I'll say the same thing I did in the Dobson thread; Ariel's skin color wasn't relevant to the movie so changing it isn't a big deal IMO, but it would be so much better if they actually put forth the effort to make a new character that was black because just changing established characters feels like an afterthought. This is Disney just trying to get some political brownie points so folks will come see yet another pointless remake nobody wanted.

There are fairy tales from other cultures they could make adaptions of to have more racial diversity in their line-up, but they're more interested in something quick that takes no effort.
 
The Little Mermaid has always been my least favorite of the Disney movies so I couldn’t care less. But this is some manufactured controversy that gets butts in seats for a bland half-hearted reproduction.
 
I was just taking a peek on the /r/movies thread, and by the looks of it, not even the normies are pleased. Take a gander.

And go here if you want to read everything that was removed by the mods. Again, it looks like this movie might have just struck a nerve with the normies, let's see how this develops.

Same, I couldn't care less about Disney animated movies, but their blackwashing might be too much, even for the normies it seems.
 
I love classic Disney but as as soon as we entered the 21st century Disney has mostly shit the bed for whatever reason.

It started with their movies flopping and that stupid California adventure theme park, then Eisner was ousted and for a while new life was seemingly breathed into the company, only for Iger to now fuck it up too.

For whatever reason Disney as a whole just seems so intrinsically tied to the 20th century, "Disney" as something that actually means something is probably dying to be brutally honest, it's just turning into another media conglomerate.

What we need is a new Disney for the 21st century, someone with the same vision and integrity as Walt Disney himself had, nothing lasts forever and that's sad, but the silver lining is the past can serve as a guideline for our future, so while things may die like the proverbial Phoenix from the ashes, new, beautiful things can still arise.

Same. Always thought The Little Mermaid was one of Disney's weaker 2D animation offerings. That said, assuming mermaid skin (well, the human half of it) is the same as ours, wouldn't it stand to reason that a whole race/species that lived underwater all their lives would evolve over the years to be light-skinned? Science fans are welcome to set me straight on this one.

I wouldn't mind this if such a "new Disney" manages to get off the ground this century and manages to stay within the principles it's founder has without becoming the media giant of the last one.

If the top half has human skin then we wouldn't be able to tell what their skin color was because after so much constant immersion in salt water it would have sloughed off.
 
Cast a minority actress in a previously Caucasian role for the sake of pandering, get a "any criticism directed towards this movie and its casting is just racist" green card and headpats from diversity advocates for "caring" about diversity while not actually having to come up with anything new. The Mouse knows what he's doing.

Maybe I'm just a big bad internet fascist troll, but to me, casting minorities in previously white roles (or women in male roles like with Ghostbusters 2016) for the purpose of tokenism seems much more disingenuous than actually coming up with new stories involving non white characters.

This is sad on so many fucking levels. Aquafina is literally locally bottled tap water sold by Pepsi. Why not name yourself after a decent fucking brand at the very least?
