Universal only has Potter due to urban legend saying that Disney pissed off Rowling so bad she went max fuck you to Disney.

I thought that what had happened was Disney was only willing to make a ride while Rowling wanted a whole park area to bring Hogwarts to life. I don't think she was pissed, just negotiations broke down and she found someone (Universal) all too happy to bring her work into the real world. Honestly, considering how much they cheaped out of what they promised with Star Wars (and they made BIG promises early on) she lucked out. Especially since people were initially disappointed with the Wizarding World when it first opened.

It's crazy that they would talk down to the woman who created the most important cultural IP of the last 30 years. If you ligned up all the HP books sold you can go around the earth. twice.
It's not about how good you think it is but you can't deny that it's HUGE.

Both Gravity Falls and Star Wars are treated like fucking royalty compared to what Lilo & Stitch got. Literally the only movie they made during the early 2000s that returned a profit at the box office, and how did they repay Chris Sanders for this gift? They turned it into a fucking Pokemon rip-off (while also releasing not that much merchandise for it - literally the ONLY reason that the show existed, and they couldn't even do THAT right) and made 2 Asian-centric series that didn't even have Lilo in them that much. That was my first "red-pill" when it came to Disney.

I feel like we can make a list of all the IP Disney has essentially destroyed or mistreated. I would say X-Men and Fantastic 4 are like the peak when it comes to current IP getting shat on. Fox wouldn’t hand over the rights, so Disney went mass sperg out on the IPs. Now they own them and have basically done jack shit to repair them. If it wasn’t for the MCU, Marvel in general would probably be dead under Disney as they have done little with the IP past movies. Shit on WB and their handling of DC, but at least they are smart enough to expand the brand as much as possible and really invest in tons of avenues for their characters. If that's true, that's fucking hilarious. I can totally see Disney execs trying the bigshot routine on a woman who has more money than the Queen of England. They probably had a Darth Vader bobblehead on their desk at the time and don't see it as a reminder of how brutally they butchered that IP the moment they got their filthy mitts on it. They're afraid to make another Star Wars movie because Solo bombed and Rise of Skywalker underperformed.

This happened before Disney bought Star Wars and Harry Potter hadnt released the last of the movies in the book series.

Star Wars and alot around its purchase was a reaction to Harry Potter world at Universal. A whole lot of the Star Wars land at Disney takes its cues from Harry Potter at Universal.

I never knew until now that Disney had ever planned on making an Oz-themed attraction (a book-accurate one that is….yes the utensil people are actually a thing in the series), and I’m slightly sad it never came into fruition.

I say slightly only because in hindsight I think it’s a good thing Disney never got a solid grasp on the Oz franchise. God knows that nowadays they’d suck the life out of it, milk it dry, and turn it into another soulless shell to consoom.

Speaking of which, I am happy to see that the RtO props are still in good condition here. I’m pretty disappointed Walter Murch (the director) got dealt such a bad hand with his film, he really proved to be an amazing director despite the shortcomings and low budget he and his team were given.

But hey, I’d rather stick with one, lovely hidden gem of a film instead of a bunch of big-budget cashgrabs.

For what it's worth, most people only know Oz as the Judy Garland movie and don't particularly know, or care, about the books. I think this is why it did so poorly at the box office, adults were expecting more Judy Garland-tier Oz material, and got something book accurate, which they found off-putting.
