If they're doing this as a way to just make the gameplay crazier than it currently is, then fine, I don't think people will have too much trouble with that outside of initial pushback. I'm fairly certain tranny dwarves wouldn't be the weirdest thing you can do in Dwarf Fortress.

If they're attempting to push some crappy woke agenda into the game, then it's just an omen of worse things to come. Everyone knows the "feminist" advocates will not stop just at that, they will keep adding more. If that's the case, the message to the developers should be this:

I agree with you, but let's be honest we all know it's the second one and they won't stop now that they've started.

If you're unable to enjoy a game because there are trans characters in it, maybe you're the one with the problem

Then again if you're unable to enjoy a game because there aren't trans characters in it you might also have a problem

I think these kinds of games with minimalistic graphics that provide for intentional and unintentional hilarity, i.e. Dwarf Fortress, Space Station 13, Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead, etc. are the best games to have this kind of thing in without any kind of pushback from players (or at least some initial pushback, because at this point people are conditioned to be on their toes when transgender-related things are concerned). It's not the fact that they're adding it that makes it bad, but the suspicion in people's minds (or a very clear statement) that an unnecessary agenda is being pushed onto them in a game where you can rip people's testicles off and beat their previous owner to death with them.

The problem I have is, as described in the article, they're banning/blocking anyone who wants to discuss it. Which shows me a great deal about their mindset in developing this, and overall makes me question future work.

It's not about any particular issue, it's about control. If trans become ubiquitous in everything, then they'll find a new problem.
Where you draw the line is irrelevant--the question is "do you want to stand up and control your own art, or be told what to make by people who will always find fault with you and your art, forever?"
