When I read Epistle 3 from Marc Laidlaw, I would've been content completely had Valve just released Episode 3 in 2009-2010 with that story. It was pretty much in tone and in line with what Half-Life 2 was. That's what they should have done. That would've allowed Half Life 3 to be placed at any given time, anywhere, much like Half-Life 2 was. Instead they dug a hole for themselves and Alyx was pretty much the golden reset button to partially unfuck their situation. And we all know the only reason Alyx was made is because Valve needed some type of game to get people to buy VR headsets
Valve fucked up royally by not finishing Episode 3, if they had at least reached that point they could have taken a long break and picked up anywhere later on, like you said.

I think their window of opportunity closed after 2012, 2012 would have been 5 years after Episode 2, pushing it, but not completely absurd like a decade+, in fact that was when I was expecting Episode 3 to happen considering Portal 2 had an Easter egg referencing it, I figured by the following year there would be Episode 3, but I was wrong.

I still can't believe what happened really happened, that we were just left on such a brutal cliff hanger that was never followed up on, it's just fucking cruel.

One thing I've noticed is how Gabe Newell no longer has the cult following he used to have, where he was treated as some sort of folk hero, the asshole just pissed all that away.

So they got two chicks who are theater majors and watched a re8 lp on youtube. The rest look like dumpy cucks who run relatable and fiestytm social media accounts.

>Black voices in gaming. What the fuck is bipoc? BlacksIndiansOrentialsChincks? Bisexual people of colour?
Sometimes i wish i could travel back to 2008 and show people what the world would be like.

less design more business model, they wanted to recreate the paper version (which even doesn't work in the analog sphere anymore, but still could've been cheaper/less time consuming for everyone in the long run considering the average digital business model) with b2p and then trading instead of having people grind constantly with f2p random drops - but that's apparently what people wanted "because hearthstone is free too!111". when it came out no one was talking about the game, only the price.

quality in design is a moot point considering the shit that makes billions these days because people are retarded.

One other big issue with Artifact's monetization model was that players couldn't trade cards outright. The only option to get cards (besides opening packs) was to buy or sell them through the Steam Marketplace, and Valve charged at 15% transaction fee on every card bought or purchased that way. Not to mention needing to buy tickets to play the "competitive" mode, so Artifact pretty much charged for everything.

One thing that needs to be kept in mind is that whatever finished version of Episode 3 that might’ve been delivered based on that premise likely would’ve been very different, especially the endgame sequence with the Borealis. That whole segment screams “here’s some really cool concepts that we have no idea how we’re actually going to implement”.

At this point, I think some kind of fan film/fan animation based off the “leaked” concept is the only way we’ll ever get some sort of proper ending for the series.

black indigenous people of color, which appeared after native americans rightfully pointed out blacks need to shut the fuck up because MUH SLAVERY is chickenshit compared to their history, so they got a pity mention. it's also notworthy that the poc is pretty much redundant (or blacks think they're so special they aren't people of color) and no one considers white a color even if you fled from the worst shitholes on the planet...

how much does wotc take for mtgo? and I think tournaments needs tickets too, but haven't looked into it for years so my memory might be wrong/outdated.

anyway, yeah they tried too hard to early to monetize it, they should've offered a version with a basic deck, b2p, free versus and later on with a bigger cardpool tournaments and paid drafts, maybe even hold off on the first cycle till everybody could settle in with the starter cards, get used to it and then add more (including more monetization). but in typical valve fashion they just dumped it out there hoping the community will take care of the rest with enough people buying into it at launch.

honestly what they should do is just open it up at that point, so people can mod the fuck out of it if not outright change the system. imagine a source 2 netrunner or WoW tcg mod based on that codebase.

I think about that sort of thing a lot, I can only imagine that in 2008 anyone, no matter what they're politics were, would say "wow, everyone in the future is a fucking idiot"

It still wouldn't have been an ending though, it was still a cliff hanger of sorts, just more open and not as brutal as Episode 2's.

The implications Epistle 3 puts forth though are wild, like Alyx actually recognizing the G Man. (Don't tell me if Half-Life Alyx goes into any of that)

We never would have got actual "the end" closure but if it would have still been better than ending it with Episode 2.

I feel like the reveal that the Combine is much, much greater than anything the remnants of humanity could ever hope to overcome, with humanity’s last desperate attack with what remains of their resources barely even putting a dent into their forces, is a good enough ending. It’s not a cliffhanger, there’s no coming back from that - it’s a pretty definitive “humans are fucked” ending.

