DOOM

Looks like the 2nd DLC will be the end of DOOM for the time being. Probably moving onto rebooting Quake, which is fine as long as it's Quake 1 instead of the Strogg again. Although in my dreams they somehow get the rights from Bungie and reboot Marathon instead.

Hugo's said repeatedly that there's "more stories to tell in the Doom universe" and that they "haven't made the best Doom game yet". Plus MS has been pushing Doom pretty hard in marketing since they acquired Zenimax.

I'm starting to lean more towards them doing a prequel next, seems like the most logical thing based on everything I've seen/heard from the devs.

Is it just me, or does The Ancient Gods kinda suck? I know I'm making a bit of a snap decision here, I haven't even beaten the first level yet, but in that first level, I've had more demons spawn on top of me and more fall-respawns into the middle of a gang of assholes then I encountered in the entire base game - And the base game isn't great with spawning in the first place. I went from being totally pumped that I managed to defeat the Icon of Sin without calling in sentinel armor to alt-F4ing in abject frustration in less than an hour, and I died WAY more versus the Icon. Something about this level is just antifun to me.

TAG was designed to be challenging to people who can comfortably clear endgame content. It gets pretty frustrating at times. Personally, Level 1 I found reasonable all around, Level 2 was annoying, Level 3 was punishing to the point where I started approaching the ragequit threshold. Specifically that one fight on the bridge.

I recommend against trying to clear it in one sitting. Don't feel bad about putting it down and trying again later. Overall it's the kind of content that has to 'click' for you to really enjoy it; sometimes that only happens when you walk away from it for a while.

The final boss was more punishing than the nightmare bridge for me.

I also recommend playing it on a lower difficulty your first time through. I played on Hurt Me Plenty my first go-round which I think is why I had a smoother experience than most.

I refused to go down from Ultra-Violence; Sat through all of Ancient Gods in one sitting. Samur can go die in a hole with his Spirit and lasers bullshit, felt SO damn satisfying to beat his ass finally.

Oh good. It gets worse.

Oh dear. I already am.

Anyone else hoping we get a skin with this one that’s more baroque in style? Something more warhammer-esque. The Dark Lord looks like a full-on chaos champion in that armor, and we’re getting a thunder hammer, so I think it’d fit quite well.
Speaking of that, what’s everyone’s favorite Doomguy skin? I’m partial to the 2016 suit.

Either gimme the 2016 suit or OG suit, any others just looks off to me.

Unless it's the Dark Lords armor. That shit looks CASH.

I would strongly recommend revisiting the main campaign and practicing a bit. Ideally, you want to be at the point where you can clear a level in Nightmare without losing more than a life or two. There's a surprising amount of flexibility to the combat loop, and like I said previously it can take quite a bit of time for it to all "click" where you figure out what loadouts and weapon combos work best for you. If you want some primers on how to up your game, Under the Mayo has some good tips and tricks distributed throughout his channel. His videos get granular to a fault at times, but there's a lot of useful information for people who understandably don't have the time to figure out every fine detail of the game themselves.

The bridge got me seven shades of asshurt; the final boss was a bit tricky but felt reasonable, given that you got checkpoints in between phases. Still challenging, but not quite as tear-out-your-hair infuriating as the previous arena. It reminded me a lot of how Vega Core upstaged Argent D'Nur as the most hectic level in the game for Doom 2016. I still remember my first time clearing that train station on Nightmare...

Unpopular opinion, but I actually like the Icon of Sin in Classic Doom.

Second unpopular opinion, but I like the Pistol as a starting weapon and I don't like how Doom Eternal and Brutal Doom remove it.

This is the main part of my problem. I like the super shotgun, the chain gun, and the plasma rifle, in that order. You might have noticed the issue already - I like the ammosinks. I spend so much time out of ammo (for everything I'm competent with), looking for a lone weakling I can use my single chainsaw charge on.

The rocket launcher is useless except for very specific lock-on weaknesses. I suspected it the entire game, but the Icon proved it to me. I used to like the basic shotgun quite a lot, but endgame enemies shrug off everything but a perfectly aimed grenade to a destructible spot. The sniper rifle is good, but I'm not. I can only use it in conjunction with the slow time rune. The ballista is neat, but the plasma rifle outclassed it handily 90% of the time, and that was before I got the blast mastery that gives you buffed shots.

I'll watch some of those videos you linked, but I strongly suspect I'm not missing much, I just need to get good.

The rocket’s remote detonation allows you to stagger enemies to line up more focused things like a precision bolt or ballista shot, and does respectable damage on its own. The original shotgun’s automatic mod actually outdamages the super shotty and gives back ammo when you kill something with it, but you have to set it up with a stagger or ice bomb. The microwave beam stuns after you let go of it and lets you check the health of an enemy to determine what gun you should use next.

People complained the IoS was just a painting and I'm like "what do you think an icon IS?"

I believe later versions of Brutal Doom added back a pistol but it's a weapon you have to pick up.
