I am so glad I graduated when I did; academia is one gigantic depraved circus now. I mean, I had issues with some of my professors and they throw tenure in your face whenever they can, but fucks like this being allowed anywhere near a classroom or Zoom meeting is just outlandishly irresponsible, dangerous and shows how broken things truly have become.

I didn't have professors this bad but the craziest ones I had were also the most chill. They would basically give everyone an A in the class as long as they turned in an essay or make half the class participation grade or something else easy. Maybe COVID made them lose their marbles since online classes made it 100% more apparent that nobody in the class is paying attention and you're talking to yourself.

I was never able to put it into words until you pointed it out but you’re right, all of my worst class experience have been since about a year into COVID. Even though my school is for the most part face-to-face now, I think the free-for-all that was remote classes has really shaken the more self-absorbed profs to their core as they realized that giving thousands of dollars and years of their lives to force people to listen to them ramble, wouldn’t actually make them listen.
Mine haven’t taken a nose dive into crazy town like Matthew Harris, but so far I’ve been made to take a 20pt quiz over our prof’s self-introduction PPP, offered extra credit if I sent pictures of my niece (obviously reported this,) and received an F on a 1,500 word paper for spelling another prof’s last name wrong. My friend at a different uni had her professor call her on Zoom and cry for 30 minutes to her because she reported him for threatening to not let her graduate if she didn’t take an internship with him. I’ve never had or known anyone who had experiences like this before the pandemic, and unless I’ve just been living in a bubble until now, I’m going to assume COVID really messed with them.

Higher education in America is just not fucking worth it.

What is this guys timeline of a dissent into madness?

• 2019 he has submitted his dissertation which was read by at least four people of sound mind.
• Spring 2020 clearly disorganized unprofessional (student review from OP)
• March 2021 accused of sending porn to student (student review from OP)
• February 2022 publishes a manifesto and is arrested

800 pages does write itself overnight. These complaints, that seem to start from the moment he began teaching were more than just "boo hoo teacher was boring and class was hard". At some point someone looked at this weighed the cost of finding a new post doc vs the cost of mitigating the complaints against Dr.Harris and picked Dr.Harris. This is more a stain on the US post graduate system then it is an man who could barley do his job while speeding into madness. Maybe what drove him over the edge was finishing the rat race of getting a PhD only to find an electric shock instead of cheese. That life crisis of finishing school and finally being faced with "what now?" broke him as he was forced to realize he cant run from the loans anymore.
