DOOM

Bethesda sucks ass and their stupid account system is an extremely unwelcome intrusion. however, I'm a simp for Doom and the soundtrack and new WAD are cool, I also appreciate that they shipped it with SIGIL (not SIGIL II though?) and it's also a totally free upgrade. but it is sad that this port is obviously inferior to gzdoom and feels kind of shit control-wise IMO. KEX is a great engine, but the source ports made for the classic Dooms have become so robust and well-made that there's no competition. I hope they give this treatment to Quake 4 next, the last of the classic id stable that actually needs it.

as a side note, apparently the community mod browser (which I haven't fucked with as it's locked behind the Bethesda account sign-in) is effectively unmoderated, causing massive butthurt about proper crediting and blah blah because web 1.0's spirit of free sharing is dead. also there's apparently no file vetting, as you can upload WADs that require zscript to work, causing the game to crash since KEX doesn't support it:

A popular mod called MyHouse.wad is listed in the browser, for example, and it requires capabilities that the remaster does not include. Sure enough, it crashes when you start playing (something of a shame, considering MyHouse.wad is an extraordinary work of horror). The main gripe remains for this mod too: it has been uploaded not by its original author Steve "Veddge" Nelson but by a user called "MrMysteryMan76", who writes in the description: "This is not my mod. You can find the origional [sic] on the doomseeker website."

I went and bought Doom 64 cuz it was on sale for $2 on Steam and I got to admit I'm not a fan.

Too slow paced and way to many switch puzzles that completely grind the game to a halt as my old ass brain struggles to figure out what to do. I wanted more Doom 2 but got Doom 3 shit instead. oh well it was only 2 bucks.

Do dig the new chainsaw though.

The first few levels are a grind but once you get the BFG around level 8 it gets a lot better. I even died a few times which surprised me. The big flaw of Doom 64 is that the monster variety isn't as good as Doom 2.

heres a bunch of lost wolfenstien 3d content that went under the radar because 1 dude had it from what I can see.
I know this looks fake but I can assure you its real, allegedy was found from extremely ancient bbs forums so take with a grain of salt my bad lol.

My favorite mod so far is "Double Impact." It has a unique style of avoiding the spamming of tanky enemies while having big and complex maps. You can move through quickly busting into new area after new area (which is what I loved about Wolfenstein 3d). Edit: And it has good enemy placement as well.

An honorable mention would be "Epic 2," but I didn't finish it because they started spamming cyber demons. The first 20 or so levels were a lot of fun.

Relatively new mod added to DOOM 1+2, Rylayeh. Maps are arduous but good. The best part for me is the curated soundtrack that echoes Wolfenstein 3d OST; more of a trance-inducer than adrenaline-pumper. Screenshots:

I remember hearing Ultima VIII music from one of the levels of Rylayeh, it fits the ambiance of the setting. Doom maps with Lovecraft elements are a treat for me. I know that Lovecraft horror isn't about guns-a-blazin' but this is Doom we're talking about.

Another old Lovecraft-themed map that I can think of is Beyond Kadath. https://www.moddb.com/games/doom-ii/downloads/rylayeh-by-j-s-graham

I was playing a mod called "Strain." It's quite good. The maps cleverly loop back and intersect into itself (like quake), they don't spam heavy demons so it doesn't turn into an arena dance-off, and there's thoughtful enemy placement (no holding down the mouse button in the level editor to spam enemies calling it a "slaughter map"). I'm a bunch of levels in and they don't even give you a rocket launcher or plasma rifle yet, which is fine with me.
