I lived with a person who developed schizophrenia culminating in a psychotic episode. In hindsight the signs were there but at the time I guess it’s harder to see. It doesn’t help that academics are already considered eccentric, so he would have been given the benefit of the doubt.

I am not going to assume that my experience (or the involved institutions) is at all representative. That said, I would estimate that at least 1 out of every 10 or so of my fellow instructors, both in the UK and the US, had clearly discernible mental illnesses and yet were permitted (forced?) to still teach students.

Note: This trend did not extend to my time in Asia and I in fact had a Japanese doctor inform me I should ensure nobody knew of my (quite common, easily treated, and relatively minor) mental health diagnosis as public knowledge of this condition would hinder my ability to teach. This regardless of the institution's obligation, as part of my contract/programme, to respect my American and European credentials. Also of note during my time there: I saw another, very well respected professor, "voluntarily" retire early, having just turned 40 (!) years old, following his diagnosis with bog standard depression. This gentlemam has still not returned to active classroom instruction despite publishing at least two articles a year in exceptionally high impact journals (think Nature). I recently requested he give a remote talk over Zoom to a class I'm teaching and was informed by his secretary that he is retired from teaching.

Your mistake here, with all three questions, is attempting to find any discernible logic in the ramblings of a schizophrenic man. Potentially sensible or intelligible quotes are simply echoes of any intelligence and previous knowledge that once occupied his brain.
