You just reminded me of something - there was some guy who wrote a history of Disney under Eisner who criticized A Goofy Movie for, of all things, giving Goofy depth. What a betrayal it was, he thought, to make happy ol' Goofy depressed and self-reflective...

I've always had a soft spot for A Goofy Movie. I remember watching it a lot as a kid and looking back, it's a really sweet little film. It's not one of the main blockbusters like the other films of the 90's but you can tell there was way more effort and heart put into it than there needed to be. Which is weird because yeah. Goofy. But it's still true.

I liked how he's a concerned father as well in the film, especially in how he discovers what Max was doing behind his back on the trip.

No. Those are legitimate books; this was an Internet thing written long ago when people were demanding Eisner resign. The author of the thing had a particular hatred for all of Disney's TV efforts - especially the ones with any beloved characters in them.

That guy has to be some kind of turbo-sped to not want Goofy to be more than a goof. While Goofy has always been my favourite of the big 3, there really is a reason he never had as big of a comics presence as the other two. It's hard to send someone that, dumb, naive, and oblivious on adventures, without someone for him to play off of and drive him to adventure, at which point he's not the lead in the way Donald or Mickey is. Even Goofy movie is more about Max, though it clearly is about both of them and their relationship. Goofy is even the one behind the central conflict, being Max lying about the roadtrip to seem cool. It's got to be my favourite depiction of Goofy as he's probably the most relatable in it. In the very least, he's the most fleshed out. To restate my thesis, anyone who dislikes this version of Goofy is a turbo-sped

I think A Goofy Movie was better than almost everything else that came out in the latter half of the 90's (Mulan being the only exception), and I have fond memories of watching it. Goofy in A Goofy Movie (and to a similar extent Goof Troop) is, for me, a lot better than 90% of the classic shorts featuring or starring Goofy because he was more than just some guy that trips and falls down a hill/gets everyone else in trouble.

I haven't seen it, but all I know is that it was enough of a bomb to warrant the closure of the animation studio at Disney-MGM Studios in Florida. (It's sad knowing that whole facility has been reduced to some half-assed Star Wars exhibit)

I saw it in the theater, and it was bad. Really bad. I mean the plotlines of the direct to video Land Before Time sequels bad.

There are those who do think that way about the way Goofy was handled in those projects, while others rather they stick to the 40's Goofy who was all there was with his character.

I think we already mentioned this before, but there's a good podcast out there of the directors of this that went into how it got made and why everyone hates it (and for being touted as Disney's last 2D movie).

I really like it. Now, that could be due to it being the first Disney film I remember seeing in theatres, but to me it's just really fun. Alameda is one of the best Disney villains post Renaissance, though his song is pretty stupid( like his sidekicks); the plot makes no sense, but the idea of literal cow girls amuses me; it looks really nice, in places similar to an early road runner cartoon, and I can't think of any places full of bad CGI exceot maybe the Minecraft scene; Buck and Yellow cow are legitimately annoying but everyone else endears themselves to me.

If I remember correctly from some DVD commentary or documentary or something, the original idea was to have a Ghost Pied Piper, which would have made more sense and more plausible for cows to stop. I do have a theory that Disney purposefully sabotaged Home on the Range, and later Winnie the Pooh, on purpose to justify no longer making traditionally animated movies. No one would think it's a good idea to release anything the same weekend as the Last Harry Potter movie, a sensation amongst all ages. It would also explain the reduced public appeal of Home on the Range.

There are some deleted scenes that in my mind would've made the film better.

In this scene we get an alternative explanation for why Slim wants all the cows

This scene features an alternative opening where Mariachi Butterflies would give exposition through out the story.

I personally really like it, but most of the songs aren't great. I do like the bear fishing song though.

I felt it was pretty boring and forgettable. I only watched it once.

While I generally agree with this, I feel all the scenes with Sidka (Wolf brother) in the middle are pretty exemplary. He's truly sympathetic, and truly threatening. He really wants to kill Kenai and Koda, and I love that. Rarely to you have a truly threatening Disney Villain.

The movie was originally titled "Sweatin' Bullets" and the original idea was to have a central human figure who was sent out west to a cattle drive who winds up in a situation with a ghost villain of sorts. This early draft of the film was apparently shot down by Eisner who thought the film was about cows and ask to have it be about one, so they had it be about a calf name "Bandit" instead but tried to keep the ghost villain in there but the original directors simply couldn't get past the initial changes since they were so hung up on their original idea so they had a change in production (just like with "Empire of the Sun" become "The Emperor's New Groove"). A new set of directors gave us the movie we ended up with out of a whim of making the cows the heroes of their own story and as an antithesis on the Western genre. Even one of the directors said they were making a "Woolie Reitherman Stupid Movie" in this respect of not going for the same approach Disney had been using during the 90's with their tops like Beauty & The Beast, Aladdin and others.

I did see this on the big screen twice, because I didn't realize they did a rather clever bit of cinematography with widening the aspect ratio when the main character becomes a bear.
