I personally don’t think this is funny at all. I literally don’t know a single person who qualifies for EBT that doesn’t work full-time. The only people I have ever met who didn’t work were mothers of infants who either had little or no income. The only exception I’ve ever seen was the year when COVID was really bad and they loosened the rules for about 6 months.
I don’t know where you guys live, but it has never been possible to mooch SNAP benefits indefinitely where I live. If you are an adult age 18-49, you have always only been able to receive them temporarily without having to meet employment requirements. Benefits were issued on what was considered to be an emergency basis in that situation, such as sudden homelessness or loss of employment without warning. The time limit varied based on whether or not you had dependents. They have always required people to either be employed, or to be actively seeking employment. Sure, there were people who slipped through the cracks just like there are when it cones to anything with rules, but they got caught more often than not. They ended up either going to prison, being forced to pay back what they took, or both.
And no, I don’t live in a red state.
My mother has been working for the state I live in for 43 years. She is now single for the first time in her entire adult life for reasons beyond her control. She can’t afford groceries without the $120 a month she was receiving because everything is so goddamn expensive. The price of electricity in our state has nearly tripled in the past 5 years because of all the data centers that are being built and the costs are being offset to average customers. They’re not putting that price on the tech companies as an incentive to get them to build here. So now people are choosing whether or not they want to have electricity or food. The average home price here has doubled since 2022. Almost every single household in America with children has 2 working adults and childcare costs more than rent in some places. It’s almost that expensive everywhere else. Life is completely unaffordable for most people and they really needed that extra help.
Good people are struggling. The lack of empathy I’m seeing for the majority just because people want to laugh at a minority that they don’t like is cringe honestly. Especially when people who don’t have to rely on these programs think that they’re going to be exempt from the consequences of this mess. 42 million Americans were using EBT. Do you think the grocery stores are just gonna take the L next month? No. They’re going to inflate prices even more. They’re going to cut employee hours and make it even harder for them to buy groceries. They’re gonna lay people off. They’re not just gonna sit back and watch themselves lose millions of dollars.
I get the memes and jokes. Honestly. I’m not an easily offended snowflake or I wouldn’t be here. But people have GOT to stop constantly taking the divide and conquer bait from the government. It’s an opp and it shouldn’t be working as well as it is. I know for a fact that people are too intelligent for this. Nobody is exempt from the consequences when stuff like this happens. Shit rolls downhill and we are ALL at the bottom of the hill together whether we like it or not. It WILL fuck you one way or another whether you receive EBT or not. The government doesn’t care what color you are or what suburb you live in, which state you’re from or whatever. They’re fucking all of us somehow and while one group is using their head to laugh at the group they hate, the government is at their tail end fucking them in the ass.
Besides, I haven’t even seen any funny content coming out of this situation. Then again, I haven’t been through every page of the thread so maybe I’m wrong.
