DOOM

Beat Doom Eternal on Nightmare and went back to 2016 and played through on Nightmare again. Was interesting to see the contrast. I do think the combat loop in Eternal is more fun overall. The Super Shotgun in 2016 was hilarious once mastered but it killed weapon balance since ammo was plentiful and double tapping demons to death made fights easy.

I'd like to get good with the doom eternal and 2016 on PC, but i'm entirely new to PC as whole so in between fat fignering, forgetting key binds, and not being good at aiming yet; I've barely managed to beat the cyber demon in Doom 2016. Am I the only one getting Hillary Clinton vibes from that demon worshipping chick btw? I'd appreciate any tips you guys can toss my way in regards to getting good with PC.

Rebind your keys to something that works for you and take the time to get used to it. Also get a mouse with those thumb buttons and bind weapons to those too. Beyond that if you're trying to get good there's no other answer but practice.

yeah i've slowly been doing that, I went from wasd to esdf to have more room for weapons to quick swap, so i'm slowly getting the hang of it, but my aim with the mouse is still pretty bad. I did get a razer viper ultimate, a little small in the hand but it's pretty light. I mapped the chainsaw and melee to the side buttons, and nade to the wheel. I'm at 800 dpi and 1 in game, I got all the mouse settings done right on windows as well, I suppose it really does just come down to muscle memory and practice now.

After playing both Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal, I find 2016 to be far better made. I like that Doom Eternal added in some cool features like fighting on Earth, Battlemode, new gadgets, destructible monster weapons, and brought back Doom 2's mounters. But Doom 2016 had training mode bots you could spar with if you aren't up to fighting humans, SnapMap, and took less space on my HD.

Flame Belch is cool and all, except you need to use it. A lot. It doesn't seem to do damage; just makes it so damage done to the enemy set on fire drops armor like monsters from the Quake 3 Arena mod known as the "Hunt Mod" (that mod is a lot of fun IMO). The parkour is not necessarily a bad thing to have in the game, but Eternal fucked up by shoehorning these mechanics in to the point where they were less novel and cool, but a pain in the ass that made me switch to 2016 just so I wouldn't have to do it anymore. Eternal seems to be for the "hardcore gamers", but 2016 was the one I find more fun. And after 2016 had bot support I got Eternal hoping Battlemode at least had bot support. As far as I could tell, it doesn't even have that. How could someone call Doom Eternal an improvement when the devs utterly gutted the multiplayer/skirmish when that is like half the game itself?

In the Doom community, that's apparently an unpopular opinion because most of these new Doom players don't want to use SnapMap or other map editors to make fun custom user content, but play a game of "do the choreographed dance to not die". I'm not having a good time, what's the point of playing?

If you want to find people who agree with that mindset I highly recommend /v/, if you mention that you like Eternal there you’ll have 10 different people telling you to fuck off to Reddit

Doom Eternal is a heavily overrated game that honestly doesn't live up to the Doom name. The only thing I can take away from it is the music. Everything else is pretty trash and I'm reminded of DmC whenever I play it.

This is an unpopular opinion but I think Eternal's art direction is fucking retarded. 2016 had the gritty low sci fi look that's been the Doom aesthetic since forever. Eternal has High Fantasy Warhammer shit and castles with spinning fireballs straight out of Super Mario World.

It looks looks absolutely moronic and really out of place.

Doom Eternal is an unapologetically and deliberately punishing game that doesn't really get good until you have the full loadout.

I actually respect Hugo for doubling down against the backlash and continues making harder and harder content.

Doom 2016 is a great retro style FPS with the surprisingly deep innovation of glory kills and a polished, consistent tone that's somehow both immersive and grounded while also being over the top and feeling inline with what came before. Eternal is almost its own thing entirely. It's closer to a (cliche) Fromsoft game where you have to memorize patterns and weaknesses and shit or die. It's also an over the top cartoon that feels less like "adapting video game elements to work in its world" and more "adapting its world to become a video game".

People get retarded about this debate, though. It's fine to like either more, some people like challenge while not caring about the aesthetics and some people prefer a power fantasy and want a cohesive artstyle.

I don't mind hard games, i fucking enjoy em.

But the problem with Doom Eternal is that it railroads you into combat, one of the many defenses i hear for this game is its like a piano and your playing from a score, but in reality Doom should be the piano that lets you play your own music and in this regard Doom Eternal fails utterly completely. If I want to bash my head into the keys slaying demons then so be it, thats my option. Doom Eternal doesn't give you the decency to fight how you want to fight.

Not to mention the batshit retarded story that’s told entirely through cutscenes.

Doom 2016: simple, Half Life-esque sci fi story about escaping a scientific facility overrun by monsters before heading to the monster homeworld to fuck their shit up. The story progression is logical and feels natural. There’s optional audio logs if you care about lore and shit but nothing is forced on you. IIRC all the cutscenes (except maybe the 5 second pre-boss ones) are fully immersive, Half Life-style. Has like three plot-relevant characters, plus the Doom Slayer himself.

Doom Eternal: ANCIENT GOTHIC HUMAN ALIENS! ANCIENT ROBOT ANGEL ALIENS! DOOM PRIESTS! REMEMBER THE BETRAYER, HE’S HERE TOO! FOR A WHOLE TWO MINUTES! OH AND THE STORY ITSELF IS LITERALLY JUST A SERIES OF FETCH QUESTS! Just… endless fucking cutscenes where all this retarded lore I don’t give two shits about is forced in my face. Yes, I know I can skip them - the problem is that they’re there at all in the first place.

Yeah, I like eternal more than 2016, and appreciated an attempt at a story, but anyone that thinks story=cutscenes are in the same book as people who think exposition should be shoveled out of a characters mouth all at once.

Okay, wtf did I just read?

Doom 2016 has a far better story and much more coherent tone, no question. Eternal is a throwaway mess story wise and tone is all over the place.

Combat is a mixed bag and 2016 is very accessible and easy to pick up. Mastering weapons is easy and it is relatively easy to build a winning arsenal with a few go to weapons (Super Shotgun, Chaingun, BFG). Eternal is super strict and you have to resource manage to an insane degree and play it the way the game wants you to. And as previously stated the game doesn't really open up and get fun until you have your full arsenal.

Ultra Nightmare is probably too autistic for me in both games. The environment is horribly unforgiving in 2016 and the best I can do in Eternal is Nightmare with extra lives so far.

Ive heard this complaint a lot and I definitely agree, the purpose of giving the player a lot of options is to allow them to tackle encounters in any way they want, not to force them to cycle through all their options such that there are a very limited number of ways to play. I want to just fuck shit up with the shotgun and the rocket launcher, but nooo I have to use the belch, the dash, everything. It's this that makes 2016 so much more enjoyable for me. I can see enjoying eternal, but it seems like difficulty for the sake of difficulty like a fromsoft game.

That last half of the post isn't technically wrong, but it does overlook the fact that there's more than sufficient Doom custom content that also satisfies the itch for running around and shooting shit like a maniac.
The ability to get ammo and health back from enemies is NuDoom's biggest improvement over the original format. Ideally, for the Doom Eternal sequel they'd just go back to basics and make Doom II 2 with 256-bit graphics, resource drops from enemies, weapon mods, and everything else built around the Doom II design philosophy where modding is much easier, you have to hunt down supplementary material outside the game if you want more than an occasional wall of text for story, and the bulk of development time goes into map design, gameplay, and general polish.

It'll never happen, but a man can dream.

Doom Eternal is a game about Cooldowns and it has way to many of them.

I keep hearing the game is hard, yeah because its forcing you to use all those gameplay mechanics. Its artificial and its not needed.
