I never consciously thought about it, but you're absolutely correct. Contrasting Pondsmith's CP2020 books to most RPGs it there is jarring. On one hand you have books that are distilled "I saw this cool thing somewhere and I'll make it even cooler" and on the other you have a devious truly motherfucker who definitely has seen some shit.
Years later I'm still impressed by the layers of absolutely rational and believable security Edgerunners Inc. had - no asspulls but it did include paid solos being tasked with hunting down perps if the head honchos actually got got, or a layering of armoured walls and shitty drywall where security would know where to take cover, but anyone storming the place from an obvious entry point would get ventilated. A single shitty office building in a little supplement has more soul and thought put into it than entire RPG systems.

I once designed a massive city centered around a world renown wizard’s college. In reality the whole town was secretly controlled by a cabal of mind flayers who would selectively groom students for greatness only to kidnap them right after graduation. As far as Warhammer Fantasy goes I only know that the Age of Sigmar drew the ire of Fa/tg/uys. But my understanding is that the Warhammer is games are not this convoluted "maybe everyone can be good" bullshit. Warhammer is everybody wants to kill their enemy. Simple as that.

Never let anyone fool you into thinking 40k, and fantast rp are simple. Warhammer is autistic. Everyone wants to kill the enemy, which is everyone, and you gotta watch out because they're plotting together. Runequest is pretty dope, you want fantasy and an ak go shadow run.....Rift has alot of fantasy stuff but rift is weird.

real question for anyone who runs a game. how much of the lore as written did you use where this is an actual sucker punch vs homebrew up an entire world to run the game in?

5e player here, never touched the older editions (I do play other systems though)
I use my own worlds because I cannot be arsed to read up on the locales of the sword coast (or the other areas of faerun they released material for)
Most of the lore I have used was for playable races and monsters (like the dragonborn having clans is something thats present on all of my games)
Beyond that I incorporate whatever I like or makes sense to my setting, for example I read the Al'qadim books (arabian nights setting from the advanced d&d era) and took quite a bit of the customs, lore, expressions, etc for my own arabian nights setting.
Afterwards I downloaded a few more AD&D era pdfs to read and honestly. The lore in those books gives me a sense of wonder, the one in 5e? I am indifferent to it unless it is monster lore/ecology. I don't like using the "soul vs souless" argument but I guess thats one way I can put it, perhaps passionate vs passionless.
I would say I am uninterested in places like the sword coast due to it being bland and too european, but they have also done other regions that are fairly different (maztica, icewind dale) which I also don't care about.

works for any warhammer tho. not a fan of nucron lore for example (trying to give space terminators depth is imo like trying to give tyranids a conscience), then you get primaris, the return of primarchs and other fun stuff.

but in the end, if someone comes in from the videogames or only has surface knowledge of the new stuff he will as much a fan as someone who did it 10 or 20 years ago, so who's to say which one is the real fan or what makes A better than B.

I'd really wish people would stop using that that as an argument, because a) sturgeon's law exists, and does so for a reason b) not every needs to be or even should be "realistic"/"authentic"/"grounded" c) just because you're accomplished af doesn't mean everything you say is gold, everybody is dumb sometimes, and sometimes even quite often.

point I'm trying to make is yes, some people want a gritty campaign where shit gets real, meanwhile some just want fluffy escapism, and in the end there is no "right" or "wrong" way to play, it all depends on your table and what game you want to run. same way there's no "good" or "bad" anime, because sometimes you just want to chill and watch some SOL moeblobs having fun - and even if that or any other "thing I don't like" gets the majority of funding and production there will always be a niche space (to a degree, there must still be money to be made) that will be catered to, that's just how this shit works. which someone like miyazaki should know, even if he has a point he's dumb about it (not to mention there's a big fucking difference between doing a standalone movie and a serial, but hey...)

so as shit as dnd is gonna get, people will just file off the shit parts or play another system altogether; there's an argument that over time all you gonna find is dndtards, but tbh that's just the amount of "new" players coming into the hobby. you always had to look hard for good players that fit your table, all that shit adds is more background noise, that's all.

Dungeons and Dragons is mostly a Hasbro thing now. If the upcoming movie causes a noticeable uptick in popularity they tend to broaden the IP so both new and old fans get catered towards. I mean they even did the same thing with Hero Quest.
