There is a learning curve and I do agree in the beginning of the game, ammo management is a pain, so having to constantly chainsaw kill is a bit annoying. Though as the game goes on, especially when you get your weapon upgrades, and gauge your personal playstyle, it begins to translate very nicely. I played on Nightmare mode and I will have to say that the level of challenge is a nice change in the industry. It never feels cheap, it all is skill, and how well you understand the Doomslayers tool set.
For me the ammo management feels a lot better as I get better at swapping between single shot weapons; the more I distribute between ammo types the more efficient and less disruptive the chainsaw breaks are. In that regard the changes to the assault rifle's scope were a real game changer; firing a single shot weapon then quickly swapping to a different weapon to circumvent the passive reload is one of the best carryovers from 2016; turning a superheavy into swiss cheese by firing off four separate weapons in the span of 5 seconds is ridiculously satisfying.
Also, I love that cracking sound when you fire from the scope.
