Do you care about (your characters) gender when you play a game?

It depends on if male or female characters get better outfit/armor options. I usually make characters in an RPG I am going to spend dozens, potentially hundreds of hours in, so I want to have some eye candy to look at before I get some good end game armor. There is also some instances of women and men getting different outcomes or quests, companions whatever so in these cases I usually play the game at least twice either way to experience everything.
 
In the first Titanfall, female pilots had a smaller hit box, so I always played as a female pilot for that reason only.

If there's no advantage though, I'll typically go with whatever character I think looks cool. I never try and make a character look like me, unless it was one of the few games that used Xbox avatars, where I did try and make my avatar look a bit like me at least.

I'm not trans, and I always pick either male or female characters, not some bullshit "non-binary" or in-between option.

If there is no choice at all, then all that really matters is if the game is good. I would never pass on playing a highly rated game cos I can't play as X or Y, unless I was forced to play as a troon, lol, but that's never going to happen.
 
No unless the character is just uninteresting or unappealing see practically every DEI game in existence as an example. If we are talking about games with a character creator then most of the time I'll usually make a female for games that don't focus on story or mmos. However games similar dragon age origins, fallout ect I'll play every race and sex to see how the world/story changes.
 
I tend to always pick female but I don't personify myself as a character and I don't romanticize my own character
 
Playing as a female character in an online game is just weird if you're a dude. If I see a bimbo character and hear a male voice, I automatically assume it's a troon.

Women get more cosmetic choices of varying styles. Boring long haired stacy, butch bitch, rugged but also long hair, 50 kinds of ponytails.

Men? Short or long pants. Long or short sleeves. Full beard and soyboy topknot, buzz cut, bald, or lumberjack. Very few games manage to make otherwise feminine options that are still "would fuck your girl"

On that note, every single person i'd ever seen play a female orion in STO has ended up being a troon. Frankly i'm not surprised they'd pick that particular species given the whole oversexualized orion slave girl/whore thing. Fits troon coomer mentality to a T. On the other hand, the only people i've ever seen playing a female sith inquisitor in SWTOR has been male. Seems like its a common thing for that particular class given it makes the most sense given how the inquisitor storyline goes. Its low key implied that the character is intended to be a female human, much like the imperial agent is strongly implied is supposed to be a male chiss. Nevermind the fact that sending a chiss of all people as an infiltrator stands out like a sore cock and practically screams 'this guy is an imperial' but thats another discussion
 
I think if male - or female have an advantage, they're the obvious choice.
But, to reiterate, I'm asking if you get angry if the character you're playing doesn't align with your IRL self - does that upset you?
Emphasis on the getting upset part.
