*. Come, witness his attempt to rebuild Communism in the year '51!

0.000% of Communism has been built. Evil child-murdering billionaires still rule the world with a shit-eating grin. All he has managed to do is make himself *sad*. He is starting to suspect Kras Mazov *fucked him over* personally with his socio-economic theory. It has, however, made him into a very, very smart boy with something like a university degree in Truth. Instead of building Communism, he now builds a precise model of this grotesque, duplicitous world.

There's something you can’t get out of your head. Kras Mazov, the father of scientific communism, the Premier of the Communist Party of Shest and Graad during the Antecentennial Revolution, head of the Eleven Day Government, sideburn-toting, bearded figurehead of the movement... shot himself in the mouth? And died? One day in his cabinet, as things were collapsing around him? Just gave up? That's not good propaganda, is it? “Вe a communist, shoot yourself in the mouth.” Something about this irks you...

It's clearly a lie. Kras “Kak Ras” Mazov didn't shoot himself. Reaction was on the counter-offensive, the State Day Palace in Mirova was surrounded. He was either assassinated or died in the bombing. You might even have evidence to support this, somewhere in your brain. Mazov was never given a state funeral by the communists. Some people even say the body that was recovered from the ruins wasn't his. There. Good. Hero restored to glory. Carry on, comrade.

If you fail to grasp how these are jabbing at both the ideology and its adherents, you are a retard. If you really think that the final character isn't a fucking metanarrative on people obsessively clinging to increasingly irrelevant ideologies to tether themselves to both through personal failure and a changing world, you're retarded. How much do you need spoonfed? In dialogue with the soldier, the soldier directly states that his adherence to the old ideology - to communism - is why he refused to just surrender, refused to just serve prison time or give up the gamut.

The man literally never gives up on his belief and it turns him into a bitter, creepy, dejected, completely isolated stalker weirdo whose feverish insistence on the glory days gone by and the righteousness of his own ideas (which are a complete cover for the fact that he was simply jealous of young people enjoying themselves, despite the fact that he can't possibly grasp that his targets were just as dejected and miserable as he is)... very nearly causes the entire port town to collapse in on itself, and at the very least causes a massacre of people who are supposedly friendly to the ideas of socialism, ie the dock workers.

That you fail to see this as a critique of what the ideology does to people suggests you need everything stated point-blank. At no point does the game mark a demarcation between "what communism as an ideology does to people" and "what the ideology really actually really means;" you inserted that entirely yourself because you don't like that it made fun of you. Directly making fun of the "no true communism" schtick really should be enough to clue you in. There are nice people who support socialism/communism, yes; this is also true of Gary and his cryptofascism.

I also don't get that you're both bitching about "lefties aping thoughtful centrists" and simultaneously whining that your retarded worldview isn't getting a glamorous shine relative to all of the other ones. They owe you absolutely nothing because they find what you think retarded, yet they go out of their way to not just mock your retarded thoughts, but also their own retarded thoughts, libertarians' retarded thoughts, centrists' retarded thoughts, social-democrats' retarded thoughts... and it is still not enough.

Jesus Christ mate calm down. People are entitled to their own opinions about a media piece, especially if it's a complex one that can't be easily analyzed. The opinion that the game plays favourite is just as valid as it treating all ideologies with the same amount of disrespect.
I also don't remember if the game does the racism=right wing, or actually acknowledges that communism really likes to ethnically cleanse minorities when they are convenient scapegoats.

The suggestion is that it plays favorite with communism. The post points out that this is a retarded take unsupported by the game itself.

The revolutionary government (the commies) are talked about primarily in the past-tense, and the suggestion is mostly that the disorganized and ineffective interim government was too weak and too quickly beset by outside enemies (the coalition/EU) to do anything. Real-world communist governments tend to remove kebab in order to create 'social harmony,' which doesn't fit into the Revachol parable, though I never completed a full-commie run-through so I can't speak to completeness.

The common forms of racism that DE fixates on are primarily related to xenophobia - the lorry driver dislikes foreign competition and blames the coalition for it, Measurehead is the far-away dream of A&H, and Gary is the much more closeted guy that simply doesn't really like foreigners; Pierre is a 'traditionalist' character on that scale who basically just doesn't give a shit and just wants things back the way they were. Yet Gary and the Lorry driver are hardly deeply political figures, and Measurehead's obvious tether to far-right thinking is juxtaposed with the fact that he's under the employ of the socialist Evrart Claire. I think the communist soldier makes some reference to the fact that foreigners come in and have sex with native women, and I know that the foreign mercenaries hired by the Wild Pines group are effectively Coalition-state people who regard everyone around Revachol to be barbaric and subhuman. Communists are not outwardly discussed doing anything of this ilk, mostly because their existence was incredibly brief.

Very few communists are presented in-game, with most characters veering towards social democracy that lean that way - the union boss, the chill guy on the stairs, the workers, the lawyer - being directly implicated as covering up for a murder of a foreign agent. The Revolutionaries presented borrow from a lot of foreign examples, like taking the idea of Chavez's radio show ('Ask Revachol') or establishing French-revolution esque communes. The revolution's roots can be reflected most clearly either in the Russian or French instances of ailing, ineffective monarchy.

The communists wind up setting fire to oil wells, poisoning the environment to catastrophic degrees before they immediately scatter once the invaders arrive, meaning the Revolution crumbles at literally its first external obstacle. No-one looks good in this game, which is a central theme of its political analysis. It's the first time I feel a video game has made an actually deep and compelling narrative, so of course I'm going to simp for it - especially since so many of its critiques are "it called me dumb, but I didn't see it calling those other choices [that I didn't pick] dumb!"

I just got a sudden flashback to the mid naughts when I said Evangellion wasn't as deep as people thought it was and I got several essays that basically amounted to "Me am smart. You are stupid" . You may have a point but I'm not reading all that shit.

Berivity is the heart of wit you autist. No one cares you wrote an essay on a forum about stalking fat retards on the internet.
I hate to break it to you, but some people enjoy reading and writing - especially when you get to make fun of delicate retards getting offended that their political leanings were made fun of in a video game the same as everything else.

I'll break it down even further for you, though: you alt-f4'd at the racist lorry driver. Measurehead doesn't recant his racism, Evrart doesn't recant his socialism, Joyce doesn't recant her liberalism, the loyalist doesn't recant his loyalism, the communist doesn't recant his communism.

You made the rest of that shit up.

The post was a fraction of a dozens of hour game. It doesn't prove shit since the more important thing is what happens in the other 99.9% of the game. And even the quotes you made were entirely about the average commie who rewrites history and "not real communism" rather than about the ideology itself. And don't you dare say "you didn't read it properly" to try to excuse it.

It doesn't really support your point if, out of all politics, only communism doesn't have an ingame "face" that you can debate with. And racism is probably the game's weakpoint since it's presented as 100% evil and unjustified while also being linked to the right wing pretty regularly.
The communists wind up setting fire to oil wells, poisoning the environment to catastrophic degrees before they immediately scatter once the invaders arrive, meaning the Revolution crumbles at literally its first external obstacle. You are making a strawman to try to get away from having an actual argument. Also at least in the context of "nobody is looking good" it's the most smooth brain deep thunk that exists and it is neither deep nor new.

People who need to say "I am very smart" in an argument are neither capable of debate or as smart as they think they are. We see this crap with SJWs all the time. If you live in a bubble and aren't challenged you seem like the smartest person in the room.
