DOOM

So who here is going to buy Doom Eternal on PC or console? I'm planning to build a gaming PC close to the game's release date, and it would be interesting to see if Eternal would run on it. The game's increased speed honestly makes me think it would feel better on computer anyway.
When I build my next PC, I will get Doom Eternal. Doom on console is heresy.
Probably on console seeing how I'm too poor and too stupid to build a PC that's nice enough to play it
HERETIC!

Agreed with you there. The only reason I have Doom 2016 on PS4 is because I don't have a PC powerful enough to play it on. And plus, even if Eternal doesn't work somehow (though I don't see how if I get that fancy-schmancy RTX 2060), I could still play 2016 the way it was meant to.

You're doing it wrong.

I feel you there. This is the first PC I'm ever building and it can be pretty daunting, both in terms of actually putting it together and being able to afford everything. I've been doing plenty of research though. This video helped out a lot.

Newegg, a PC part store, also has a decent guide that's more concise.

As for finances, that's gonna be on you. I'm planning on buying the parts piecemeal so it won't cause a giant hole in my savings.

Blasphemy! Have you forgotten the sacred teachings? If it can run Doom it should, and it can run Doom. The only heresy is not to allow Doom to be run on every single device in existence from ATMs to printers.

Amen

Earlier today I tried Crispy Doom for the first time. I quite like it; it's basically Chocolate Doom with mouselook plus a ton of bells and whistles. I never liked the aesthetics of ZDoom, GZDoom, and Zandronum; I always felt that they looked too clean, and some effects, like the imps' fireballs, just looked wrong. But at the same time, I don't like playing Doom II in Chocolate because the default controls are too slow and clunky to deal with the larger fights and some of the new enemies (how was anyone supposed to fight revenants back in the day?). Crispy Doom is a happy medium for me, where it maintains the aesthetics of vanilla and Chocolate (which I generally prefer over "cleaner" versions) while also having just enough modern conveniences that make the more challenging games like Doom II and Final Doom more palatable.

I don't know how we played with keyboard only back in the day. Dark times.

I'm fine with playing Ultimate Doom on keyboard since it feels like it was designed around the keyboard, and you could avoid most enemies' attacks by just stepping out of the way. Plus when you play the game with mouselook the game's difficulty crumbles.

You can't do that with Doom II though, and it took me a long time to learn that. I played it on Chocolate for years and kept getting stuck in the city levels, with the farthest I'd ever gotten being Barrels o' Fun. Only recently did I think to do a run on GZDoom and only then did the game open up for me.

The mouselook and jump functions added by ZDoom and GZDoom do lower the difficulty substantially since WADS before them and the WADs made by ID were built around keyboard controls.

All that said, may as well give Crispy Doom a try along with Chocolate Doom. The closest to a vanilla experience I ever got was playing the Collectors Edition back when Windows XP was still in use before Vista came around. And that shit was enough to keep me on my dads computer at the time when not giving the consoles any attention.

I'm playing through Plutonia on Ultra Violence because of Civvie's latest video:

I legit don't know how the fuck you were expected to beat it with keyboard only. I don't hate Plutonia but it's just not as fun. It's obviously a more masochistic experience. It's a map set made for people that love playing insanely hard Mario romhacks and/or Mario Maker levels. My favorite oldschool Doom (counting Doom 64 and Final Doom) is still Doom 2.

Fucking hell, Civvie inspired me to at least try it out on Hurt Me Plenty and I couldn't even make it past the first map (well I technically did, but I realized I forgot the rocket launcher and super shotgun and I wasn't about to attempt the second level without them). Plutonia's just way too goddamn much. I gave TNT a shot afterwards, and I consider it somewhat more interesting because of the original music and because it wasn't unreasonably cruel on Hurt Me Plenty.

I can commend the creator for admitting the game is extremely difficult and I even agree with him that people can't really complain about it being hard, but I don't really consider it to be fun.

Mine's still Ultimate Doom for a number of reasons, mostly nostalgic, but I do think that Doom II's action is superior when the game hits its stride.

I'd love Ultimate Doom more if it had the Super Shotty and monster variety of Doom 2. Yes, I know about the PSX Doom mod that does this. I still need to play that.

Plutonia has a level (pretty sure it's Map 10) that starts with a chaingunner pointed right at your back. It's bullshit.

I enjoy Plutonia but the difficulty can be a bit of a dampener on the experience.
TNT on the other hand isn't too bad in term so difficulty but it gets really long and drawn out. So it can become kind of tedious/a chore to play.
I hold them both about equal in my ranking.
1. Ultimate Doom. You just can't beat the purity of this one.
2. Doom 2. The bigger, louder, satisfying sequel.
3 Doom 64. Doom and Quake put together and the result is great.
4 Final Doom. Solid but flawed wads.
I'm just ranking the old school ones here but Doom 3 and Doom 2016 both rank highly in my regard.

I don't think Plutonia is bad. The maze level with the Archville's is genius. But constant monster ambushes, especially with Chaingunners, and being forced to retreat to fire some rockets or super shotty shells x number of times just isn't terribly fun.

I've played through Sigil 3 times now. Last two times have been on Ultra Violence. The 2nd time I played it I completely forgot to grab the BFG but I had no idea there was a secret level. If you're going to access the secret level you need the BFG. On my 3rd playthrough I got the BFG and played the secret level. I still like it a lot. My only complaint is that the final level is too short and I like the inkling of idea there: put you in a gauntlet where you face the Cyberdemon and Mastermind over and over. But it just felt rushed. But it's a back to the wall moment: do you make a gimmick fight ala Quake 1 (easily the weakest part of Quake 1), do you just throw a shitload of everything at the player which has been done to death in mods, do you repeat the Icon of Sin (which Plutonia did better), or do you create a brand new enemy which goes against the design philosophy Romero imposed upon himself?

Aside from the final level it's a great WAD. Easily better than Thy Flesh Consumed. A good comparison would be the 5th episode of Duke 3D in World Tour edition that brought back some of the original mappers. That one was all right but the philosophy behind that episode seemed to be just keep throwing Battlelords and hit-scanners at the player in ambushes whereas most of the ambushes in Sigil felt fair. The ambushes in Sigil weren't at the level of dickishness as Plutonia.

Doom 2016 just doesn't feel right on anything but PC. That smooth 60fps feels so good in a fast game like Doom. The Switch version just felt too clunky to me.

That's what I'm excited for once I build that PC. Then I can actually experience Doom 2016 the way it was meant to.
