A game about building a planned economy got acquired by a commie publisher, who would have thought?

I got the steam version on a sale, did the tutorial, and then settled another fort in a rather uneventful location, growing it just long enough to figure out how to make the best of the work order and labour systems. So when I checked out version 0.47.05 with the LNP the UI seemed just as clunky to me as the Steam version does to the old users. It's as if the publisher set out to create a near-unbridgeable gap between the old base and the steam players, sabotaging their own hype train out of spite.

Its interesting because some of the cool mods such as the long night will release like the old days where it comes with its own preconfigured df package

Adventure Mode finally came to Steam and (predictably) they fucked up the UI again. I'm noticing more grumbling around Reddit, Steam Discussions and other places as people start to realize that the expectation the game would get noticeably better after becoming a commercial release isn't panning out.
It's been funny seeing newer players who never played Adventure Mode before slowly realize that (despite claims of being a beta release) there is basically nothing to do and no real gameplay once you get over wrestling with livestock and clumsily wandering the world for a few hours.

Their comments expressing disappointment or frustration are typically just hidden/downvoted to oblivion with replies shaming them for not having enough imagination or drive. Was surprised to see a few comments calling it out that actually had a number of positive votes.

This post on Steam Discussions made me laugh.
"Nothing really exciting happened"
"That's completely normal."

Random dude points out that even if butchery, bone crafts, etc is re-added it won't change the fundamental problem with Adventure Mode.

More people disappointed

Large amount of people constantly replying with:
"It's a beta though! Just because they haven't fixed fundamental issues with Fortress or Adventure mode for multiple years doesn't mean they won't fix it now!"

This game gives me the same feeling as seeing some kid I know fuck up their whole life and end up homeless.
So much potential ruined by autism and a community of positive toxicity.

"So let me get this straight, Tarn's got a whole team working on this now and it's still shit?"
"Shut up and appreciate what you've got, peon!"

I feel so vindicated about not giving Tarn any of my money now.

Meanwhile I've been having fun messing around with code. Actually figured out how to program Magma Crabs to give birth to babies (they're called Magma Crablings!) and domesticate them! Now the possibilities of using them as a proper security system/unintended source of !!FUN!! are truly limitless!

There were some fun things to do like raiding vaults, or retrieving objects like slabs or books with the secrets of life and death to bring to use in fortress mode. It's always been deeply flawed, though.

It was inevitable.

Do you mean tame ones? Because I've had forts suffer fps death from crabsplosions in the past (i.e. almost all the announcement messages were more crabs). Had to manually genocide them.

Yes. Had to modify the birth rates to prevent that from happening (though a 'splosion can happen with any tame creature and crundles if you're not careful) and I'm fairly autistic about animal keeping in my forts anyway so I haven't had a problem with them so far.

I usually use crundles as practice since they're basically harmless (the danger is the other stuff that randomly shows up while messing around with them). You can train up your military fairly quickly at little risk and get a decent amount of meat/fat/etc. for food and soap. I also sometimes use the bone for crafts or arrows to kill more crundles with, although a major problem with that is if your idiot dwarves then try to take on an FB with crundle bone arrows. It takes some stockpiling micro and "uniform" menu trickery to keep crundle bone arrows out of normal use, so I often just don't make them at all.

>50.12 came out
The UI is still garbage, correct? I can't be bothered to download it.
So here I am now, still trying to forget everything I knew about DF, just so I have a chance to play it without my muscle memory fucking me up.
You know what, fuck abstaining from playing a good game just because it got ruined in later updates. I'll just play 47.05 from now on.

Sounds interesting, how do I edit the raws for this?

Feels that way. It's not just the steam version, the newest build on bay12 has the same janky fucked interface. I'm glad I didn't shell out any money to buy the steam version fuck that. Why the fuck would I spend money on it when they irreparably broke the interface and removed features?

This game is too weird sometimes.

New fort in joyous wilds, 12 dorfs. Randomly 2 wild grasshopper people wander into my fort. One of my stray dogs attack them, the dog mangles the right foot of one grasshopper people and the left leg of another, the grasshoppers kill the dog. NO ONE INTERVENES. The grasshoppers are injured and craw all over the place.

For some reason both of them decide to start following one of my dwarfs, my weaponsmith. They just craw around behind her.

The chosen one has been found. Start making statues of her.

O
Finally loaded up current world in Legends Viewer and have pretty much the full story now. Capital has been at war with goblin civ and they lost three monarchs in a siege.

View attachment 5363672

The goblins returned in 251 and 252, the latter fight killing the King. I think by that point the civ was sick and tired of losing four monarchs so quickly and decided to seek a new ruler elsewhere.

It doesn't end there for Domas though. The interesting thing to note about Oiledflag is that it has a significant elf population. I'd be annoyed by this if it weren't for the fact that they literally dropped everything they were doing and joined the fight. Lots of them died, but the average kill count was about 8 to 10 gobbos, which took out a decent chunk of the siege. Domas's old mentor was among them and took out 8 before going down herself.

Domas joined my fort just before Eliye died. I imagine that must've hit her pretty damn hard considering they were friends for almost 20 years. Both of her kids died during the siege too and what's even worse is her grandkids have become necromancers and have been banished from the civilization. I suppose it makes total sense that she'd step up to the plate after losing so much. I'm a fan of her now.
I remember in one of my worlds, there was a giant fucking war between a human civilization and a necromancer society that resulted in the deaths of untold thousands. Like, the deadliest battle in that world was a siege that had most of the casualties be taken by the undead attackers.

A bridge between old UI and SteamUI is impossible that would also satisfy new players who dont have crippling autism to learn it.

I love DF, I don't play the steam version but I also will not defend the old UI as anything that needs to be protected or defended, its trash from the mind of an autistic man who himself said he never ever liked making UI and the whole ascii/console aesthetic was used so he wouldn't have to do UI. The biggest issue is Tayrn will only let a very few ballwashers to look at his code and they are incapable of making anything better because they are all trannies who cant even decide their gender let alone large overhauls to the UI.

I used to play df long ago, and yeah it's fucking weird sometimes.

Once I was building a tower, because I wanted to make murals every year to commemorate my settlement history, and every fucking year when they drawed the history of that years was about the fucking tower.

So basically they drawed the tower inside the tower.
