DOOM

Eternal is so violently rigid in what you can do that it completely turns off new players.. If you can adapt to what it wants the game can turn into a great time but I've seen many user reviews simply saying the game sucks and that they hate it. It all boils down to the core game loop and finding it fun.

Soundtrack fucking rules though. Killing demons to pure thrashing guitars never seems to get old. Too bad Mick Gordon is probably gone for good.

I actually do like Eternal, despite my criticism of it. I have more hours on it than 2016. It's just that I've grown a bit tired of it.

Here's a question for kiwis: do any of you mofos use the default bindings for the weapons? I don't.

One thing I utterly hate about that game is that the BFG is part of the weapon cycle so if you're shooting stuff and run out of ammo you can swap to the fucking BFG and immediately fire a limited ammo weapon on an imp or fucking nothing. The OG Doom had a safety catch for both the BFG and the rocket launcher to if you had the mouse button held down when swapping weapons due to running out of ammo it wouldn't fire. We've gone backwards.

I have never found a use for the unmayker. The fact that it takes away from the BFG just makes it useless IMO.

I think the Theory is that it is supposed to be really good against Icon of Sin, but the waves of adds sort of knee caps that concept since you want the BFG to keep yourself clear.

Unmakyr is a single target BFG. When you focus it on one target it's actually more ammo efficient than the BFG. It's not very intuitive but it does have a legitimate use.
The problem is that the very nature of Doom Eternal's combat makes sure it's so rarely worth it, especially on higher difficulties. The weapon itself has a frighteningly limited ammo pool that never gets any better, goes through all of it in about four seconds, and is realistically only good versus single targets. So you can aim and wear down a Tyrant for like 26 shots or you can fire once into the air with a BFG and clear a fucking room.

I was thinking that at least during some of the questionable fights in TAG, I could have used it to wear down some of the bullshit enemies like the spirit possessed ones, but no, they have like 80%+ resistance to it, and so it's a waste of time there, too. The Unmakyr is one of those weapons where it's really only good if you play a certain way with a certain mindset in mind and the very nature of Eternal's combat means that the BFG is still usually the better option.

This is the point I was thinking of. And with single target enemies like a tyrant in TAG at the bottom of the Nautica base I found it way easier to dump ice bomb, all grenades, and blood punch. Tyrant dead. Problem solved. Wanna do it again? Just wait for the recharge. And this is on Nightmare.

BFG for huge rooms with too much spread to cover will always be my choice over using an unmayker. In any run I do I purposely never pick it up because I don't want it in my weapon wheel. Still trying to get through Nightmare Extra Life Mode.

It's the same reason no one uses machine guns, even the top-level Exotic ones, in high-level play in Destiny 1, outside the Crucible.

Because you can either pop out once and do an enormous amount of damage in one shot, (and barely need to aim, if you're using Truth), or spray the target down, necessitating you be out in the open for that much longer and likely not do anywhere near as much damage unless it all hits. When you're at the point where being caught out in the open is a death sentence, and every moment out and about pushes you closer to going down, it's an easy value judgment.

Why would you not just chainsaw that Imp instead of wasting a BFG shot? Especially since one fuel tank for the chainsaw will infinitely recharge.

In fact, Imps are generally delegated to the "fodder enemy" slot non-essential to ending encounters past the opening hours of the game for this reason.

Do you not know how weapon swapping works, especially automatic swapping?

The game cycles to whatever weapon available when you run out of ammo for one. This includes the BFG and Unmayker (if you have it). If you are in the middle of a firefight and frantically running out of ammo the game will throw out the next available weapon until you have no weapons left, then swap to the chainsaw. Guess what happens if you have the fire button held down? You'll fire off and deplete all ammo in the fraction of a second.

BFG ammo is a finite resource that the chainsaw can't replenish. It needs to be separated off as a deliberate move, like in 2016. Wanna use the BFG in 2016? Push B to swap on or off. Not part of the weapon cycle. They did it right in Eternal with the Crucible. Push V, use sword. The crucible takes sword charges, which also can't be replenished.

Went and gave Doom Eternal another try since its free on Gamepass. Stopped as soon as I hit another platforming session.

Why?

I think I'm the only fucktard that is actually still playing Eternal and legit having a blast. I can only do it in spurts with full concentration because the game will wear you out but my last goal is to beat Nightmare Extra Life mode. Ultra Nightmare is way to autistic for me to manage.

I've tried Extra Lives twice so far and failed twice. First game over was on Super Gore Nest, the second I made it all the way to Urdak and died during the ring fights, which made me drop the game for a good while.

I'm trying one last time hopefully and am at the Arc Complex with 19 Extra lives. I beat the fight with the berserk power up flawlessly and felt like a God afterwards. The music probably helped dial that feel in.

The Only Thing They Fear is You

Fuck. Yes.

I have honestly no idea. I haven't seen a single review where the reviewer liked the platforming. Even Youtubers who really really love Doom Eternal like Griffin Gaming were like "yea the platforming sucks."

If ID is smart they'll get rid of it completely for the next game. Pretty much no one liked it.

I didn't so much key into the "autoswap" part of the complaint there. Even so, I'd still argue it's more of an issue of player error to not have replenished their own ammo before they hit the point of auto-swapping to the BFG.

I always went ahead and whipped out the chainsaw any time I started running low on a weapon I was favoring in the first place so I never really had much of an issue with that.

It is entirely a player error issue for sure but can also happen at random if you dump the gun or use a weapon like the ballista that takes chunks of ammo away per shot. You can't swing around your chainsaw as much in Nightmare and enemies become bullet sponges, but wasting a BFG shot is a player problem. I just wish they had separated it away from the weapon cycle.

Another self inflicted issue is in Extra Life mode and ultra Nightmare there are no checkpoints. Anything finite is gone in one use.

Has anyone played Doom 64? I got it for free when buying Eternal. There is also a brutal Doom 64 as well. Worth playing?

Both Doom 64 and Brutal 64 are great games honestly. Doom 64 is pretty much Doom 3.

Doom 64 is literally the best game in the franchise in terms of atmosphere and level design. Now that it's out of its N64 prison there's absolutely no reason not to play it, especially now that the lighting issues have been fixed.

EDIT: just read some forum posts from one of the devs explaining why the game is so dark: they dev'ed the game in complete darkness indoors with shutter windows KEK. The game might have actually flopped if they didn't include a gamma slider in the options.
