You know if I knew there was at least some people at Disney who wouldn't fuck it up, I'd suggest they make an adaption of Brave Little Tailor as animated fare for boys. Self-assured Chad protagonist with smarts for little kids to look up to.

But then again they managed to fuck up The Snow Queen which would've been a slam-dunk fun adventure movie for girls that also placates feminists, so...

The classic Brave Little Tailor with Mickey is great and quite the comedy of errors. It's in color but before Mickey got the whites in his eyes, so it still has the charming old timey feel. I like when the giant rolls up Mickey in an enormous cigarette made from a bale of hay and tries to smoke him.

Rubbing salt on the wound. Not only puss in boot the last wish made more than pixar in the last five years. It's going to outgross Ant man and the wasp quantumania. Seeing shazam furry of the gods opening weekend. Puss in boots will probably outgross Shazam too. Capeshit is dying. Slowly but surely.

Shazam may still pull in an audience since it's not Marvel. Movie theaters are still hoping to coast on capeshit, so the amount of cope when/if it still pulls in less-than-anticipated numbers is going to be satisfying.

At least there's still John Wick, but with Phase 5 not bringing in that kind of money, I don't exactly know what'll be the blockbuster hit of the year.

I understand Hanlon's Razor, but there is a point where incompetence and stupidity are impossible and it just has to be malice. I wouldn't be surprised if they tell her that everything looks great and once she's out of earshot, they burst out laughing.
I feel like it is and it isn't. They just aren't trying, but they will pick up incompetent minority hacks they can pay peanuts to net ESG money while churning out shitty movies with the least amount of money and effort possible, and if people call them out on it they can just demonize them as ontologically evil racists.

Well, looking ahead at the year's releases...that's a good question. Here's a quick rundown of the big and big-ish stuff coming out each month (Disney movies in bold):
  • March: Shazam 2, John Wick 4, D&D
  • April: Mario, Renfield, Evil Dead 5, Peter Pan (D+)
  • May: GotG 3, Fast X, The Little Mermaid
  • June: Spider-verse 2, Transformers 6, The Flash, Elemental, Indiana Jones 5
  • July: Insidious 5, Mission Impossible 7, Oppenheimer, Haunted Mansion
  • August: TMNT, Blue Beetle
  • September: The Equalizer 3, Expendables 4
  • October: Kraven the Hunter, Saw X
  • November: Dune Part 2, The Marvels, The Hunger Games prequel, Wish
  • December: Ghostbusters 5, Aquaman 2
There will probably be other movies out too, but these are the biggest I see on the list, and even some of those are debatable (I included Renfield solely due to Nic Cage). It's a ridiculous amount of sequels, and I can't say most of this list appeals to me. Capeshit will probably continue to do well enough even if it's not doing pre-coof numbers, though I think GotG 3 is probably the only Marvel movie that has an appeal to normies. As for non-capeshit, my money's on MI7 and Dune 2; I wouldn't necessarily sleep on Nolan, but a biopic about Oppenheimer might be a hard sell for general audiences, especially after Tenet befuddled them.

I don't think Disney has a single movie on their slate this year that looks like a blockbuster aside from GotG 3. Brie Larson remains box office poison, and I can't imagine anyone's interested in the adventures of a geriatric Indiana Jones, especially if it turns out as disastrous as the leaks suggest. As for animation, it's Pixar's latest "what if X was alive" movie, and a movie that's an origin story for the wishing star, because people really needed that apparently? It's a pretty bad slate on the whole, not helped by the continued lack of Star Wars content and still being nearly two years from Avatar 3.

Fucking cry, the problem is Disney is hemorrhaging so much money atm that the course is unsustainable. They still owe something like 50 billion for the FOX acquisition ffs, which is nearly a third of their net worth. They still owe money to Hulu too, they owe 9.3 billion to Comcast. Disney too only profited 23 billion (2022) their costs though keep rising last year's annual expenses/costs were 78 billion (up 15% from 2021)

They must owe so much for acquisition that at this point they cannot buy anymore because they acquire their debt. Experts and the public warned them of this though and the other issues their films keep bombing whilst merch sales etc decrease.
Remember how they were going to make all the moneys with Star Wars... 10 years ago was it? Yeah, that shit aged like the finest milk. And everything after that just compounded on top. The day Disney stops being useful as a propaganda piece due to it's costs and it explodes into 20 companies will be glorious (if it ever happens)

I hate it when a redhead cartoon character gets Blackwashed, and they give her this nasty yellowish-brown imitation of orange hair when the original didn't even have orange hair, but pure red.
(Also, that dress looks like a nightgown or old-timey underwear. Why isn't the thing in her hair blue?)

Like damn if you're gonna make it inaccurate at least make full use of that, especially for a fantastical tropical mermaid. Or leave it black rather that make it such an unflattering shade.

It's sad that some random girls can do a better job than Disney.

Also, her dreads look nasty af, not helped by the fact that some of her hair is loose, but the dreads themselves also look bad, I think her hair might be too straight to work well.
Like isn't this girl supposed to be a princess? Why is her 'protective hairstyle' so half-assed? Where are the accessories? Just because she's black doesn't mean she has to look like a peasant. Such a lost opportunity for both fantasy underwater fashion as well as African royalty fashion.

