Yeah, that would certainly explain the sequence of events. It's late 2020 and early 2021 where things start to unravel, after managing to make it through his first year at UCLA without major drama.I'm starting to think this Katherine Ritchie who took out the restraining order against him was his incel oneitis obsession for possibly years and who inadvertently pushed his schizophrenia over the edge. Per the restraining order and the time line @Gender of peace put down he first met her back in 2013 when he was a grad student and she was a lecturer at Duke. She probably didn't remember him and went on to lecture at other colleges but he probably harbored a crush on her during that time. Combine that with the complex towards blonde white girls he's probably always had on some level and that developed into something pretty unhealthy. Fast forward to 2020 and he's managed to fail upwards into lecturing at UCLA and clearly cannot handle it, he seems to be offended at the idea of having to actually do his job and his latent schizophrenia is getting worse and worse. Then Kate Ritchie comes over to his philosophy department at UCLA and in his deteriorating mental state he desperately latches on to his RL Android 18 waifu and it goes sharply downhill from there when she rebuffs him for being an obsessed schizo.
I'm pretty sure he's specifically referring to her in this segment.
From the LA Times article:Small new update, he is apparently facing federal charges

In her affidavit, FBI special agent Stephanie Benitez said Harris informed his mother in emails in January 2021 of his plan to shoot a UC Irvine professor with an MP5 submachine gun “for giving me schizophrenia.” He graphically described shooting the professor in the head.
Within days of learning of the threats, UCLA police working with the FBI got his mother to have Harris involuntary committed for a month in North Carolina, according to an affidavit.
On Sunday, Harris sent an email just before 1 a.m. to some of his former UCLA students, replete with racist slurs against Jewish and East Asian people.

- Year 2 of Duke Ph.D. (timeframes unclear): Matthew is placed on academic probation. Source.
- Fall 2019: Upon earning a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Duke, Matthew begins a postdoctoral position at UCLA.
- EDIT: January 2021: Matthew invited a female student to a coffee shop that was closed and tried to lure this student to his apt. This 8s when the Title IX investigation began. Source
- March 2021: Matthew teaches a class on music and identity that was, by all accounts, a complete trashfire. He was not only hilariously bad at lecturing but also told students they would get automatic As. Someone reported the situation to administrators and Matthew lashes out by assigning all students a final grade of C+; one student has their transcript changed 43 times during this incident. Source
- March 28 2021: Matthew emails porn to students along with screenshots of an obsessively organized folder system with folder names suggestive of child porn. Source. This led to being placed on leave
as well as the Title IX investigation he bemoans in his manifesto. Source.- January 30 2022: Matthew posts a video titled “UCLA PHILOSOPHY (MASS SHOOTING)” featuring footage of the 2017 mass shooting at a Las Vegas along with references to the Columbine High School mass shooting. He would go on to post around 300 videos over the next 24 hours, most of which depict a rapid unraveling of his mental state
- January 31 2022: Matthew sends his 800 page schitzcow manifesto with “specific threats” to members of the university’s philosophy department. UCLA notified the FBI.
- February 1 2022: Shortly after midnight, UCLA cancels classes, goes remote (note that this is one day after in person classes resumed following cancellation due to omnicoof). Meanwhile, CU Boulder locks down part of their campus as the popo searches for a "wanted male". Matthew is arrested in Boulder Colorado near an elementary school.
I'll try to add to this as I can.
So does anyone have his soundcloud archived, or no?
Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to navigate Apple Music, as I am autistic [Aspergers Syndrome, specifically], have no money, and refuse to support corporations. If anyone else can get that stuff, please do
Not sure if that's all of them. In addition he seems to have some songs on Apple Music which were still online as of Tuesday.
I wonder if perhaps this is what he’s calling his schizophrenia diagnosis but I really don’t have anything to back that up with.So does he actually have blood cancer, or is that just a weird random obsession?
I've heard anecdotally academia can be full of drama. There are a lot of egos and autism too I assume. I heard a story that one of the well known CS professors here was banging the widow of another famous professor who died of cancer or something years back. Gossip stuff like that which is funny. While I'm inclined to take everything that he says with a pile of salt.... if even the slightest bit of this is true that is some absolute real shit. I will tell you from my time in academia department wars can be NASTY and often departments can be very divided on ideals or even at war with other departments for whatever reason, valid or not.
Also, not all colleges have fraternizing rules between students and professors (check your student handbook). This is especially true with graduate departments as it's normalized to kind of go out with your students for coffee to discuss something or go out to dinner after a conference or just chill after hours in a 100% harmless way, keep up a friendly relationship post doctoral/masters and still hang out when you meet up etc..... howeverrr.....
I know of a grad student who ended up fucking their advisor who was married at the time... She basically was home wrecking 100% and it was a huge scandal that made the university news but it got swept under the rug. He got divorced and the student got her Doctorate of (redacted), became the wife of said professor and then got her own professorship at same University. After all, nowhere in the rules did it say "you can't fuck your professor/ thesis advisor".
Imagine middle school drama. Like that but with a doctorate.
This made me curious and there's a cool graph I found on average dissertation length by subject https://flowingdata.com/2013/05/08/length-of-the-average-dissertation/The first thing that struck me when I saw his PhD (found via OP's link; available archived via the Wayback Machine here) is how short it is; 158 pages. The word count of the entirety of the PhD (including footnotes and bibliography) is no more than 45,000 words; I was under the impression that PhDs ranged from anything from 60,000 (minimum) to 100,000 (maximum) words.
Duke University's Department of Philosophy website doesn't seem to give an official guideline for the word count for a PhD degree, but I imagine the aforementioned word count range would be what they have in mind.
So it's interesting that he was able to obtain his Doctorate at such a low word count. Perhaps they so highly regarded his work they made an exception and gave him his degree?![]()
Actually, California surprisingly enough doesn't have affirmative action. He probably just didn't show how insane his throught process was in his dissertation or the professors who helped him with his Masters and PHD work helped him tone it down I imagine. This is what happens when you affirmative action someone with an 85 IQ through highly ranked schools to a PhD.
Public schools like the UC system don't have it publicly. I have a friend at UCLA who sent me the initial article about it and he also suspects affirmative action still manages to sneak in.Actually, California surprisingly enough doesn't have affirmative action.