Except not really, because it's pretty clear that what's going on throughout the series is G Man is using his reality warping powers as a long game to take down the Combine through unusual means because clearly they aren't something that can be defeated through traditional force.

I do feel like Half-Life is one of those stories that would have naturally ended on an open note, because you could never do something like simply explain what the deal with the G Man is, the entire point is the mystery, I think the overall theme of the series was just how vast and strange the universe/multiverse really is and how little humanity actually knows, which was an interesting contrast with the series otherwise "wuv da science" kind of vibe.

But an open ending is one thing, an ending like how Episode 2 ended is complete bullshit.

It's the kind of thing I literally can't think too much about because it pisses me off too bad, what also sucks is this prevents me from actually just replaying the games we did get, I've not played Half-Life 2 and the Episodes since 2010 and I've not played any Half-Life game since 2013, I feel like I can't run the risk of getting invested all over again before that gutpunch of an ending.

Just seriously, what the fuck is wrong with video games? Why did it have to be this way? I've had my heart broken by every franchise I got the most invested in, namely Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid and Half-Life, my top 3 favorite game franchises and each one of them broke my heart.

Gotta love how all these people promoting "black people/women in gaming" never talk about J'Nique Nicole.

She sang a few songs in Nier Automata's highly acclaimed soundtrack, including City Ruins (Rays of Light), Memories of Dust, and the English version of Weight of the World. That's more involved with gaming than a lot of the people they promote. She even made a song about Black Lives Matter! Why do they not talk about her?

Because they hire useless shills that all the time that they forget that they had actual talented people to promote.

Because she’s not friends with the right people.

I've seen a LOT of people online that will argue tooth and nail that gaming is the best it's ever been, and they all end up being leftist troons or faggots. They'll always mention graphics and stories but never seem to notice the decline in gameplay and the rise in bullshit practices.
A lot of people also don't have a deep history with gaming - certainly not one enough to form a valid opinion like that.

There are people who don't realize (because of age/time) that a lot of games they really enjoyed recently - in the last decade or so - are very derivative of other, older games. For example, Undertale got such a huge reception because so many people never played Earthbound and/or the Mario RPG games - so most people thought it was entirely 100% original. Stardew Valley gets a huge amount of praise from people who never picked up a Harvest Moon/Rune Factory title. Among Us blew up, but most of that crowd hasn't played Werewolf or TTT prior.

It's very clearly not the "best gaming has ever been" - our current gaming environment is full of mediocre ideas being propped up by the new craze of "crossover promotions". Sonic in Minecraft, Sonic in Smash Brothers, Minecraft in Smash Brothers, Robocop in MK11, and so on. I can't really think of a good example of an "innovative game" in the last decade that could be held up as something that would come out of a "golden age" (Minecraft? Portal?). The best we've gotten was MOBA (early 2000s) and Battle Royale (~2015-ish?) and BR is still "100 people in a circle".

Where as if you look at the 1990s, it's really easy. Final Fantasy 7, Half-Life 1 (and Team Fortress and Counter Strike), Metal Gear Solid, Mario 64, Goldeneye, Diablo, Starcraft and so on.

I'm not talking about zoomers when I mention the people who say it's the best ever. I'm talking about oldfags from places like Gamefaqs/Gamespot and other gaming forums. People who should clearly know better but because they're embarassed about playing games they think the fact they've "matured" and only focus on graphics and story they are somehow better.

He was treated as some sort of Demi-God until the earlier parts of the last decade. Now no one cares and Half life is largely irrelevant because of the retarded idea he clearly had that if Half life was finished then everyone would fuck off from steam. That was the elephant in the room Valve never officially talked about but clearly permeated throughout the community back in Half life 2's orange box/Episodic heyday.

I know, he still had that cult following in the early 2010s but as the years dragged on with no new Half-Life people stopped caring.

I just don't understand how the guy could piss away a following like that and a legacy like that.

Like George Lucas and his Star Wars licenses, Gabe Newell is comfortably supported from Steam revenue. He can take a hour nap and make more from Steam sales than we do in a year.

But what about your legacy? You can't take your money with you when you die, but you leave a legacy behind, would you rather be remembered as a beloved figure or a greedy jackass?

For me personally I think about that sort of thing and would care about that.

He's betting his legacy on him kickstarting a lot of the innovations in VR and the batshit insane idea of mind interfaces for computing.