The movie that saved Disney, yet the live action version is probably the most soulless one yet.

Some wardrobe person is either being paid way to much or way to little.

I've heard. In fact I've been wondering if there's an English version of the comics that the video game "Disney's P.K. Out of the Shadows" is based on. I've been told there was a fan translation in the works but I don't recall where to find it.

(I believe that game is based on Paperinik New Adventures but you might want to double-check. I never played the game, I just like the idea of a comic where Donald Duck is secretly a costumed vigilante. I also find myself wondering if Paperinik ever had a crossover with Darkwing Duck).
it is, I actually got the book on the shelf. as for translations there are apparently official ones: https://inducks.org/comp.php?mode=6&c=I+PKNA+
each story has an entry in which language it is available. there might also be some fan-translations, since some are only available in certain countries depending how it sold and when it was canceled.

don't think there ever was a crossover with darkwing duck, kinda like tailspin being it's own thing.

the thing that surprised me when I looked into it a while back is that you burgers simply don't get most of the stuff euros produce and read, always expected it would at least end up in english since disney is an english brand. I've sperged about it in another thread before, but actual disney comics over here go back decades, and they're quite successful. pretty much every kid has read those, since they're cheap and actually fucking good (probably because they're not made by disney america, but dunno if they have become pozzed in the meantime). for example in krautland you got a monthly 250-page book with several stories for like 5 bucks, imagine it like disney doing shonen jump (or any manga collection): cheap to produce, low price, good stories. and that's the ones in addition to the micky mouse magazine coming out every 2 weeks (which in format are similar to burger capeshit comics).

this also means kids over here have (or had at least) quite a different perception of mickey and disney in general. I'd go as far and say donald over here is as big as mickey mouse, if not bigger, and those comics being a big reason. PKNA is a reboot, the original duck avenger story goes all the way back to 1969. that's also why darkwing duck over here is kinda... redundant. the character is still fun and everything, but mainly limited to cartoons, comics are all duck avenger (especially since cartoons are usually produced in america, so europe doesn't have access to make them with their characters even if they wanted too - although some french duck avenger cartoon could be fucking ace now thinking about it).
over in europe almost all the disney characters got extended and built upon. duck avenger happened because readers wanted donald not constantly get shat on, the first version he was more like a mean robin hood fucking with scrooge, before he became a crime fighter proper (with the help of gyro gearloose). they didn't write a new character like darkwing duck, but gave donald more traits, and his unlucky persona everyone knows is just the public identity. he also worked as a secret agent, both in a johnny english and literally suave bond version (not making this up)

same goes for mickey, which is now kind of a police consultant like sherlock holmes, with it's own rogue's gallery and everything.

another thing, when I said good stories I mean actually fucking good. they put way more effort in the characters and stories, and they are expected to be more sophisticated. for example what they did (and it's mostly italians, which are the same that invented duck avenger) is put them in all kinds of different stories. there have been quite a few parodies of literature works with disney characters, this is one of the most famous and popular ones:

uk_lc_11b_001.jpeg

it's hard to make out, but it's a parody of les misrables of all things. there's also war and peace and fucking hamlet (and plenty more). that's the kind of high brow stuff you can expect in euro disney stuff.
others are time travel stories where mickey (and goofy) help out two professors who invented a time machine and want to find out things. iirc the first story was about who was the mona lisa, so they write a funny little story around it.
other's are literal isekai where mickey and goofy end up in a fantasy land, or in space, often recurring. just look at @Registration's post to see what I mean.

also checking some stuff I've seen there's now an outright disney comic line for adults. haven't looked into it but kinda curious if it's just reprints or it's own thing like the stuff I posted earlier.

TLDR: europe has it's own disney ecosystem they never brought over to the anglosphere, which would be easy as fuck since all they'd have to do is translate it.

also not necessary disney related, but if you want to read some fucking good comics check out some eurocomics, even the classics from decades ago still hold up (blake & mortimer for example, or something more lighthearted like spirou)

EDIT: But what you should really be telling me is where I can find more of my man Ludwig von Drake.
https://inducks.org/character.php?c=LVD&c1=date - if you think that's not enough, check the bottom.

He's not wrong unfortunately--Willow tends to not be remembered fondly unless you're talking about either the arcade game or the NES one.

It's not a perfect movie but god damn, I enjoyed it. And I feel like its beyond criticism in a day and age where people somehow hold up Jackson's Lord of the Rings films as classics.
never met anyone who dislikes the film. might be a non-burger thing, like no one outside the states ever heard of the princess bride, maybe some bongs.

Wait, they don't have these in the US??? Seriously?? :O

If that's true then the poor burgers are missing out on fantastic comics. Many stories are so great, you still remember them as an adult even if you haven't read the comics for like 20 years. My favorite book is number 222.

(The First Olympic Champ)

It includes a fantastic adaption of Lord of the Rings. For me it's one of the best stories if not the best.

I don't say this because I'm a LotR fan. Well I am but when I read it as a child I didn't know anyhing about LotR but I loved this comic. Only when the first movie came out I put 2 and 2 together.

He has been as costumed viligante since the late 60s. There are lots of comics about his alter ego (Paperinik in italian, Phantomias in german).
