Doom Patrol

I'm also put off by the recurrent use of Drag Queens as some symbolism for the unaccepted of society. Is there anything more celebrated than drag queens in current media? Because I'm struggling to think of it.

I loled in the most recent episode at how the trannies were so oppressed because some dumb kids were graffiting on top of their graffiti. It just made them look whiney and pathetic, not oppressed or downtrodden. Especially after being completely unable to defend Danny when the weirdo comic villain appeared.

Also that whole episode made no sense at all. Why was the villain from the comic there, but the hero wasn't until Dorothy magiced her into being?

So just watched episode 6. In amongst all our finding fault the old magic isn't entirely gone. There's still fun to be had. I liked the ending and for some reason I have a soft-spot for them ending with Mud's Dyna-mite and the Zombie butt clawing its way out of the freezer. I have a pet peeve which is people leaving doors open. Always used to bother me in Doctor Who with the Tenth Doctor run where he was always walking away from the TARDIS without pulling the door closed. I had to mentally tell myself that the door would automatically close in order to not be bugged by it for the rest of the show. So it's kind of rewarding to me to see someone leave a door open and there actually be consequences. OCD wins!

Michelle Gomez's character is growing on me again. She's a good actress and it's sad to see the character's guilt and trauma in the more serious moments.

There's a weird subtext with Cyborg's sub-plot about being from Detroit with some very explicit statements about "you will always be from here" and who he is never changing which I don't really like. As someone who very much believes you CAN leave behind where you're from I am reacting quite badly to a show telling me I need to belong to "my people" because of where I happen to be born. We may not always be able to compel a group to accept us but we can choose where we want to belong and what cultural values we own. This show seems to have an explicit message of your origins and, subtext race, define you. I actively dislike that and it's turning me off the show more than any drop in energy in this series is. Ditto I'm not entirely sure about Jane's use of "chodes" as an insult. Isn't that a Left Wing Progressive insult for Right Wing / Patriot types? If it isn't, that's the only place I've heard it. Anyway, the subtext of "you're Black / from the Ghetto, therefore that's your people" is really needling me in this show.

Well, looks like we're coming to a sad end to a formerly fun show. After a long hiatus that occurred abruptly mid-season, it's returned and is slowly sliding downwards to its denouement. I don't have it in me to write a real eulogy to it. Character development has largely been synonymous with becoming more boring. Crazy Jane, we haven't seen her multiple identities for sometime. She's just Jane now and I can't even recall the last time she used a power. Cliff is trapped in a stagnant immaturity, never stopping being crass but also having lost the charm of his initial anger. Larry is just... there. A dull boyfriend arc provoking the only real response from me - a flick of my finger to fast forward through any male-male kissing. Rita still has a little fire. A nice exchange between her and Madame Rouge: Rouge - "I've never thought of you as a monster." Rita - "That's because in our friendship the monster was always you." But the whole thing bar the very occasional spark (usually Rita), is just flat.

The last episode was even a musical episode, and still didn't raise a smile. It can probably best be summed up by referencing the sex ghosts who are given corporeal form to provide chorus and backing dancers. A blobby, pasty, deeply physically unattractive bunch in faux-sexy corsets, that I couldn't find less to do with "sex" if I tried.

There are two episodes to go, I think. I genuinely wouldn't recommend anybody bother if anybody is still with this in Season 4.

I completely skipped through the musical episode, because I hate musicals.

The first season was focused, funny and interesting. Each season has ramped up the "zaniness" but had less and less interesting plots.

I could barely remember what was going on this season and had to look it up to remind myself.

You're right, the show just isn't fun any more.

I stopped watching after they tackled the whole dad in Jane's head.

The whole concept of the show seemed fun at first, but it's novelty has run out fast. It's just boring to watch.

A team of antiheroes works and it's an unique idea, but it's overstayed its welcome far too long...
