The Parks are, without a doubt, my favorite aspect of Disney these days. I had a family vacation planned for this year, too.
Seeing the words, "Closed indefinitely," makes me sad. It's pretty sobering as well, since Disney rarely ever closes their parks.
Crazy times we're living in.
It would have made me sadder years ago, back before the time when Disney stopped being 'that sentimental part of growing up' and became 'world-devouring ruthless empire'. Now I'm just feeling some mild schadenfreude. Bob Chapek must be crying himself to sleep every night knowing that when he finally ascended to the throne, he may be the last emperor as the empire falls.
I've sometimes wondered what would have happened if Eisner and Wells hadn't turned it around, and Disney had been broken up by corporate raiders back in the 80's. I imagine the parks would have been bought by Six Flags and would have just coasted along for years with no improvements or new rides, and lots of bitching about paying whomever bought the Studio and film library royalties for using those properties in the parks. But at the end of the day the parks would have gone on as fondly thought of parts of Americana and not symbols of an out of control all consuming company that underpays its employees.
I also feel a lot of fun schadenfreude over the creepy childless adult Disney theme park fans and Lion King/Robin Hood/Zootopia obsessed furries who are probably contemplating suicide over all of this, but that's not really Disney's problem, and probably belongs in another thread.
