Continuing on from my last post, I did end up making pot brownies... Kind of.
The last time I did this was in 2007 and did it using hash.
This time I intended to use both hash and weed, although I was only able to get weed, and it seems weed is a bit more annoying to prepare for edibles.
Back in the day I didn't really know what I was doing, just winging it. I knew enough back then to pour some kind of oil onto a metal spoon, put some hash in and burn under the spoon to melt it in, so I did that and also just used a cheese grater and put some layers in the mix that would go into the oven to cook.
I did some research having never prepared weed edibles myself, only hash brownies and hash yoghurts. I decided to decarboxylate the weed in the oven first.
I bought about a quarter of an ounce and used most of that for cooking. Most of the instructional videos or recipies I watched used a lot more. I don't know whether they just had really high tolerances, grew their own, lived in a place where it was legal and freely available, etc, but sadly I am not in such a situation.
Anyway, I looked at about a dozen different methods for doing this before. Most of the instructions seemed to vary quite a bit... The majority of it seemed to be just about preparing the cannabis by decarboxylating it first. Not all methods called for this, but I wanted to be on the safe side.
Another issue was people listing ingredients for the brownie, but not listing how much of each ingredient was required or how large a batch of brownies the recipie is actually intended for...
So once again, I was just kind of winging it, but with some fragmented knowledge on how this was supposed to be done.
I grew impatient however. A point of contention between instructions/recipies is how long and at what heat you're actually supposed to decarboxylate the weed. The only general consensus I could gather was to go for a low heat and a long time, but that it was a delicate balance between just drying out the weed and lightly crisping it to burning away all the smell and flavor and a lot of the active ingredients.
I decided to just go for a low oven temperature and was going to go for 45 minutes initially but just said fuck it and did half an hour. The smell was incredibly strong but the weed wasn't burned in any way. Probably could have done with a bit longer.
I let it cool for a few minutes whilst melting some butter into a frying pan. You're just supposed to let it simmer. Again, the times are a point of contention. If I can remember correctly, I did it for about 30 to 60 minutes. Sorry about the lack of specificity, I did end up getting pretty damn high though.
I probably should have used more butter but whatever. I didn't bother straining the weed from the butter at all. Some recipies suggest doing this as they imply the plant material tastes bad but I've never felt that to be true. I let the butter cool for a few minutes and then poured started mixing it into the brownie batter I'd just prepared.
I'll may seem like a hypocrite here complaining about the lack of specificity in these online instructions I read whilst providing very little detail in this post. That's mostly because I am no cook, I can barely make a glass of water, and you could definitely do better than I did with some knowledge, experience or just a bit more preparation and patience.
I was hoping to get the whole process done and have some stuff ready to eat in about 2 hours. I hadn't had lunch or dinner yet. It probably took closer to 3 as I encountered some difficulty in actually cooking the brownies.
In the end, I didn't end up with brownies at all, but something a lot more like a cookie. It was very sweet (I probably shouldn't have used to much sugar) and damn did it smell and taste strongly of weed.
Did it taste good? If you like cookies you'd probably like this, but I don't have that much of a sweet tooth. I ended up eating them soaked in m1lk and cream with blended up cashews, almonds, walnuts and coconut which made the taste experience a lot better.
Did it get me high? No doubts there. My eyes were redder than the devil's dick. My body felt sloth-like. I was having kind of weird, racing thoughts. Enjoying music and videos and stuff like that a lot more.
Would I do it again? Probably not anytime soon. I made enough to last me three days. I'd replace my regular dinners with eating these cookie monstrosities with the m|lk/cream/nuts. The issue is after the three days was over, I had no weed left and was kind of bummed. Only because if I'd just smoked it instead I probably could have made it last about twice as long. Plus when you get the munchies and all you have to eat is edibles... Well...
