DOOM

I really hope this was just Zenimax holding id at gunpoint or something, because if this was id's idea of a Doom game, then my hopes for this game have plummeted. Yeah, they got rid of all the garbage in this trailer (I hope), but this still means that someone had to say to the devs, 'id, what in God's name is this? This isn't Doom! What were you guys thinking? Fix this shit!' Even if they did get their act together, the talent is gone from id. All that's left is the team behind Rage, and because of that, I feel like they'll probably just pull a Shadow Warrior and turn the game into a Painkiller clone in their attempt to make the game "retro."

Don't get hyped just yet, there's a very good chance this game is going to suck.
That is true. One needs to be cautious with how the game is going since the scrapped trailer would mean things can go bad. Since all that is left is the Rage team, they better know not to make the game a clone of contemporary FPS's such as Serious Sam or COD. And looking at the trailer, it makes one want to ask this: where are the imps and former humans? Are there any Hell Knights eviscerating marines? Is the Doom Guy somewhere beating down a Cyberdemon with his fist? All we do see were a bunch of people and some movement. Only relation it would have is a slight relation to Doom II in using Earth as a setting.

Don't mean to double-post but I found something noteworthy: the canned version of Doom 4's trailer.

I'm sure I've asked you before but what'd you think of Doom 3 @spaps

Haven't played enough to form a real opinion. From what I've played though, it's a fairly half-assed attempt at a horror game, and not a very good Doom game.

I think if they made something with a lot of the same aspects of Wolfenstein The New Order they'd end up with a pretty good Doom 4. For me a lot of things in WTNO was just very satisfying like the varied locations and the gun play. I don't think they need any stealth like in that game in Doom 4, though.

I thought so too when it came out a billion years ago, but I played it again not too long ago and I liked it a lot more. It felt way more Doom-y than I remembered.

Maybe it's because the "BFG edition" or whatever didn't have that stupid flashlight. That was lame.

I agree. Doom 3 was more fun to go back to than to play the first time. The two expansions were more fun than the primary game, as well.

Wolfenstein The New Order was a very different case than Doom 4.

It was made by a different developer for one, Machine Games. And they were made up of ex-Starbreeze developers. All of the members of Machine games worked on Butcher Bay and the Darkness. So they not only knew how to make a competent first person shooter but they also knew how to write first person shooters and how they should play.

There was also a very big difference in expectation. Wolfenstein is considered a more niche franchise than something like Doom. Less people were going to buy it at launch and mostly everyone thought it was going to suck.

With something like Doom though you know it's going to turn a profit within the first day of it's release because of the name alone. It was also in development hell for many, many years. (Doom 4 has officially been in development since 2008 and was only "restarted" in 2011 because of it was going nowhere. Bare in mind this trailer was clearly plan B). There's also the fact Carmack isn't working on the game since he jumped ship to work on the Oculus rift. And none of the original devs are either.

But however the biggest difference between this project and something like Doom 3 is now Id is beholden to a publisher, ever since they were bought by Bethesda. This was clearly the biggest change for Id in the last 10 years and one of the biggest reasons why I think Rage released in the state it did.
In April 2013, Kotaku published an exposé describing Doom 4 as trapped in "development hell". Citing connections to id, the article claims that Doom 4 has suffered under mismanagement, and that development was completely restarted in 2011. Inside sources described the pre-2011 version, which was to portray the uprising of hell on Earth, as heavily scripted and cinematic, comparing it to the Call of Duty franchise. The pre-2011 version was criticized as mediocre, but the sources also described the new version as "lame" and a "mess."[15] Id's Tim Willits said during Quakecon 2013: "Every game has a soul. Every game has a spirit. When you played Rage, you got the spirit. And [Doom 4] did not have the spirit, it did not have the soul, it didn’t have a personality."[16]

All this trailer screams to me is "play it safe, put something out there with the brand name and make as much money as physically possible to justify keeping this studio around." This is the only reason why they were so hesitant to release footage and why they've been so secretive about the project. Bethesda is absolutely no stranger to hype and they know how well it sells their Elder Scrolls and Fallout games after they announce them.

I played it again last year using the mods on this page and it's like a whole new game. You guys need to give it a shot.

@Cuddlebug

I actually didn't know any of that. Doom 4 always seemed like it was going the Duke Nukem Forever route and was just going to be vaporware (well until DNF actually got released).

Actually, the canned version of Doom 4 was in development before the Zenimax buyout, Todd Hollenshead was supposedly in charge of the development, but he was busy hiring people for the game, while John Mulkey was in charge as a Lead Designer, who may be better known as the Lead Designer of Aliens: Colonial Marines, in my opinion that explains a lot about the old version of Doom 4, i usually don't agree with Zenimax/Bethesda on their decisions (specially cancelling Human Head's version of Prey 2), but re-booting Doom 4 may be one of their better ideas, i hope the development team came to their senses and deliver us at least a decent game.

A bit off topic, but I hope there are some Doom promotional items in Team Fortress 2 like they did with Wolfenstein. Hopefully that trailer isn't accurate anymore, though, because it'd be such a wasted opportunity on their part.

I haven't played it, but I thought the new Wolfenstein looked cool because of the alt. history element. With Doom though it's kind of a generic "kill demons from Hell" no matter what they do. (Which is fine if that's what you feel like playing at the time.)

Oh man I remember playing this on an old 486 with only 4MB of RAM. I literally had to edit the autoexec.bat to allow it to either play DOOM or boot into Windows 3.1.

My favorite WAD at the time was Barney Doom. It turned the demons into Barney and their growls into his giggle. I used to love playing the final level in Knee Deep in the Dead because there's a whole bunch of him and you get to blow them all up with 1 rocket.

Played Doom2, Heretic, Quake and all those other games based around around Doom and it's engine.

Good times.

I made a Doom WAD featuring a man from To Catch a Predator. It's rather rudimentary, but you may enjoy it like I do.

I checked out your WAD and i found out that you put all the IWAD contents with the new sounds on it, making it a larger file when it doesn't need to be one, i cleaned up your file and now it's much lighter, also it's not recommended to distribute IWAD contents inside PWADs for various reasons (legal crap and file size being the main ones), i've uploaded the "light" version of your WAD, it should work the same way as the original with no problems:

Thanks. I didn't really know what the hell I was doing when I was making it. It took forever to get it to actually work, so I'm not really surprised that I messed it up, lol.

So the new version of Brutal Doom (v20) came out 3 days ago. Has anyone here played it yet? I haven't yet :(
